Nursing So Much More These Days

The healthcare field is one area that is projected to grow by leaps and bounds over the next two decades. New healthcare legislation and the growing number of older people, make this field even more vital than it was before. Thousands of new nurses will be needed to help staff the many doctor's offices, hospitals and clinics that will be serving an aging and growing populace.

There are several kinds of jobs that nurses can do. A nurse student can have the ability to choose what type of nursing she wants to go into. The online education level a nurse chooses will determine what type of work they do, from caring for patients, to high-level administrative work.

Where Will You Fit In?

In a one year program, a student can achieve the certification of a Licensed Practical Nurse. An LPN will work directly with patients, administering care such as blood pressure and temperature readings, or monitoring other statuses that help determine a patient's condition. An LPN works under the direct supervision of RNs and doctors, completing the basic tasks of nursing duties.

At the two-year accredited degree level, a nurse can be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN). Registered nurses are licensed by the state in which they practice after they pass a state exam. Registered nurses have a great deal more responsibility for a patient's care than a nurse at the LPN level. It is common for Registered Nurses to work with doctors on staff to help arrange the care a patient will receive.

Continuing Education Offers Wider Career Field

Those students who hold a bachelors in nursing are also Registered Nurses, but they have a great deal more training than someone with an associate degree. With bachelors degrees they are eligible to work administrative duties that those with two-year degrees haven't trained for. In addition, with bachelors degree they command higher salaries than students with associates degrees.

Many nurses choose to continue their educational pursuits with online nursing schools. One of the most popular nursing masters degrees is in hospital management. Others choose to teach, or to receive masters degrees in nursing administration.
