Acne Products for Adult Skin: Getting the most for your money

The market for acne products is booming, as adult acne is a highly visible affliction. There's over the counter medications, snake oil cures, and arcane mechanical devices that all claim to be effective treatment for skin care.

It's up to the consumer to make informed decisions about what the best products to fight adult acne are. To find adult acne products that are actually functional, a little research is necessary.

Over the Counter Medications and Vitamins

Adult acne products come in many forms, and over the counter medications are quite prevalent. These drugs can be purchased without a prescription, and are yet still very effective methods of fighting acne.

One of the most popular compounds for treating adult acne is benzoyl peroxide. Working most effectively on the acne condition known as Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes for short, which simply allows bacteria to infest in clogged follicles, causing the familiar acne conditions, benzoyl peroxide breaks down these areas, and can also reduce oil production. Benzoyl peroxide can be found in Clearasil, Fostex, Persa-Gel, and PanOxyl Dryox. Be careful with your clothes though, benzoyl peroxide acts as a bleach!

Salicylic acid, resorcinol, and sulfur break down on the more tame blackheads and whiteheads. Salicylic acid can be found in Stridex, Oxy Night Watch, and the Clearasil Clearstick and sulfur can be found in Sulpho-Lac Acne Medication, Liquimat, Therac Lotion, and Sulmasque. Sulfur and salicylic acid work very much the same way, promoting the introduction of new skin cells. Since the work with with similar effectiveness, salicylic acid is usually preferred, as it does not smell like sulfur.

Vitamins, too, are available at most grocery and drug stores. Vitamin B6 promotes proper metabolism of steroid hormones, which helps keep skin strong, decreasing its infection and hormone sensitivity. Vitamin A has been shown to reduce acne in women, as it can help hormone imbalances. Vitamin A occurs naturally in carrots, leafy green vegetables (lettuce, spinach, collard greens), and yellow and orange fruits such as peaches, apricots, and mangoes. Fish oil pills contain omega-3 fats which is a great acne preventive.

Devices

At high end spas, one can opt for a procedure that involves vacuuming out one's pores. It's kind of a gross idea, but it's one that can be implemented at home.

There are devices such as the Zeno Acne Clearing Device, which, instead of using a vacuum, use heat to clear pores and eliminate the bacteria that causes acne. Zeno recommends itself as a preventive method of skin care, rather than an acne cure. Reviews of this and other implements can be found on Amazon.com, which is actually a great resource for adult acne skin care product reviews. The Zeno has been reviewed 5 times by Amazon purchasers, and has garnered a 5 star rating.

Pore cleansers are also great adult acne products. The first step to gaining clear skin is to have clean pores. It's fairly easy to find adult acne product reviews for these devices as well, though there are seldom good reviews for these home devices.

Acne Cleansing Sets

Complete Acne Therapy systems have grown in popularity in recent years, in no small part due to the success of the Proactiv acne solution. The irony of the success of these products is that they are simply sets of commonly available acne preventives.

Most skin care advice for adult acne products will recommend the same things: a regimen of benzoyl peroxide based medications, salicylic acids, and general good skin care involving regular soaps. This way, they can all claim to be "dermatologist recommended," and it's completely true. They are technically completely true, because every dermatologist will recommend benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid before progressing to more "hard" medicines. The best products to fight adult acne will always be the best products to fight adult acne.

Proactiv has the most visibility of these "Complete Acne Therapy" systems, but there are plenty more that can be found at any drug store. Among the most popular of these sets is the Neutrogena Advanced Therapy System, which contains a bottle of salicylic acid, a bottle of SPF-15 lotion, and a bottle of benzoyl peroxide. None of these "Complete Acne Therapy" systems claim to be a miracle, and they all require strict adherence to their regimens. Proactiv has brought these systems a great deal of attention through their numerous celebrity sponsors such as Jessica Simpson, Elle Macpherson, and Vanessa Williams in their recurring television commercials. This campaign has met with great success, as 7 million adults have thus far utilized the Proactiv system. Again though, it's not greatly different from most of the benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid products available.

Active ingredient concentrations are the same for all of these adult acne products, as anything less would be ineffective, and anything more would be toxic. The only difference is that some of these products (such as Proactiv) will include exfoliating scrubs, These scrubs clear clogged pores in the same fashion that regular back brushing and wash cloth usage would. These scrubs can be a great benefit to the whole acne regimen, and open, clean pores are a great start to proper skin care, adult acne or not. Preventing infection by this treatment is much preferable to resorting to adult acne medicines such as doxycycline, which ward off infection chemically. Proper skin treatment keeps one looking young as well as keeping the skin fresh and clean.

Recommendations

There are plenty of acne products for adult skin care out there, and the best ones make themselves known. Check for customer reviews and testimonials on product sites and Amazon.com, and you'll most likely get a product that will help you.

The old standbys, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are always recommended adult acne treatment if conventional non-medical solutions don't work. "Complete Acne Therapy" sets are indeed effective solutions, and if you are careful, they can find a great deal.
