I sure could use the morale support of my readers as I tackle the next phase of my foot care ... hopefully I won't need surgery to repair the Achilles tendon! But, I'll probably be having surgery for another excision of a Morton's Neuroma!

- Few years ago I started to eat Oatmeal for breakfast for almost a year. I have used to walk often as an exercise, and one day I noticed it was hard me for to walk then i noticed little swelling behind my heel on both foot. So for the first time i discovered that I have injured my Achilles tendon. Soon I couldn't wear a shoe and started using clogs or slippers. But i started to think what caused it, and I discovered it could be the oatmeal because of the gluten i thought to stop eating oatmeal and i did . My both feet recovered but it took long time and they are well again. I would like to let my friends to avoid gluten which does cause many trouble for some people. i wish you well. Anna

- Wow! I injured my achilles tendon about a year and half ago during water aerobics. I went to physio for a year and still no real improvement so I stopped going. I still have a bit of a bulge in the tendon and if I'm on my feet for too long the pain begins to flare up. The things that seem to keep it in tune are ice and stretching. It is annoying and has definitely put many limits on my activities which I find incredibly frustrating.

- I am so glad you linked this to my blog post, it was really interesting. My doctor didn't give me half of this information, just strapped me up and sent me on my way - to get heels (which I am not supposed to wear due to a prior back injury.) Oh, well. Hope you are fully recovered by now, and thanks for commenting on my blog :)

- I hope you've fully recovered by now! I haven't had an Achilles tendon torn or ruptured, but I do know an athletic friend who did once have his snap when playing badminton. Boy, he had to go through surgery and the whole process, start to finish was not pretty. We shared a home at that point so I went through the whole process with him. That's when I really learned about the Achilles tendon. He seems to be doing way better, but it is not the same. Great job (as always) on this lens!

- There are a bunch of us comparing notes, and reading randomized studies, at achillesblog.com . My own blog's at achillesblog.com/normofthenorth . I'm recovering from my SECOND Achilles rupture, 8 years apart, both during competitive volleyball.
In late 2001, everybody knew that surgery was the way to go for athletes who wanted good results, so I got the surgery. Recovery took "forever", but I was back playing competitive volleyball around 10 months later, with no loss of speed or power or vertical, AFAICS.
This time (Dec. 2009), I got referred to one of Toronto's most prestigious sports-med ortho surgeons, expecting to be scheduled for the same surgery. Instead, Dr. Zarnett told me that he had stopped doing ATR-repair surgery 4 months earlier, based on a new study from U. W. Ontario that showed there was no benefit from surgery -- not in strength, not in Range of Motion, and not in re-rupture rate! And of course, there are LOTS of DISbenefits from surgery, so (after discussing the results with the study's authors), he stopped doing the operation.
Under his care, I was clamped into a boot and I followed the UWO study's protocol -- which is WAY quicker than the one I followed 8 years ago, post-op. No casts at all, and out of the boot after 8 weeks. Physio starts (gently) at TWO weeks!
I think this is the way to go. The UWO study is actually the FOURTH randomized study of surgery vs. non-surgery using the same relatively quick and aggressive protocol for all patients, and they've ALL shown statistically equivalent results -- OK, except for ONE strength measurement in ONE of the studies, but it showed that the patients who skipped the surgery were STRONGER(!).
There are two surgeons in Japan who've published preliminary results from a new ultra-strong suture they're doing, and their recovery rates are blisteringly fast. But unless you can get the operation from them, I don't see any reason to get cut. 10 years ago maybe, but not now, knowing what we know now. Of course, "the old wisdom" will survive and be repeated until all the old surgeons and PTs and coaches retire and die, but people who can read scientific studies can tell that it's Just Not True!

- I too heard a loud pop then I felt as if a bat hit my left ankle. Since no one was near me and I wasn't moving at the time I thought someone clubbed me. That was 2.5 months ago. I get rid of the boot this Friday. I did have the surgery and thought that it would be a quicker recovery for an active person as I am. I am lost alot of muscle and did in the first week. I don't think I could trust my ankle without a repair. Not sure I'll trust it with one. Sure wish I knew why it happened.

- I ruptured my right Achilles tendon 6 months ago and it's a very slow, tedious recovery process. I was on crutches for almost 2 months and in a walking boot/aircast for another 1.5 months after that, all a very humbling experience for someone used to being very active, mobile and independent (I couldn't even drive myself to my doctor appointments). This was followed by 3 months of physical therapy (I'm still recovering). My surgeon said you never recover 100%%u202690-95% is about as good as it gets and there is a 5% risk of a re-rupture to always be mindful of as well; it's rare but it can happen.

- I'm very surprised by the many people here who had no surgery and/or no physical therapy. Being an active, sport-playing person I've been told by my orthopedic surgeon, my ER doc friend and numerous websites that surgery (for an otherwise healthy and athletic person) is the way to go. Less chance of re-rupture, more push-off strength and similar healing time (if not faster).
With regards to physical therapy, you need to do physical therapy (whether formally in the office of a PT and/or at home) to regain strength and range of motion. I am 1.5 weeks post-surgery and had my leg in a hard-cast for 8 days and was moved to a CAM boot. In those 8 days (and the additional 6 days between the injury and the surgery) I had noticeable muscle loss in both my calf and my quad.
Physical therapy is a must unless if you intend any athletics and even to regain a normal gait/walk.

- I felt pain in my back ankle area back in April. I went to one dr. who had me get an mri - showed I have a tear in my Archilles Tendon. He wanted to do surgery - I got a 2nd opinion who said to me, why would he do surgery but said to try physical therapy. I have done that - it feels better but I do still have pain. I was told to do my exercises daily to keep the area and calf from tightening up.........don't want surgery for many reasons - has anyone chosen the no surgery route and had it turn out ok? By the way, that first dr. scared me by saying a torn tendon was like a fraying rope and that I was a walking time-bomb...........the 2nd dr. did not say that, but said that he thought that sometimes the mri's are "over-read" and that I might have had this tear for years and just now irritated it. The area is rather thick (compared to the other foot) and painful if I push on it.

- I tore my achilles and I didn't have surgery being diabetic they said it was very risky, I had a cast and then a walking boot and my final appt with ortho surgeon I walked in with my tennis shoes carrying the boot and am walking a mile a day on my treadmill and so far so good.. I do get some pain, occasion swelling but I think that would be with any injury surgery or non surgical treatment methods

- Tore my achillies 6 years ago playing rugby, didn't have surgery because I am a little coward, but I was in plaster for about 10 weeks, leg is fine except for swelling, throughout the day my leg swells but at night when I go to bed the swelling goes away, I have spoke to other rugby players who have had the same injury and some of them also have the same type of swelling, I have know idea why this happens.

- Just got diagnosed with Achilles tendonosis five days ago and am now in a Royce air boot myself, for what will probably be 3 months, since the doctor also found some degenerative tendinopathy there. It kind of bums me out since summer is just beginning and I am always active this time of year, but I am coming to a slow acceptance of facing the entire summer in this air cast. It's not so bad once you get used to it, but still, I am feeling rather depressed at being laid up all summer long (and I am still recovering from recent hand surgery a few weeks ago and don't yet have full use of my left hand back yet, making this even tougher to swallow!). Why could this not have happened in the dead of winter instead of late May? I'd appreciate hearing from others who have gone through this experience so I don't feel so alone.

- I went to go to work one day in 1994, jumped down the last 3 steps outside the front door, and the next thing I was on the ground and my foot felt oddly numb. Yes I completely ruptured my achilles. Ended up with my lef in a cast for 3 months, but it healed completely thankfully. Worst thing was getting a cramp in my calf, the sort you usually get rid of by stretching your foot. Well I couldn't do that! It was agony, and my calf was rippling like there was an alian in there.
