absurdism and art

It's a bit strange, when you read about absurdism, you'll notice that in a way it is a heavy and desperate philosophy. It's close related to existentialism and nihilism. And tells you that life has no meaning and any attempt to explain the workings of the universe is doomed to fail. Well that's a bit to depressing for me. But if you want to know a bit more about absurdism as a philosophical movement, you can read about it at wikipedia for instance.
I want to chat a bit about the absurd in the arts. The crazy ideas artists put forward and how they create brilliant art by ignoring what should be right and proper...
I Think absurd and crazy art is fun and gives you a smile. It is a different way of looking at the world and changes your perspective. Absurd art can put a mirror in fornt of your face and say: He buddy, life is strange and wonderfull, enjoy as long as possible. That's why I love Gery Larson, he shows us the crazy world we are living in, and his ideas always gives me hope and a smile.

The absurt in the film

changing the funcion of things

It's always dangerous to put a label on an artist, and most of the time they do not like it. But here we go. I'll want to publish some works from artists who can be associated with the term "the absurd" -
Absurdism can be found in film and comics alike, with film it started in the begining of the 20th centurary with Buster Keaten and the Marx Brothers. Buster Keaten, who did all the stunts himself in his films, gave machines a soul. Trains having a mind of their own, uncontrollable canons... To me Keaten is far better than Chaplin, but that's a personal opinion.
The films of Buster Keaten and the Marx Brothers are called absurd because they don't have any respect for logic or the way the normal world works. Often there jokes don't have a point and thinks are taken out of there natural context.
The famous group "Monty Python" is a classic example of how you can play around with humour. Changing the Context is a strong weapon for the humorists. I suddenly remember the scene where Hitler is sitting at a kitchen table in an English home planning his war with his companions.

Absurdism in Literature

Through the rabbit hole

Alice in WonderlandAn other art form where absurdism took it's course was literature. Absurdist fiction does not give much judgment about characters or their actions. The reader has to decide what's good or wrong. The morality is often dubious and not explicit. The themes and leitmotivs are at best ambiguous, it's quite open in a way. As well with the plot of the story, sometimes there is non and it leaves a lot to fill in for the reader.
Lewis Carroll for example takes you down throw the rabbit hole into a world where proportions change and morality quivers. Alice in Wonderland/Through the looking glass is a good example of absurdism in literature. Dimensions suddenly change. Alice becomes bigger or smaller. The never ending tea time. The laws of physics don't apply in the novels. Later on absurdism became influenced by the Dada movement and the Surrealists as well.

Absurdism and Comics

Comics is the medium to explore the bizarre and absurd. Often it's about changing the function of things or the placing the characters in a different setting. (King Kong on the twin towers is in a way a very comical situation. And it could have been fun if it was made by Terry Gilliam....they missed there chance...)
The Far side for instance changes the perspective, cows on two legs, duck's hanging around in a bar, A dog as a postman. That's why it's so funny. It's self reflecting. By seeing animals behaving like humans, you recognize the stupidity.
As well the best science fiction book ever (well sort of) "The Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy" is so good because it changes the plot constantly and uses a lot of overstatements. A manic depressive robot. A Whale suddenly plopping into space without warning. The big answer 42 to the big Question "What's the meaning of life.etc...."
Speaking of the meaning of Life - a brilliant film from the Monty Python crew as well. They have a different answer though.
A brilliant duo is Kamagurka and Mr. Seele. Two Belgium comic writers/creators who brought Cowboy Henk into life.
Another name to Google is the artist Glenn Baxter who makes absurd paintings. You would thinks that they are small comic drawings if you see them on the web or in books, but they are actually paintings.
I like him a lot because he gives your thoughts a kick in the central nerve system, or whatever.... After seeing one of his pictures I always feel a bit disorientated. Like it should be with great art.
Check out his website : www.glenbaxter.com
Something you could call a comic as well, and quite absurd, are the collages of Max Ernst. called : "Une semaine de bonté" - ("A Week of Kindness") - see my other lens : www.squidoo.com/my-favourite-artist

The gags in the Marx Beothers' movies were absurd because Buster Keaton wrote them as an uncredited gag writer at MGM during his down, lean years.
