Acidophilus Pills

Almost everyone has heard of acidophilus pills and yet many of us are still not very sure what they are.  We have some vague idea that they're like "yogurt" pills and are good for us.

Well on this lens, we're going to define acidophilus and see exactly what it is and whether we do, indeed, need acidophilus supplements or whether we get sufficient in our food.

Define Acidophilus

Let's see what exactly is in acidophilus pills

Acidophilus is a type of bacteria - a good bacteria.

More precisely it is a member of the Lactobacillus family and is more properly called Lactobacillus acidophilus. There are many different strains within the L acidophilus family - some are better for us than others.

Acidophilus ferments sugar into lactic acid and it grown best in an acidic environment. It is one of the lactic acid bacteria and these are a necessary and important part of our diet.

So inside acidophilus tablets we find good bacteria - or at least that is what we SHOULD find!

A common problem of probiotic supplements is that when tested they do not contain the amounts of bacteria that the manufacturer has claimed.

The suggested dose is one tablet taken twice each day. This will give you 1 billion colony forming units of acidophilus. Many supplements contain multi probiotics - which is fine if that is what you want - but the problem is that often you don't know how much of the actual acidophilus you are getting.

Important!

Over the last decade a number of reports on probiotic supplements have been issued and sometimes the results have been less than favorable.

ConsumerLab keeps eye on acidophilus pills

A report back in 2004 by Brenda A Huff titled Caveat emptor. "Probiotics" might not be what they seem showed that many probiotic supplements did not contain what the manufacturers claimed they did.

Can Fam Physician. 2004 April; 50: 583-587

Today, thanks to rigorous testing by many independent consumer watchdog groups we can have much more confidence that we are getting what we pay for.

It provides findings for fourteen products that ConsumerLab.com selected for testing and thirteen additional products that passed the same testing through ConsumerLab.com's Voluntary Certification Program. It also includes information about two products similar to those tested. Brands included in the report are Advocare, Align, Ark Naturals, Culturelle, DDS, Dr. D, FloraStor, GNC, i-Flora, Jarrow Formulas, Kashi, Kyo-Dophilus, Metagenics, Nature Made, Nature's Bounty, Nature's Secret, New Chapter, Nutri-Vet, Optimal Pet, Phillips Colon Health, Proviable (Nutramax), Puritan's Pride, Solgar, Swiss Natural, Udo's Choice (Flora), Weil, and Vitamin World. In addition to providing test results, the report also reviews clinical information regarding probiotics.

Do I Need Acidophilus Pills For Good Health

The answer to that question depends very much on your diet. If you eat a good diet containing lots of fruit and vegetable, preferably unpeeled and not too thoroughly washed and eat plenty of fermented products whether it be yogurt, sauerkraut or naturally fermented cheese then most likely you already consume all the acidophilus that you need.

However some people do seem to need more than others or have specific health problems. Also, may of us live in situations that are less than ideal. Sure, we'd all like to wander each day through orchards where you can just pluck an apple from the tree and eat it - but the reality is that most of us don't. Most of us eat fruit that we are forced into washing very thoroughly - we wash away the good bacteria that were living on the skin of the fruit. However if we DON'T wash it, we're likely to get more bad bacteria that we want.

Catch 22!!
