Unitus is an innovative non-profit focused on accelerating the end of extreme poverty through providing access to microfinance services. The facts are that microfinance works as a tool in breaking multi-generational poverty AND the microfinance industry is severely underperforming so that 100's of millions of people who could immediately benefit from microfinance don't have access to these services and won't for many decades at the current progress.
Microfinance is the business of providing financial services to the greatly underserved population ... the poor. Usually microfinance starts with providing small loans (often $50-100) to microentrepreneurs to start or expand a very small business. The borrowers pay back the loan (with interest) and then invest their additional profits into their family, to further expand a business or save for a rainy day.
Unitus functions like a venture capitalist/merchant banker. Unitus finds the best early-stage microfinance institutions (MFI's -- essentially banks) which have huge potential for growth. Unitus invests significant capital AND provides expert management consulting to empower and equip these MFIs for dramatic growth.
The result is that MFIs serving a few thousand clients today can be expected to be serving 100's of thousands of clients in just a few years.
