Accessible Building-Facility Design

There is a broad, diverse community of individuals that use a building.

Deaf, blind. Young, old. Tall, short. English-speaking, Spanish-speaking. Wheelchair assisted, lead-dog assisted. Employee, visitor.

All independent individuals use various forms of accessibility to access and use the building. From the methods they use to arrive at the building, enter the building, work and play in the building to their final exit of the building.

VSA Arts Disability Awareness Guide
The VSA arts' Disability Awareness Guide was prepared by VSA arts as an informational tool for those who want to gain additional knowledge about disability and tips for social etiquette and positive interactions. When the first edition of the guide was printed in 1992, it instantly became VSA arts' most frequently requested publication. Artists, educators and others found it to be a valuable resource in beginning their understanding of people with disabilities.

The guide should be viewed as a starting point for readers to increase their basic knowledge, initiate discussion, and clarify myths and facts about people with disabilities. It is a tool that will start readers on their way to a better understanding of disability issues and the disability community as a whole.

Cool Learning Tools

Kurzweil Educational Systems
As an alternative learning instructor, my wife has been amazed at what this system can do for individuals in their learning lab.

Kurzweil Educational Systems' research-aligned technologies provide complete reading, writing, and study solutions to help all students overcome learning challenges and succeed academically.

Kurzweil 3000 is a scaffolded reading, writing, and study skills solution for struggling learners, including ELL students and students with special needs. It enables educators to provide differentiated instruction without having to differentiate the curriculum. Our Case Studies illustrate student, teacher, and school successes.

Kurzweil 1000 provides blind users access to printed and electronic materials. Scanned print documents and digital files (such as eBooks or email) are converted from text to speech and read aloud.
