Acid Reflux Symptoms and What to Eat

The first things to cover is "What Is Acid Reflux?"

Acid reflux is when the contents of the stomach are pushed back up into the esophagus. Your stomach has acid and enzymes, which can damage the lining of the esophagus, and cause the symptoms of heartburn.

What causes Acid Reflux is there's a small muscle between the esophagus and the stomach that acts as a barrier between the two. Normally the muscles relaxes and allows the entry of food into the stomach as you swallow. Once the food travels into your stomach, the muscle contracts and closes off the entrance.

Well, you don't have to be a genius or doctor to figure out what happens with Acid Reflux. The muscles relaxes and allows the food in the stomach to go backward up into the esophagus.

Some of the most common problem vegetables in the acid reflux diet are tomatoes and onions, while most other vegetables are allowed.

*Tomato is the most commonly mentioned problem vegetable, as it is a high acid vegetable and as such can cause severe heartburn or acid reflux symptoms and should be avoided completely.

*Onion are often another problem vegetable as it also contains high levels of acid and tends to lead to heartburn.

Recommended Vegetables for the Acid Reflux Diet

Vegetables such as green beans, peas, carrots and broccoli are actually recommended for an acid reflux diet and yams and potatoes may help to neutralize the acids and thus also be beneficial.

High alkaline vegetables such as broccoli, alfalfa sprouts, wheat grass, barley grass, cucumber, kale and parsley can help to correct the pH ion the body and so also reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Test Which Vegetables You Can Include in Your Acid Reflux Diet

Some vegetables, such as onions and garlic, may or may not cause acid reflux symptoms with different people. You should test which vegetables you can include in your acid reflux diet by keeping track of which vegetables bring on your symptoms and which ones do not.

Another factor which you should take into consideration when preparing your acid reflux diet is how you are going to cook the vegetables.

Some vegetables are fine when cooked one way but can cause acid reflux symptoms when cooked another way. Potato for example can be beneficial when baked but can cause symptoms when mashed. Mashed potato, even if it does not cause symptoms for you should be limited, while you can include baked potato in your diet regularly.

Test the way you cook different vegetables and see which cooking methods cause you more discomfort and pain and which cooking methods are safe.
