Acoustic Guitar Playing Requires Good Habits

Endless hours of acoustic guitar playing can strain your back if you do not maintain correct upright posture. If you want to learn how to hold your guitar correctly, here are a few tips. Grab your guitar and hold it with the back against your stomach. Point the guitar neck to your left if you are right handed. Set the guitar body on your upper right thigh. Next, grab the guitar neck with your left hand, wrap your right arm around the guitar body, and place your right hand on the strings. If necessary, adjust your body position so that you feel completely comfortable playing guitar.

If you are right handed, you use your left hand to press the strings and construct chords while playing guitar. Your left hand fingers are bent and pressed down on the strings and fret board.

The curvature of the guitar neck allows your hand to fit comfortably into the shape of the neck. Your thumb arches easily over the top of the neck. This thumb position is best for constructing chords. Another option, which is most common when playing guitar scales, is to press your left thumb on the back of the guitar neck. Try using each thumb position, and choose the one that is most comfortable.

Make Sweet Music With That Acoustic Guitar

Strum the strings with your right hand to make sounds. Position your right arm over the body of the guitar. Your right bicep should rest on the top of the guitar. Position your right hand in front of the guitar's sound hole. When playing guitar, the sound comes out of the sound hole.

Picks are commonly used when playing guitar. Hold the pick between the thumb and forefinger of your right hand. Then, pull the pick across the guitar strings. This is similar to plucking the strings with your fingers, but you will want to use a bit more pressure.

Left-handed musicians do not need to worry. There are two options for acoustic guitar playing left-handed. First, you can re-string a right-handed guitar to reverse the order of the strings. Second, you can buy a specially made left-handed guitar.

While getting the hang of acoustic guitar playing, maintaining proper body position as well as holding the guitar correctly while playing will enable you to play for longer durations as well as to produce right sound. Don't be tempted to slump into what you think is a cool-looking position; you'll end up feeling tired too soon and look ridiculous as well.
