Home Modifications for Independent Living
Elder Proofing Your Home
One out of every two people over the age of 60 in the United States has some type of disability limiting their daily living. For these people, making the home safer and easier to use ensures that they will be able to stay in their own home for a long time. Most accidents happen in the bathroom so this is usually the first place to begin. Adding grab bars in or near the shower and tub or close to the toilet makes a huge impact for preventing falls.
Raising the toilet up a few inches (from the bottom) decreases the chances of a fall and reduces the strain on arthritic joints.
Widening doorways to allow enough room for wheelchairs, walkers and scooters to get through without scraping fingers or paint.
Creating permanent ramps outside the home provides a means for using a wheelchair or scooter to easily go in and out of the home.
Shelves that slide in and out of cabinets reduce strain. To get really fancy, adding cabinets and sinks that raise and lower at the touch of a button takes this to a whole new level.
Stairlifts, and even home elevators, make it possible to go up and down stairs in a safe and easy manner.
Popular Home Safety Modifications
Links to some of our Home Modifications
- Bruno Curved Stair Lift in Los Angeles With 9-Custom Turns
- This Bruno Curved Stair Lift in Los Angeles was for a client with 7 levels in their home. The stairlift had 9 custom turns that went from the downstairs floor all the way up to the top floor bedroom.
- Bruno Independent Living Outdoor Stair Lift 76 Feet Long
- The Challenge for this project was a 90-foot long driveway that was narrow and steep with no way to turn the car around. The Solution was to install a 76-foot Bruno Outdoor Stair Lift that traveled length of the driveway from the street to the front door of the home.
- Shower Dam
- Wheelchair showers with a roll-in threshold are a great convenience but it's important to use a collapsible water retainer shower dam for the threshold to keep water in the shower and off the bathroom floor.
- Fold Down Grab Bar
- Fold Down Grab Bars work great near toilets because they swivel up and out of the way when not needed and can be mounted behind the toilet if a side wall is too far away.
- Los Angeles Stairlifts
- Custom stairlift installation in the Los Angeles and southern California area.
- Toilevator Raised Toilet Spacer
- A Toilevator raises the toilet 3.5 inches from the bottom. This is safer and more hygienic than strapping a toilet lifter on top of the toilet seat.
- Offset Door Hinges Widen Doorways
- Instead of tearing out a doorway to make it wider, Offset Door Hinges swing away and are expandable adding 2 inches to the width of the doorway.
Products That Promote Safety and Mobility
Simple to Complex Disability Items
In addition to modifying homes, Accessible Design sells products that promote independent living. Some of these can be installed by the homeowner while other items can be used anywhere.Wheelchairs, scooters and walkers are popular but it's important to get the best one for your needs. A Parkinson Laser Walker is specialized and unnecessary for most people but for some, it is the ideal solution.
Furniture Risers are simple to install and inexpensive, yet provide a few inches of lift to chairs, sofas, desks and beds.
Car Aids like a Handybar or Car Caddie make getting in and out of the car easier and safer.
With so many products like these available it helps to have a single place to go for all your needs.

- Furniture Risers (sofa risers, bed risers)
- Furniture Risers lift chairs, sofas, or beds a few inches for ease of sitting or standing.
- Handybar
- A simple lever that aids in getting in and out of the car.
- Parkinson Walker - Laser Walker
- Probably the most stable walker on the market, this specialized device has a laser that helps Parkinson patients "un-freeze" when walking.
- Transport Chair
- Very lightweight and compact, a Transport Chair folds down and can be carried in the trunk of a car. It's much more convenient for a caregiver than struggling with a standard wheelchair for running errands, or going to the doctor, pharmacy or grocery store.
- Patient Lift
- A portable, lightweight, electric Patient Lift can be easily used by one caregiver for most common patient lifting situations. It is excellent for transferring from the bed or bathroom to a wheelchair.
