Acid Reflux And Diet

How does your diet effect your acid reflux?

There are some people who have acid reflux disease because of a defect in a small valve at the top of their stomach, which is supposed to close after you swallow in order to keep food and stomach acids in the stomach.

The reason for this is because some foods are much more difficult for the body to break down and digest and this causes the stomach to churn out more acid when presented with these foods, and because some foods have a high acid content themselves.

The connection between acid reflux disease and diet high in foods that are acidic themselves is that their acid, coupled with the acid in your stomach, is of course going to be just too much acid in your system at one time.

While many people hate to hear they should cut back on their beloved steaks and hamburgers, by at least cutting back some on the number of times you eat red meat you should have fewer flare-ups of acid reflux disease, and diets lower in red meat and typically healthier anyway. One connection between acid reflux disease and diet that many people forget is the amount of food that you eat, not just what type.

When considering acid reflux disease and diet, you absolutely must be aware of your portion and meal sizes at any one time. For some, there may not actually be a connection between acid reflux disease and diet.

Infant Reflux

Most people consider acid reflux as an adults only disease but its also a problem for babies and is known as infant reflux. Below is some info about infant reflux as well as a few things you can do to ease or help the problem.

As in the case of adults, its all about digesting the food. If baby doesn't digest it properly, stomach acid may rise up into the esophagus and cause discomfort. If you think your baby may be a sufferer you will want to see their health worker or doctor. There are several medications that they can prescribe but you can also do several things yourself to ease some of the symptoms for baby.

Be sure to position your baby in a way that will allow him to breast feed or eat from a bottle without having to lie down. This can alter the digestion process, and cause your baby to choke or spit up. You should also make sure that you are not feeding your baby too much at one time, since this could cause infant reflux to flare up as well. This makes it harder for your little one to digest the formula or breast milk, and could cause him to have trouble sleeping.

After you have fed your baby, don't put her to bed right away. Also, don't rock baby right after feeding; this makes it easier for the stomach acid to end up in the esophagus. If you put your infant to sleep right away, there is not time for the nutrients in the breast milk or formula to turn into energy into the baby's system, and this could make for a very irritable little one, especially during the wee hours of the morning. Babies tend to fall asleep while they are feeding, so if you notice that your little one is dozing off, gently wake him so that you can finish feeding. Be sure to burp your infant after feeding as well, in order to get rid of any air pockets in the stomach that could cause discomfort later.

Babies usually grow out of infant reflux at around 12 months old but its great idea to still pay attention to what they are eating. As they grow, making sure they enjoy fruit and vegetables will give them a good start in life as will trying to limit the amount of fried foods they eat. If they are eating healthy as youngsters they will be much less likely to avoid problems later in life such as obesity and adult acid reflux.

Acid Reflux Disease Control

If you have the acid reflux disease then you need to be prepared to make some changes to both your lifestyle and your diet if you are to take control of your symptoms and get back to feeling better on a permanent basis. At the moment you may only feel nothing more than an annoying discomfort during a reflux attack but left unchecked acid reflux disease long term can be very harmful so you need to take control now. I've put together a few steps you can take below.

In order to get rid of the lingering symptoms that can sometimes be a part of reflux, such as stomach pain, slight headaches or hoarseness, you will want to make sure that you reduce your stress level as much as possible. You can do this may making sure that you enjoy yourself with friends and family by taking time out from work a few times a week. You should also make sure that you are getting your exercise in every week; walking, riding a bike and jogging are all great ways to make sure that your acid reflux disease doesn't flare up too often and taking up activities like yoga and meditation are good ways to relax your mind and body as well.

If you are dining out try and wear loose shirts and a belt you can discretely slacken at the appropriate time as tight clothes can increase the discomfort you get from acid reflux disease. A strong heart is important to all of us but as a suffer of aid reflux its even more important and you need to get your hearts strength back. If you like a drink you should cut down as alcohol is a known cause of acid reflux and if you smoke you are going to have to quit as smoking aids the erosion of the esophagus that the acid reflux disease is also eroding.

A change in eating habits will be needed to get acid reflux disease under control. Try not to turn in for the night until your last meal has had at least three hours to digest and if you can, try to sleep with your torso somewhat raised. Try cutting out large main meals and eating 4 or 5 snacks per day instead. The quicker you can get the food digested the less chance of an acid reflux disease attack so eating smaller meals will help enormously.

On the other side of the coin you should avoid heavy foods such as Italian pasta dishes and anything cooked in heavy oils such as fries, fried eggs etc. Once you have eaten try to keep active for half an hour by taking a walk or even just doing the dishes and never lie down straight after a meal.

The Causes Of Acid Reflux

If you are getting heartburn type symptoms or other discomforts after eating certain types of meals you may be suffering an attack of acid reflux. Below are some of the things that cause acid reflux and some of the treatments you can try that help relieve the problem.

Tomatoes and tomato sauces could be causing you to have acid reflux, so if you like Italian or Latin foods, you may want to cut down on your consumption and see if you feel better. In some people, when you eat tomatoes, the lower esophageal sphincter, or the LES, is relaxed in the body, which makes it more difficult for you to digest and swallow your food. The food will settle there, and you may suddenly feel very tired, and could get headaches and pressure in the limbs.

Coffee and tea are two common drinks that could cause heartburn or acid reflux, so if you have a cup of coffee in the morning, or a cup of tea at night before bed, you may want to eliminate these drinks from your diet and observe your health. The reason coffee and tea can cause reflux is due to the caffeine content; too much caffeine in some people's systems can cause the contents of the stomach to resurface in the esophagus.

We all try to stay away from fatty foods because they are not very healthy but if you aren't these foods could also be causing you to experience acid reflux. It takes your body longer to digest fried foods, which means they settle in your stomach and cause discomfort for a longer period of time. So, steer clear of fast food restaurants, and if you're cooking at home, be sure to bake or broil your meat or potatoes in order to cut down on the fat content and keep the strength of your LES intact.

You will want to pay special attention to the things that you're eating if you think that you may have acid reflux--certain foods could make your condition flare up if you're not careful. Side effects like stomach pain, burning in the throat, and a feeling of indigestion could occur after consuming these foods, and your symptoms could get so severe that you will have to be on bed rest for a while if your acid reflux goes untreated.

As well as avoiding certain types of foods you can also improve the condition by eating certain types. Omega 3 rich foods will improve your digestive system and help ease the problem of acid reflux. Walnuts, flaxseeds, beans, fish, olive oil and winter squash all provide you with concentrated sources of omega-3 fats.

Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux

Here's a few natural remedies for you to try.

Its very tempting to ignore the fact you have acid reflux when you have medication in your pocket. You can be sat in the restaurant looking at the menu thinking "to hell with it, the pain will soon be gone once I pop a tablet. The trouble with that is that after a while you are relying on those tablets and many of them can bring their own health problems and also as your condition worsens the drugs effectiveness will be less as your body becomes immune to the chemicals. Much better is to use natural remedies for acid reflux and we have put a few together here for you.

Before taking any of these or any other supplements, be sure to read the directions carefully, and to follow the dosages completely. You should also talk to your doctor if you are considering taking herbal remedies for acid reflux (especially if you are on other medications) and he will advice how much of the supplement you should take each day.

One of the nutritional supplements you'll want to take is burdock. This herb is a great body healer and helps to clean out the liver and kidneys during the digestion process. Burdock can help to clear up your reflux symptoms if you take it once or twice a day at meal times. You may also want to try celery seed as this supplement is great for helping to clean out the intestines. This means your body will be able to rid itself of toxins much quicker. Eating ray celery between meals will also aid in this process.

Increasing your intake of Omega-3 will improve your digestive system and so improve your acid reflux symptoms. Sea food is the best source of Omega-3 but if fish isn't your thing other great sources include walnuts, flax seeds, olive oil, beans and winter squash. All of these provide you with concentrated sources of omega-3 fats and have the added bonus of being great for the heart and also a proven memory booster. A diet rich in Omega-3 fats is one of the best natural remedies for acid reflux you can give yourself.

In addition to the above, taking a capsule of devil's claw with meals will also help you to feel better after eating, and will help you to resist the urge to lie down right after a meal. Devil's claw helps to ease the lining of the esophagus as well, and helps the food to settle in your stomach, so that it doesn't resurface in the esophagus as soon as you have eaten.

There are many other supplements you can take to aid your digestive system like borage oil, cascara or flax seed oil each of which have a reputation for cleaning the bloodstream which leads to more energy after a meal. Try putting that energy to good use by taking a 20 minute walk after your meal. Keep away from heavy foods that take longer to break down in your stomach such as pasta based meals and of course keep away from spicy foods. With a little care and understanding of what you are eating together with the one or two of the supplements mentioned above should provide you with all the natural remedies for acid reflux that you need.
