These Abu Dhabi Pictures Highlight The Reasons This City Is On My Bucket List

Who wouldn't want to visit the richest city in the world? At least that's how CNN described Abu Dhabi, where the average net worth of it's 420,000 citizens tops $17 million. The capital of United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi is a city hosting the headquarters of many an oil company as well as many embassies. Others consider it to be one of the most modern cities in the world with its many international luxury hotel chains, innovative high-rise buildings, grandiose shopping malls and large gardens and parks lining the streets and roads. With it's ancient influences it is also a city of contrasts.

I'll admit it, Abu Dhabi originally caught my attention because I liked the name. Dubai, it's neighboring emirate has been on my bucket list for a long time, and I always figured I would someday simply fly in and out of Dubai. But as I began researching and looking at Abu Dhabi pictures I discovered some of the amazing things that this city has to offer. I now need even more time in the middle east. You see, Abu Dhabi has earned a spot on my bucket list, which is simply the list of the 10 things I hope to do in my life time.

I hope to someday replace all the Abu Dhabi pictures on this page with my own work. But for now, sit back and enjoy the photos I have found of Abu Dhabi, and see if you don't want to add it to your bucket list by the time you are done with this page.

Keep Abu Dhabi on the bucket list because:

BarbRad says:

Keep it on because you love it.

ibakir says:

What a history there

miaponzo says:

This I would say.. keep it on your list.. I was going to be going this month,.. but my parents cancelled on me :) It's supposed to be pretty nice!

Gloriousconfusion says:

I went there twice in in 1970's - before most of the development, but they had desalination plants and were importing soil and grass from abroad. I went for a swim in the sea and it was really creepy, men started sidling up to stare at me - and I assure you I have never worn a bikini having always been on the chubby side. They didn't come close or do anything untoward, but I think they just weren't accustomed to seeing uncovered women - it was very unnerving. I expect things are different now that it has become a tourist resort.

sandyspider says:

Keep it on the list.

BuckHawk says:

Yep, keep this one on the list.

Take Abu Dhabi off the bucket list because:

Why Is Abu Dhabi on my Bucket List?

So much to see and do in the richest city in the world!

Here are some of the places I would like to visit in Abu Dhabi:
  • Sheikh Zayed Mosque: The third largest mosque in the world, and to the best I can tell the only mosque in UAE which allows non-Muslim visitors (although only at certain times and on certain days)
  • The Corniche: the nearly 6 kilometers path running along the island city's coastline filled with stunning public parks, beautiful fountains, open-air café and the public beach. It is the place to be every evening.
  • Marina Mall: Abu Dhabi is known as a shopping paradise.
  • Traditional souks (markets)
  • Camel Safaris: a tourist activity that is on my bucket list!
  • Ancient archaeological sites (1000s of years old)
  • Ferrari World: the world's largest indoor theme park
  • Sand Skiing: a sport my girls will want to try.
  • The Emirates Palace Hotel: a seven star hotel (which I will never be able to afford, but hey, I can dream).
With all these interesting things to do, another with huge appeal to me: "Sunshine and blue skies can be expected almost every day in Abu Dhabi."

Don't Forget A Tour Book

This is the one I want to take.

I know this covers much more than Abu Dhabi, but for me this city is not a final destination, but rather a bucket list side trip from Dubai. Personally, I am a big fan of the Lonely Planet books, and this one offers nearly 600 pages of the Arabian peninsula.

What's Stopping Me?

abu dhabi picturesFor me, Abu Dhabi would be an extension to a trip to Dubai, rather than a destination on its own. Coming from New Zealand, and being a frequent flyer on Emirates, Dubai would be the port of entry into United Arab Emirates. While the two cities are only about 2 hours apart on the roads, I would still need to schedule an extra two or three days to include the side trip to Abu Dhabi. Other things stopping me are the 20 hour flight, the fact that things are rather expensive in the "richest city in the world" and the two hour trip through the hot dessert (although this could be quite interesting).
