Acid Reflux or Acid Indigestion Are They the Same?

Many of us tend to use acid reflux and acid indigestion to mean the exact same thing. In actuality there are a number of differences as well as a number of similarities between the two. Just for the record, acid reflux is the more serious of the two and it is always a good thing to see your professional health care provider if you have constant problems with either.

This lense is intended to show the difference and what you casn do about taking care of both of them.

Acid reflux is also know as GERD

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Acid reflux is also know as GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and can be a very serious illness leading to esophageal cancer. Basically, what happens is that the acids from your stomach escape through a check valve (Sphincter muscle) into your esophagus and up the throat causing intense pain as it erodes the lining.

Many times acid indigestion is considered to be just a milder version of acid reflux. This is not the case even though there are many similarities between the two. Often the foods we eat or over eat can cause us to have acid indigestion. What we have done is to deluge our stomachs with an over abundance of food and it attempts to digest the food by producing acids. This process can cause that "gassy" feeling in our stomachs radiating up into our chest and even shoulder areas.

This problem is not acid reflux since it does not escape up into the esophagus. However if you have a weakened sphincter muscle then acid indigestion can cause the reflux. Technically, they are different animals even though they can be and many times are caused but the same process.

Regardless, if you are experiencing acid reflux or acid indigestion you are most likely in pain and discomfort. Fortunately both of these problems can be cured and managed by a few lifestyle changes.

Several Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Temorary Acid Reflux Relief Can Be Found

There are a number of different medicines on the market for acid indigestion that tend to eliminate the discomfort and pain but does not take care of the problem. There are some natural remedies for acid reflux and heart burn that not only eliminate the symptoms but also helps to alleviate the problem.

Of course perhaps the most natural would be to be careful of what you eat. Fatty and spicy foods can promote acid reflux commonly called heartburn. Those with high acidic content such as tomatoes and tomato dishes should be avoided or at least cut back on.

There are a number of foods that are known gastric acid stimulants. Things like onions, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts are easy things to stay away from but chocolate and peppermint can be a little tougher to avoid. You may not need to give these up completely but do learn to use moderation.

Some items that are better ingested during the day and not right before bedtime are coffee, alcohol, calcium supplements and vitamin C. Stay away from dairy products and milk right before bedtime as well since these will all stimulate your stomach acids.

A couple of other lifestyle changes you should do are pretty simple. Eat five to six smaller meals during the day and elevate your head while resting or sleeping. I had a friend who slept every night in his reclining chair so he did not experience the burning sensation. He finally got things under control and can now sleep in his bed with just a little elevation. Drinking water can help not only gastric problems but many other issues as well.
