The True Story About a Boy That Survives One of the Worst Child Abuse Cases in California's History

All my emotions were stirred while reading this book, I absolutely could not put it down! Dave Pelzer - aka: "It" accounts his life and how he suffered unbelievable abuse by those that should have loved him the most. How he survives and rises above is a shining testament to the resilience of the human spirit!

One Child's Courage to Survive

Dave won...with an incredible will to not only survive, but to rise above it all!

Dave Pelzer was born in 1960 and grew up in a middle-class suburb of San Francisco. His dad was a firefighter whose work kept him away for days at a time. His mother was a homemaker and an alcoholic who started abusing Dave when he was four years old.

While his mother cared for the rest of the family, Dave was starved, beaten, burned, and referred to as "the boy" and eventually, "it." His mother made him eat his brother's feces, drink ammonia, and would hold his arm over a gas stove. Dave internalized his mother's hatred and believed he was unworthy of love.

No one stopped his mother. In the Pelzer household, dad worked, and mom raised the boys. Dave says his father was the perfect passive observer. For Dave, survival became a matter of out-witting his mother.

When I Read A Child Called "It"...
- I allowed myself to cry...and cry I did through many of the chapters.

- When something "called me to action" I would jot down my thoughts in a notebook. Here are a few...
* Where do children go in my state when they are taken from an abusive home?
* How can I tell other's about this book?
* Pass this book onto [friend's name] and ask them to pass it on when they are done reading it.
* Is there a way for me to contact Dave Pelzer about his book?

- Not long after reading this book I became an online counselor with TeenCentral.net. It was one of the most rewarding AND heartbreaking experiences of my life.

In 1994...

Dave Pelzer was awarded The Outstanding Young Person of the World for Personal Improvement and Accomplishment.

We can all claim we know how we would react in certain situtations but I think it is totally different experience to actual be in the moment. I guess my answer is I don't know.

its not riight for his mother tew be dewin diss tew him

cameron says:

i think itz a good thing that he survived...when i got through reading ALL his books,i was like astonished how awfully he was trated and i couldnt imagine how how hard it was to just be a child.im just 11 years old and im treated really good.i hope his mom suffered

joycecity says:

Unbelievable story! thanks for sharing!

canoz says:

Regardless of the 'truth' of such stories (or not) I believe that the value of them is a raising of awareness in society that these atrocities can and do happen. Also it is never OK. We can learn to be more conscious of the experiences around us should the need arise to offer our support. Perhaps there are those who can take courage knowing that they are not alone in the world and are deserving of a better life. As a society we have hopefully moved beyond the ethos of turning a blind eye.

Don't even try messin' with me!

bikerministry says:

I'm not sure the general public does know how to get involved or how to respond. So sad. Great lens. I read this book when it first came out. Blessings.

YayasHome says:

I'd like to respond to those who doubt this story, if I may. I b'lieve every single thing that has been written by Dave Pelzer 'bout himself is true. I've read every one of his books.

That said, it doesn't matter whether his story is true or not because I know for a fact that there are children who have suffered that... an' worse... at the hands of those who should have been protecting them. My personal hope is that any person who does deliberate harm to a child... or, to anyone... will suffer at least as much as they have issued. What goes around, comes around an' I often take comfort in knowing that.

I also pray that you never have reason to realize the depth of such serious child abuse. If you knew how bad it was, your heartache would surely be as overwhelming as mine is.

Samah says:

People out there do not do what Davids mother did it hurts and its torture. While i was reading the interesting yet sad story i was thinking of the parents in the world who actually do this to there children. These people these days thanks to god are in jail feeling the hurt and scars they have left on their children. Please help to stop child abuse!

ariell says:

why in the world would his mom treat him like this wtf is wrong widd her

A Gripping Excerpt!

I Hate These Games - Book Excerpt

Why would someone do these horrible things to another?

Leftovers

"By the sixth day I was so weak when I woke up on my army cot, I could hardly get up. I worked on my chores at a snail's pace. I felt so numb. My thought responses became unclear. It seemed to take minutes for me to understand each sentence Mother yelled to me. As I slowly strained my head up to look at Mother, I could tell that to her it was a game -- a game which she thoroughly enjoyed.

"Oh, poor little baby," Mother sarcastically cooed. Then she asked me how I felt, and laughed when I begged for food. At the end of the sixth day, and those that followed, I hoped with all my heart that Mother would feed me something, anything. I was at a point that I didn't care what it was.

One evening, towards the end of her "game," after I had finished my chores, Mother slammed a plate of food in front of me. The cold leftovers were a feast to my eyes. But I was wary; it seemed too good to be true. "Two minutes!" Mother barked. "You have two minutes to eat. That's all." Like lightening I picked up the fork, but the moment before the food touched my mouth, Mother snatched the plate away from me and emptied the food down the garbage disposal. "Too late!" she sneered. I stood before her dumbstruck. I didn't know what to do or say. All I could think of was "Why?" I couldn't understand why she treated me the way she did. I was so close that I could smell every morsel. I knew she wanted me to cave in, but I stood fast and held back the tears. Mother had another favorite game for me while Father was away. She sent me to clean....."

More About Dave Pelzer

A Wikipedia.org article

Dave PelzerDavid James (Dave) Pelzer (born December 29, 1960 in Daly City, California) is an American author, best known for his 1995 memoir of childhood abuse, A Child Called ItA Child Called It by Dave Pelzer.

Pelzer was born in San Francisco, California, and was the second of five boys. Pelzer wrote in his book that as a child he was continually abused, mistreated, and beaten by his mother, who thought of it as a game. The book documents how his mother starved him, forced him to drink ammonia, stabbed him in the stomach, burned his arm on a gas stove and forced him to eat his own vomit. His teachers stepped in on March 5, 1973 and 12-year-old Pelzer was placed in foster care. In 1979, he joined the Air Force and later became an author. Catherine Pelzer's fourth child, Richard B. Pelzer, has also written about having been abused.

Child abuse takes many forms and it is all too prevalent in our society. It is a silent disease causing unnecessary decay. Children experiencing damage from abuse, without appropriate healing, will rarely reach their true and intended potential in life.
Bringing awareness to this situation is a beginning step in stopping the heartache. That is the purpose of the book I wrote.

Every time I hear of a child being abused, it makes me so angry! Dave Pelzer is only one of many children who deserve to be loved, nurtured an' protected. There are so many people in this world, myself included, who struggle / struggled to have children. To think that every single child could have the love that they deserve, if only those who abuse children were relieved of the children they obviously DO NOT appreciate or love.

I have absolutely no respect for anyone who would hurt someone else. I cannot imagine how those abusers will feel when they eventually hafta' explain themselves to our loving Heavenly Father. But I do think I am looking forward to it. :)

I have read all of the titles by David Pelzer and can honestly say they moved me to tears, several times. How anyone can treat a person like this is beyond me and one who should be loved unconditionally. I'm so pleased he has managed to turn his life in to something positive for him and for those around him it shows how strong we really are. Beautiful and moving lens.

It's truly sad to know that there are so many children that have to endure this type of abuse. Makes me want to find that mother and slap her silly...no matter where she is right now.

This is an amazing lens. I was abused as a child and just made a lens about forgiveness, but it was no where near to being this severe. I really have to read the book. Thank you for building this lens.
