Acoustic Guitar For Beginners - To learn or not to learn?
That is the question.....
"So Dave, what do I need to learn acoustic guitar?"
Well, pretty much the guitar, and not a lot of anything else.....oh, except patience.
And a TEACHER. <--it's in caps because it's very important, not because I'm shouting, I don't shout, I'm too lazy for that! ;)
"But Dave, some teachers are expensive".
True.
So in this case most people turn to looking for an online alternative, which is fine, but there are pitfalls to look out for. Before you buy any kind of guitar practice software, it would be a good idea to research it first. After all, you wouldn't buy a house or a car before looking at it at least once right?
"So what should I do? I don't want to be conned!"
Go nuts, dig around on the web, have a look at review sites, like about.com and pcworld.com. These sites have honest and unbiased reviews on all kinds of things. Also, you can go to Google and type in the following phrase:
For example: "Acoustic Guitar for Beginners - Software"
or: "Acoustic Guitar for Dummies"
And press enter. This will bring back a list of review sites and will allow you to make a more informed decision.
Or to look at some reviews now (compiled by yours truly :)) you can simply click here: Guitar Practice Software. Because I am such a nice guy, I've done some impartial reviews on guitar practice software. You can also check here for the lowdown on my favourite piece of online acoustic guitar learning software: Jamorama Acoustic Guitar Learning Software For Beginners. It has its very own lens, because I really was impressed with this.
"So do you check around the web Dave?"
Before I buy any kind of software, I always look at the top review sites on the web to make sure I'm not being scammed. But don't be put off by what I'm saying about needing to review first, there are some great pieces of guitar learning software out there. Just make sure you do your research first!
"Great! Any more tips?".
Sure, beginning acoustic guitar needs time, inevitably. But patience, and a willingness to learn and study scales is just as important. The more scales you know, the more choice you have about what you can play when you pick up your guitar. Beginners should also be aware that if they start with scales, from the first time they pick up a guitar, and work it into an everyday routine, they will become second nature and as a result, more interesting!
"Scales? Boring!"
Yes, it's dull for most people, learning guitar scales. But the effort and time you put into it, doubles the amount of enjoyment you get out of it. The greatest guitar players in the world all had to learn scales at some point. And it was totally worth it for them. It will be for you too.
"Promise?"
I promise. :)
Acoustic Guitar for Beginners - Quick tips
Quick Tips - Updated as often as possible
"Huh?", I hear you ask. Well if you have trouble keeping time with some of the more complex pieces, try tapping your foot. If you always tap your foot when playing the guitar it will begin to happen naturally and you will find it becomes easier to count along with the music you are playing.
Choosing the Right Strings
This takes a while and depends on what style you wish to play. For classical acoustic, it's best to start with standard steel wound strings, preferably light, while you figure out what you're comfortable with. Guitar strings that are too heavy may put you off, as they can be quite painful until your fingertips toughen up. Try some Martin 14s for example, or D'Addario are a good quality brand. Obviously the long term aim is to toughen your fingers up, but playing the acoustic guitar shouldn't mean you have to make your fingers bleed!
Cleaning Your Guitar
Ok, cleaning the guitar is boring for some people. I know this. But you should try and do it once a week. Cleaning the body takes nothing more than a good rub over with a lint-free duster. If you want to clean the neck, it does mean you should take of the strings. There are plenty of wax and polish products out there, that are good for this purpose, but I only ever use a lint-free duster, and that seems to be enough. Why lint-free? Lint will scratch your guitar all over the place. A clean guitar is a well-functioning guitar.
Making Time
A good way to learn acoustic guitar is on a schedule. Everyone has schedules and lives. But if you can can only find ten minutes a day, that's better than nothing! Yes you have a life, but the more you can practice guitar, the better you will be. I sometimes take my guitar to work with me, so I can play at lunch time! Seriously!
Tired fingers are flexible fingers!
Keep that in mind the next time your hands, arms and fingers feel like lead weights!
But to keep that nasty tiredness away for longer, always make sure you warm up first! Flex and stretch your fingers, arms and hands for about 3 minutes. Use some hand grips if you have them, heck, there's nothing wrong with doing a few push ups before you pick up your acoustic guitar.
Seriously, you'll appreciate it, just try it. :)

Classical Acoustic

Sometimes called Spanish Guitar, Nylon Guitar or even sometimes the Solo Guitar. This is probably the best acoustic guitar for beginners. The great thing about this instrument is the lovely deep golden tone (on the larger models), and the fact that you can play it anywhere. Its also easier to play if you are like me and have larger fingers than most people as the gaps between the strings are usually wider than on the electric. In my opinion this is a perfect acoustic guitar for beginners.
One of my favourite solo acoustic guitar players is Jose Gonzales. He was the guy who rewrote "Heartbeats" which was a cover version of a song by The Knife. You can find him on the tube, a fantastic fingerstyle player. This is a guy who really inspires me on the acoustic guitar.

The 12 String Acoustic

The 12 string guitar is a wonderful instrument, but a pain to tune! It has 12 strings, obviously, in 6 pairs or "courses". The tones produced on a 12 string tend to be more vibrant and richer than a 6 string acoustic, and it has this natural kind of.....well, chorus effect because of all the different resonant output produced by each strum.
It really is an awesome guitar to play, the sound is so full and rich. One of the most famous players ever to use a 12 String was John Lennon. In fact, there is a 12 String called the John Lennon Vox 12 string.
This isn't really an acoustic guitar for beginners, but don't let that stop you trying!

Resonator Guitar
This guitar has a very unique sound. Rather than producing sound using the traditional wooden backboard, like a normal acoustic guitar, resonators use small metal cones inside a plate on the front of the guitar. It produces a very unique sound, hard to explain in words.
Notice the round metal plate on the body? That is where you will find the small cone shaped holes that produce this instrument's unique sound. You will generally find resonator guitars anywhere you find a country or folk scene. Also, a very famous exponent of the Resonator was George Harrison of Beatles fame!

Flamenco Guitar

The Flamenco is another type of classical guitar but built for the purpose of playing Flamenco music. It tends to be smaller and lighter than the classical guitar. It has a sturdy construction due to the fact that the Flamenco style can be faster and can take a heavier toll on the guitar.
While the Flamenco looks very similar to the Classical acoustic, notice how much wider the neck is? Also, the headstock is usually very different too, in that it must be sturdier to cope with heavier strikes to the strings and more stress on.the neck If you like Flamenco music, or would like to introduce yourself to it, then check out Javier Conde. You'll find him on the tube or just through a quick Google Search. A great player.

Acoustic Guitar for Beginners - Guitar Styles
The different acoustic guitar styles! Basic Information.
Spanish Guitar
This is a very physical style involving lots of scales and a lot of tapping on the body of the guitar in combination with fast strumming. It's an amazing sound though and there are some truly awesome exponents of the style. As I said earlier, a great acoustic guitar style for beginners.
Country
Country is great to learn when you want to know about chord structures in relation to bass notes. For example if you want to know how to change from C to D or F to G with bass notes, then this is a great style to learn. The techniques in Country include finger-style and rhythm combined with bass plucking to produce a great, whole bodied sound.
Funk
Funk is one of my favourite styles of guitar because its so......funky lol! To play funk guitar you'll need an electric and an amplifier, and a wah wah pedal is always good. You can get a wah pedal for about $35 from Boss. Funk involves a lot of sliding up and down the neck and can be a real finger killer. I've actually bled! It's also used with a combination of picking to produce really clever-sounding riffs. Funk is a very difficult style though, and it's best to start at the very beginning with this.
Blues
Another one of my favourites and something I play a lot. Blues can be hard to learn and it can be hard to distinguish what kind of blues you are actually listening to, because it all has the same origin. However, my favourite style of blues has to be Mississippi Delta blues. Lovely slow, moody tones, in addition to really great fingerstyle makes me really smile a lot. It's also very satisfying to play.
Ok, so I'll be back soon with some more styles, tips and updates, In the meanwhile, leave a comment if you need help or advice with anything and I will do my best to get back to you ASAP!
Have fun!

- Good stuff!!
I really liked the video of the 12 year old, very pretty song.
I've played acoustic guitar for a couple of years now, I love it. I've done a couple of shows, mostly just at coffee shops, but I also put together an outdoor one last year and played, its a blast.
You should check out my squidoo page on how to build guitar chords.
I cover how to build basic triads, seventh chords, inversions, drop 2 chord voicings, and how to use extensions.
Thanks

- Hi George! To learn guitar, only needs patience and time. And if you can afford it a teacher! If you are completely new though, the best advice I can give you is to watch how other people do it. There is nothing wrong with imitating the pros. But I can't emphasise enough, get a teacher. If you can't afford a teacher (I know they are costly) consider buying some computer software (for example the Jamorama software at the bottom of this page under my favourite link). It has over 100 videos as well as a jam-along session section with 25 backing tracks for you to add your own custom riffs to. Keep checking back for more updates George, and thanks for stopping by!
