Acoustic Guitars - Are They Magic?

Not without the magician - and that can be you!

Have you ever paused to listen for a moment to a musician gently strumming an acoustic guitar or performing a blazing, soul-stirring flamenco number? The sounds of an acoustic guitar invoke mystery and a feeling of romance for many people. Most of them never really stop to consider how versatile acoustic guitars are, but virtually everyone can enjoy the beautiful music these instruments make.

You may think about how much fun it would be to play the guitar at family get-togethers or for your friends at parties. But then, you think about how difficult it would be to learn, or how much lessons might cost. Also, you wouldn't know where to find the time to learn how to play properly.

It seems like a lot of people think that acoustic guitars are magic or something, and in the right hands, a guitar can almost be magical - but not by itself. The magic is in the music, not the instrument. The guitar is just the tool. Compare it to back when you were just learning how to write. Your tool back then was a pencil. As you grew up, you you improved your writing ability and started to write all kinds of material such as book reports and essays. The pencil was simply the medium that you used to create your writing. The same principle applies to musical instruments, including acoustic guitars.

The guitar is just an instrument that's used to produce music. The process of learning how to use a pencil is similar to how one learns to play guitar. Initially, before you learn how to play the guitar, you may just tinker with one, perhaps at a music store or when visiting a friend. You could liken it to scribbling with a pencil. But if you continue to pursue learning the guitar, Youll observe what happens if you move your hands a certain way or another. At first, need to just get comfortable with the guitar, and with things like acoustic guitar chords - but eventually your fingers will learn what to do and will almost do it on their own. Very soon, your guitar becomes an extension of your hands, a vehicle through which you express your musical thoughts.

To one who has never played the acoustic guitar it can be kind of intimidating even though it is a very compelling instrument. The music produced on a guitar seems larger than life to many people. They may even think its incredible that anyone could produce such amazing sounds from such a simple instrument. If you really want to play guitar, and seem to regularly find yourself staring at displays of acoustic guitars in department or music stores, or if you happen to have an acoustic beginner guitar sitting in your basement or attic just gathering dust, go ahead and learn how to play it. You'll probably wonder why you waited so long.

Looking For a Cheap Acoustic Guitar?

If You Want Something You Can Actually Play, Don't Go Too Cheap!

The cost of material used is the main reason for the final cost of a guitar. Most are made of wood, but some will be graphite or plastic. However, the main reason an acoustic guitar sounds the way it does is because of the wood it is crafted from. The sound of a guitar that is not made out of wood may cause you to give up learning because of the poor sound quality. A guitar make out of such cheap material that you don't even want to hold it probably isn't a wise investment. A better option would be to buy one of the less expensive guitars made out of wood.

The Yamaha F310 guitar is a good choice if you are looking for a cheap acoustic guitar. It features a mahogany back and sides with a solid spruce top. At $150-$200, this guitar is fairly easy on the wallet. It is also a good choice for the serious beginner.

If you are looking for something in the next lower price range, the Epiphone DR-100 is a good choice that usually sells for between $120-150. The sides and back are mahogany, and the top is made from spruce. It's designed with the beginner in mind, so there will come a time when you'll need to trade up. This is the perfect choice if you know you want to learn the guitar, but aren't quite sure how long your interest will last.

While not really a cheap acoustic guitar, the Seagull S6 is actually an exceptional value for the price. Any discussion of beginner guitars needs to include this one. This instrument has a beautiful solid cedar top with mahogany wood on the back and sides and is capable of producing a beautiful sound. Even professionals keep this guitar for years, despite owning a collection of much more expensive instruments. Priced at $400-$500, it may be more than you had budgeted, but if you are serious about taking up playing, you should give some real consideration to this guitar. You might be able to save by doing a search online, as its readily available model.

If you are looking for a cheap acoustic guitar for under $100 there is probably nothing worth recommending. A lot of these really can't be played. Cheaply made guitars are why many younger students quit learning to play. Remember that you get what you pay for, so stay away from these cheaper models and their bargain-basement qualities.

Even if you can only go with a cheap acoustic guitar, look for one with a top that is solid as opposed to one with a top made of plywood. The solid wood acoustic guitar will provide a rich and full tone. If it is in your budget, stick with models that have solid wood on the backs and sides as well.

If you can't pony up for a better quality new acoustic guitar, try to buy one second hand instead. If you buy a used guitar, it will have already developed a full and rich tone that you will usually not find in a brand new one. Many stores have a special section for used guitars and you can play each one until you find the one that suits your needs.
