Unabashed Love for A Cappella

Ranked #12,287 in Music, #336,732 overall

Hi! I'm Amy and I'm an a cappella addict. I sing with an a cappella group (Queen Anne's Lace). I'm a music-based life form, and I think that a cappella is one of the purest, most personal forms of musical expression.

This lens is dedicated to all things a cappella, and to sharing my small contributions to the genre with you fabulous folks on the interwebz.

QAL on Cafe Press

Support your local a cappella ensemble

This swag is inspired by D/FW-based ensemble Queen Anne's Lace—lovely ladies, lovely voices, and lots of cleavage! Their stage antics and unique blend have made them a staple at Renaissance festivals and local coffee houses.

QAL Sings "Mr. Fox"

Kathleen & I both fondly remember Houston-based "Nobody's Reel." She brought the words and melody of this song to the group. We added harmonies and changed up the rhythm to make it our own. It's still one of our most popular requests.

These are artists and songs that have inspired me and made me wish for better skills at arranging music cuz I wanna sing 'em all!

Talented groups I like a lot

The variety of a cappella groups, and the wildly varying repertoires are part of the reason I have such a burning love for the genre. Some of these groups are just harmony heavy, but I like them so much that I'm including them here. (Plus, they've inspired and/or informed some of our work with The Lace).
The Lace on MySpace
Here's where I make my small contribution to the a cappella world. You'll get a sense of our sound, and our unique sense of humor that informs our colorful performances.
On The Rocks
One of the QAL alumni found this group, and we all fell instantly in love with their sound, energy, and arrangements. There's also no small amount of envy for the mad beatbox skills (we can't do it because lipstick-clad lips make it hard to get the right amount of tension...). We give this group a hardy 16 thumbs up!
The Puppini Sisters
These ladies are amazing, and their live show is no less so. QAL has a Swing CD out, and we love how they have taken modern songs and put them in a swing setting. The cover of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights? Inspired greatness. And Beyonce's Crazy in Love is wondrous lunacy. Their tight harmonies make them a great fit for an a cappella addict, even if they do have a jazz trio backing them up.

Da Vinci's Notebook
Da Vinci's Notebook Da Vinci's Notebook, Washington, D.C.'s award-winning a cappella quartet, takes four part harmony and stands it on its ear. Described as "Bobby McFerrin and 'Weird Al' Yankovic colliding on stage..."
Schrodinger's Cat
Mix Bobby McFerrin and "Stomp!", add healthy dose of Texas (brewed with an attitude), and you get Schrodinger's Cat, literally kicking new directions in music. Their unique style, called "Big Beat A Cappella", expands the standard vocal band's tight harmonies. Austin-based group... fabulous!
