There are several reasons that acting lessons will help aspiring actors and actresses, in addition to anyone who's considering entering a career in film, theater or another type of performing arts.
1. NETWORKING
Acting classes in New York City are often the best way to meet fellow actors and actresses in New York City. The acting course scene is extraordinarily vibrant in New York, and almost everyone who is considering or pursuing a career in the performing arts is taking or has taken a class to work on a particular skillest that they feel needs improvement, or will get them to the next level in their career. Taking acting lessons brings people together - by reading script lines together, exchanging improv banter, and sweating it out on the stage, actors in these classes truly come together and get to know each other very well. What better way to meet the community of people who will be able to help you out?
2. CAREER ASSESSMENT
Acting classes in New York are an incredible way to decide whether or not the performing arts are an arena that you want to dedicate the rest of your life to. Not only are these acting courses and lessons filled with real actors and actresses that can tell you about what the lifestyle is like, but you'll also get a feel for what it's like to be on stage yourself. Many potential students imagine themselves as the life of the theater, but then freeze when on stage, and NY acting classes are the perfect place to vet your own abilities. In addition, New York has some of the best acting workshops out there, that can also help you determine your strengths, weaknesses and areas of focus.
3. HONING YOUR CRAFT
For those of you who are determined to be professional actresses or actors, what better way to work on the skills that need improvement than to take a class? Typical on set or on stage performances may lack the critical instruction you require to continue improving your craft.. The entire purpose of an acting class is to work on specific skills, to perform and then receive constructive feedback that can help you improve.

Styles of Acting Classes in NYC
Let's understand what the different NYC action options are
Quite naturally, there are several types of NYC acting classes, and it makes sense to give a quick overview of the different types of acting classes before getting into how to find them in New York City. After all, how to find the right type of acting lessons if you don't even know the types available?
First, some quick definitions:
Acting Workshop NYC: Typically, acting workshops are one session only, are open to the general public, and focus on training students in a very specific skill. They are the cheapest of all types of acting lessons, and often employ guest speakers because of their one-off nature.
Acting Class NYC: A more structured classroom setting, acting classes typically are more than one session, though they continue to be available to the general public. Acting classes in New York often have a focus on a specific set of acting skills, since there are a limited number of sessions, and most actors and actresses want to focus on honing a specific skill rather than continually learning a broader range.
Private Acting Lessons NYC: Typically acting lessons are defined as smaller, more individualized sessions of acting instruction. Acting lessons rarely include a structured curriculum - often it's up to the actor or actress to define their own needs, although sometimes the acting teacher will diagnose flaws in the actor's technique, and then work on fixing them. Typically, acting lessons do not have set schedules, as they are coordinated by instructor and pupil.
Acting Courses NYC: Acting courses are the most formal style of acting education available. Most of the time they are super focused, fairly expensive and open only to a select few individuals who have either joined a program or who must undergo an audition or evaluation before they are offered admission to the course. Acting courses can be intense, and are for serious actors only - still, it's a great taste of what the profession will be like, and often courses boast some of the highest quality instruction and best networking opportunities.

Top 5 Acting Classes in New York
Because Top 5 Acting Classes are too hard to pick, we actually picked types of classes!
Based on search volume statistics within the New York City region, we've compiled a cursory list of the most popular types of acting classes for New Yorkers. Naturally, these numbers are estimates only, and may not reflect the true popularity of the various types of art lessons available, yet it's interesting to note what people seem to be searching for!
5. Classical Acting Courses in New York
They're certainly not for everyone, but classical acting classes still occupy a top 5 spot within the set of acting classes that New York City is searching for. When we say classical, we mean more traditional theater-type classes, for actors who wish to portray Shakespearian characters or other historical acting techniques or theories. These styles of theater will surely never go out of fashion and therefore occupying this niche is certainly a way for actors and actresses to stay relevant - these acting classes will also focus on teaching you a language you've probably never used!
4. Voice Acting Classes NYC
Clearly voice acting is one thing that a lot of actors want to study. Voice acting lessons work on training the actor's voice to reflect the exact emotion or projection called for within the scene or setting. While these acting classes certainly work on inflection, tone, and style for those actors who are attempting to inject more feeling into the words that they utter, voice acting classes also focus on teaching on-stage actors how to project across an audience without burning out their voices before the second act of the play.
3. Method Acting Classes In NYC
Everyone's heard of the great method actors, and apparently their styles have inspired a new generation of actors to seek classroom instruction regarding how to be a method actor. Method acting lessons focus on helping the actor to discover a unique approach to studying the role they've been assigned, with the final goal that their acting should fully represent the reality of what it means to play a certain character. Method acting courses can be grueling - they often force actors to get down and dirty, deeply into the backgrounds of the characters they're striving to emulate.
2. Improv Classes in New York City
The show Whose Line is it Anyway? has inspired an entirely new generation of Improv actors - what's more is that improv acting classes are popping up all over New York City. NYC has a vibrant improv class scene; members of groups like the Upright Citizens Brigade will be the first to state that New York is the single best place to learn improv within a classroom setting. Courses on improv can often be the most fun, but only for students who find themselves quickly able to pull funny sentences to their tongues. More traditional actors are often stifled by improv classes, as they're used to memorizing a script; still, the challenge and lively atmosphere of these classes is worth the cost for any serious actor looking for instruction.
1. Film and Television Acting Classes in New York City
Not surprisingly, the most popular acting classes are the ones that lead to the biggest actor paychecks. Film and Television classes are the most searched for, indicating that actors and actresses want to get out there and on film as soon as possible. Film and Television courses are typically the most competitive, primarily because of the volume of applicants, yet rare is the student that does not cite their experience within these workshops and lessons.
And there you have it - the top 5 most popular types of acting classes in New York City!

How to Find Acting Classes in NY
Finding acting lessons isn't easy, but we'll do our best to help!
First of all, there's a new website called CourseHorse on its way that's worth checking out - it seems like it will offer the best way to find toacting classes in NYC
Until it launches, finding acting classes or lessons in New York City isn't won't be easy. Even though New York is second only to Los Angeles in terms of the number of different acting courses available, there aren't many resources that can very easily put you in touch with the acting classes you're looking for. Most students need to find classes that fit their schedule, take place in their neighborhood and meet their price range, but it takes quite a bit of effort to find an acting class in New York that fits all these requirements. Still, we do our best here to list some of the resources available.
1. ACTING CLASSES IN GOOGLE
We hate to point out the obvious, but Google right now is perhaps the best way to find the acting classes in NY that you're looking for. Google of of course has its issues; the top results are always acting schools, and they're the schools that pay the most money to build websites in a way that optimizes them within Google. Still, these New York acting schools are definitely some of the first to try, and Google will produce a pretty decent list of acting programs and schools. Still, it doesn't give you any ability to filter this list by schedule or location, you're stuck scanning each site for its acting classes, and reading through course descriptions to find out if they meet your requirements.
2. ACTING CLASSES IN CRAIGSLIST
Trying to find acting classes in CraigsList can also be a bit difficult but nonetheless, many providers of acting classes post classes here, and aspiring actors and actresses would be remiss not to take a look at which acting lessons are available on Craigslist. The problems with Craigslist are typically well known: many posts are untrustworthy, many acting schools that post aren't really schools at all, and posts quickly fall out of date so that the acting classes or lessons you find will already have been filled or closed. Still, Craigslist is a decent source for acting classes - you've just got to be a little bit wary of which ones you follow up on.
3. LOCAL THEATERS AND VENUES
Often, providers of acting classes go to the one place that aspiring actors can always be found - the stage! Many local theaters and performance venues have posting boards for upcoming local classes, and aspiring actors and actresses should definitely hit their local venues to check out what's posted. We can't of course guarantee that every local theater will list the acting classes and lessons near them, but we know for sure that many of them do!
