About ACEO / ATC art cards

What are ACEOs?

About ACEO art cards:

ACEO stands for Art Cards Editions and Originals, they are collectable miniature works of art created in any medium always measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches, They can be collected in an album, framed or traded, much like baseball cards.

Originally called ATCs Artist Trading cards, they were traded amongst the art community to show examples of work but not sold, ACEOs were born on eBay, the difference being they are for sale to the public which provides a great opportunity to collect original artwork and limited edition prints at an affordable price by many talented artists out there, not only fun to collect they could also be a good investment.

simple description of aceos here.

Creating ACEO art cards

Points about making ACEOs

The guidelines for creating ACEO miniature artworks are:

-The cards must measure 2.5 x 3.5 inches.
You can cut them to size yourself of buy pre-cut ones. The easiest way to find cut art cards is to do a search for 'aceo supplies' (there you should also find the protective plastic trading card sleeves or toploaders that are ideal to keep the art card in.)

-Use archival materials
This means using acid free card, art quality papers/supports to prevent yellowing and damage to the art. Personally I use 450gsm watercolour paper for my pencil, watercolour and acrylic works (the heavy weight to feel like stiff card) and gesso primed canvas textured art paper for oils. You can also use mat board or any other archival surface to work on, whatever suits you best. Any glues or stickers you use, say for altered art should also be acid free.

-Any medium goes!
here are some examples.

-Traditional mediums- Graphite (pencils), watercolours, pastels, oils, acrylics, coloured pencils, charcoal, mixed media.

-Altered art- Like a collage of images either glued on or altered digitally.

-Pyrography (wood burning)

-Digital art- artwork created digitally and printed out using archival paper & inks. There are some amazing digital works and hopefully this medium will grow to be better understood and sell better in the future.

However you choose to create your art card, whether it's for fun, to trade as an ATC (artist trading card), sell or plan out a larger painting, have fun and experiment with these wonderfully collectable miniature works of art!

Selling & buying ACEOs & Art

Things to be aware of.

This guide is for artists who would like to sell their work online. It is based on gathering the information I needed and found useful when starting to sell online.

-Producing a COA (certificate Of Authenticity) and why it is important.
-Copyright issues and different copyright licences.
-Protecting your images.
-Prints & Editions
-Where to sell and why ACEOs are not only beautiful miniature collectable pieces but are an effective marketing tool.

I have included links to websites where you can sell, make prints and open a free shop to turn your art into gifts such as t-shirts and mugs, also there are many groups for ACEO enthusiasts too.

Certificates Of Authenticity

Examples of what to include

WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY SHOULD I WRITE ONE?

Certificates of Authenticity (COA) can accompany all artwork you sell, Originals, prints and ACEOs, they protect you and the buyer ,not only providing essential information about the piece, they also prove that it is original. Prints should have one too stating whether it is a limited edition or an open print edition, (this will be covered in greater detail in the 'prints' section). It is not uncommon for someone to copy and sell your image as a print without your knowledge therefore making it next to impossible for you to make any decent sales in the future when cheap copies are in the market.(more detail on protecting your image) This is why it is very important to always include a COA and ensure you will get one when you buy art. The potential customer will feel secure to buy from you and it adds professionalism. However this is up to you, any reciept/note you include with the art is fine.

OKAY, I WANT TO CREATE ONE OR CHECK I HAVEN'T MISSED ANYTHING ON MINE, WHAT SHOULD IT INCLUDE?

-TITLE: The title of your artwork
-ARTIST: Your name
-DATE/RELEASE: The date of completion
-MEDIUM: The materials used to create the artwork eg- watercolours on 425gsm heavy acid free watercolour paper or oils on deep edge box canvas
-DIMENSIONS: The size of the artwork 10" x 12" or 14 x 16 4cm deep etcetera
-COPYRIGHT STATEMENT
Your Copyright notice eg: Copyright ~ J Dunnett ~ 2007 all rights reserved
Or you may choose to have some rights reserved /public licence, which shouldn't be considered unless you want to grant permission to copy, there are more details on this in the copyright section.

Prints should state the Edition, whether it is an open edition or limited and include the number, eg 1/10.

EXAMPLE CERTIFICATES OF AUTHENTICITY

COPYRIGHT ©

Some points about copyright.

Copyright Information ©
Your copyright statement should be a simple and straight to the point notice expressing your wishes regarding your artwork and clearly state it belongs to you and what uses you wish to allow or not. It will deter others who - knowingly or not- think it is okay to copy your work. Keep it simple though, as you've probably noticed some sites that have copyright plastered everywhere and it look awful, one notice per page covers it.
What should I put in my copyright statement?

© ALL RIGHTS RESERVED - Recommended. The most common statement which simply states that you forbid copying and withhold all rights to use of the image.

© All images and content copyright ~Jennifer Dunnett 2007~ all rights reserved
SOME RIGHTS RESERVED, extending your copyright notice. Maybe you decide that you wish to grant use of your image with some restrictions, for example for members within your favourite forum to display and use ect or permit free distribution of your image giving credit to you where it is used. Carefully word this stating your conditions clearly, concisely and to the point.
EG
'© Copyright J Dunnett 2007. This image may be used by members of 'Example Group' as reference for your own original work which may be sold, this original image may NOT be sold or distributed without my prior express written consent.'

'© Copyright J Dunnett 2007, You are free to copy, use, distribute and display this image without my consent for private use on the condition I am given full credit. It must not be sold or used for any commercial purposes without prior written consent.'

Be very careful stating your exact conditions when not using all rights reserved.
For more information on copyright please take a look here http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/common/copyright#licence

IF YOUR WORK IS BEING COPIED

If someone has copied you work this is an example of a 'Cease and desist' letter you should send
http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/contract/cease.htm

IMAGE PROTECTION

Deterring image theft

If you do not want your work copied do not display it without caution, but as an artist it is essential to show examples and art work for sale. It is important to protect your art so I have listed some tips and links to software/code that can help.
People may right click and save the picture, if you have protected it they may be not be deterred and take a screen capture anyway to get the image.

Emails may be randomly sent to you saying that your work is so good you are invited to join a gallery but first must send a digital proof of a work to them for entry, this is a common way for your image to be stolen and sold as prints, so be very cautious where you send pictures!

There are different ways to protect yourself from image theft and deter potential unauthorised use of your images.

-Try to display only small pictures, close up of sections only to show details if required.
- Paste a copyright notice or simply a line to render the image useless for copying.
-Display your copyright statement on each page as a reminder that it is not okay to use your image.
-Mention on your site that your artwork and prints always come with a COA anyone if buying from a previous customer, encourage them to request a digital proof of the COA and contact you check the reference number.

ON YOUR WEBSITE

-DISABLE RIGHT CLICKING- there is a handy bit of code for this
body oncontextmenu="return false;"

More information on using this code can be found here -

http://javascript.about.com/library/blnoright.htm

Although when people want to genuinely use right click on the page it may be annoying, it will only deter casual browsers from lifting your image as it is easy to get round by simply staking a screen shot.
-TRANSPARENT.GIF OVER YOUR IMAGE- This option is more discreet, it involves putting your image in the background with a transparent image on top, when someone saves they will think they have the image but only get the transparent layer =P and hopefully will may not bother returning to try again. You can find the code generated for you below at about.com

http://javascript.about.com/library/blimgprot.htm

-CUTTING THE IMAGE INTO PIECES- this is another deterrant, simply use editing software such as Photoshop and cut it to bits, select an area > copy > new from clipboard and save, you then put the bits back together on the web page. Rarely people will save all the bits and do the jig saw to recreate it. Or make it even more annoying by putting a

transparent .gif over it as a backgroung image, but still there is no way to prevent a screen capture.

PRINTS & EDITIONS

Some info about prints and editions.

"Open Edition - Prints/reproductions of artwork that is printed in the standard card size. Open editions can be printed and reprinted depending on the demand for the card. There is no limit to how many will be printed. This can also be a mini-print of a larger original artwork.

Limited Edition - This type is also a print/reproduction, but there is a limit to how many cards will be ever printed/sold. These cards are more valuable then open edition cards, because there is only a limited amount of each card that is available in the world. Many times, limited edition cards will be numbered on the back of the card.

Original Artwork - This card is a unique piece of artwork done by the artist. It can be painted or drawn, but it will be 100% original and only one card exists in the world. This type of card is the most valuable."

This is a complete ripoff, I was able to screenshot their "protected" pages with just TWO keystrokes. Don't pay for something that isn't going to block the keystrokes - which BTW, nothing can block.

And nothing can block programs like Camtasia or Captivate from just recording the screen and then importing it into photoshop.

Just pointless to buy 40 bucks for something that doesn't work,.

ATTENTION ACEO COLLECTORS & SELLERS

Please leave your answer here, it would be helpful for sellers and buyers!

Collectors

- Where do you shop for ACEOs?

- Would you buy directly from an artists website? what would put you off/reassure you? (For example payment methods, site layout, information about the art, contacting the artist to ensure they'll get the order etc..)

- When coming accross an ACEO artist you like do you do a search to find out more about them?

Please add anything else you wish!

Artists

- Where do you sell?

- Any particular site you have the most success?

- Do you also collect?
