Acoma Pottery

Ranked #29,904 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #652,109 overall

This beautiful black and white pottery cannot be surpassed.

The hallmark of Acoma pottery is the fine parallel lines used to fill in areas on the pottery. These artists are able to use their brushes to place lines so close together, the lines and spaces are like fine corduroy.

For pots where the lines are not used, the Acoma use sweeping arches to divide the pot into sections to decorate. Sometimes a third color is added to the decoration on the pot, usually the reddish-brown of the clay itself.

Acoma potters also decorate pots with animals and plants. They make storytellers and pots shaped like turtles and other animals familiar to their pueblo in north-western New Mexico. Visit their home is you get a chance.

Southwest Pottery: Acoma | Porcelain Collectibles Guide
The Acoma pottery is fairly distinctive in that basic clay used by these people is usually covered in a white slip before it is decorated and fired. Combined with the black pigment used for the decoration, the majority of the Acoma pottery is black and white.
