Personal Account of a Middle Aged Acne Sufferer
If the information here helps you, I will be very pleased. Everything written here about acne is from my own personal experience.
As a teenager I felt left out when my friends all started buying special products like skin creams and face wash to clear up their spots! I honestly never suffered from spots, blackheads or pimples and maintained a clear complexion without the need for any special care.
After the age of 40 my skin took revenge on me. I began to see little whiteheads appearing around my nose and chin, but at first they were not a big problem and I simply put up with it. They would disappear for weeks at a time, and then return more strongly. But makeup covered them pretty well. After a couple of years the outbreaks became more intrusive and embarrassing. The spots were bigger and began to cause scars. they were also quite painful! was more embarrassed by the who gave me their (unasked) opinion on the problem. "Stress" came pretty high up the list from all my trendy workmates but I could see that the Acne was unaffected by stressful events.
I soon realised the acne was connected to hormone changes: I was experiencing the perimenopause, a term guaranteed to make anyone feel a little stressed or depressed. The Perimenopause can last for at least ten years, and at this time hormone levels fluctuate dramatically.
My cycles were also unpredictable, so i started taking the Pill again to regulate them. And if that was not enough, after being quite slim for my adult life I found that weight started to creep on more easily.
With all these other distractions, still I put up with the acne. I took some long courses of Tetracycline, and later Doxycycline - also handy for preventing malaria - prescribed by my GP. I was also prescribed Differin cream, but all that did for me was make my skin dry. These really made very little difference but I had plenty of other things to deal with and my skin went to the back of the queue.
I asked to be referred to a dermatologist, who prescribed Roaccutane - sometimes known as Accutane, depending where you live. He explained that I had tried all the other conventional treatments and that the prospects of improvement by taking Roaccutane were excellent. I got my prescription, and then made the mistake of telling friends and colleagues about the medication. Everyone seemed to have something negative to say, and I became nervous of starting the course. Roaccutane is a strong drug that contains a mega dose of vitamin A (Retinol) and needs to be taken for at least a month before seeing any real improvement. I also signed an undertaking to avoid getting pregnant, since the drug can cause birth defects. All this made me a little nervous about starting to take the course of Roaccutane, and then a friend mentioned that a Zinc supplement can be very helpful in curing skin problems. I know a lot of people who swear by natural remedies, and I am not normally among them but I decided to give it a shot.
At first, my skin started to improve but after two or three weeks I had one of my worst outbreaks ever - and just before Christmas. When I saw the photos I decided to stop messing around and take the drugs. After just a week, the difference was clear - and so was my skin! And I started off with just one 20mg capsule of Roaccutane on alternate days. So far so good, I continued the course for three months. Then I took a break of nearly six months: after that I had another outbreak and I now take the tablets for one month in three. That is sufficient to keep my skin clear and I will carry on until the effects of the menoapuse are clear.
When I see other women around my age suffering from acne skin problems I always want to tell them that there is a simple cure, although it is hard to approach a complete stranger, So I decided to write this small story up online and maybe you will see it at a time when you need a solution - I hope you have found this page useful.
