Find a Great Monologue for Teens

by EM

5 Rules for Finding Great Monologues for Teens

If you think finding a monologue for teens is hard, then please read this.

When trying to find a good monologue, teens are often out of luck. Most of the best monologues are written for adults and children, not teenagers. This is because the majority of writers are adults and think that teens are either too hard to understand or too superficial to have in performance. I think both of these excuses are ridiculous, but, as I am not a writer, I can't fix it. What I can do is help you to find great monologues for teens with the subsequent rules:

1) Focus on your personal assets, not your performance assets- Are you goofy? Faithful? Dependable? Determined? These seem like ridiculous questions when you're discussing monologues, but knowing your assets can help you to hone in on your monologue options. One of the most crucial things about looking for a monologue for teens is looking for a monologue that embodies you and not your talent. There are lots of teens who can act- directors want a person they like, so show your personality off!

2) Steer clear of the cliché- If your monologue might be seen in a teen movie, don't do it. Subject is crucial, particularly when it comes to monologues for teens. Find something that you are passionate about and everyone else will be passionate about it, too.

3) Keep to your age range- I know that it's hard finding monologues for teens, but that's who you are! The only time it's ok to stray from your age range is if you look youthful enough to be a kid; there's nothing wrong in trying out for children's parts when you're a teen, in fact it's supported! (but only if you look really young). Never, I repeat, never try-out with an adult monologue.

4) Read the script- it's to find monologues online, but you can't perform the monologue well until you know what's motivating it. Looking for a monologue for teens online is a good thought, but go to the library and find the whole play. Read the script, and your effort will be obvious (and with any luck, it'll get you the role!).

5) Have fun!- pick a monologue you will like working on. Your passion will shine through and people will see it!

Follow these tips and finding a great monologue for teens will be easy!

Tips For New Actors

by Ryan Larson

Well you've decided that you want to be an actor, and really want to make a go of it. You realize it's going to be a lot of work and that it won't be easy. Here are a few tips to help you on your way.

First, get a computer. You'll need one when you start writing your resume, for scanning your headshots and to search for work. Create a website for yourself, something as simple as johnsmith.com will work. This is where you can really market yourself. Post your headshot and resume on it. Include some audio and video clips. Include your latest jobs on it. Make is as professional as possible. Make sure you include this web address on your resume.

Don't let one day go by that you don't actively search for work. There are many sites online (which is one of the reasons you have that computer) for you to check, Playbill, Actors Access and Craigslist just to mention a few.

Stay close to where the acting jobs are. Join a theatre group or acting company. This is a great way to remain fresh in your acting and also a great way to network, you never know who knows about a job that could be great for you. Continue taking acting classes. They always help and look good on your resume, and again, a great way to network.

Make sure you have a variety of monologues prepared. Also, always carry a copy of your resume and headshot with you. It's also a good idea to have your resume, headshot and cover letter ready to be mailed whenever a potential part comes up.

Acting Tip: The Musts For Every Actor

by Amy Schulz

DO student, experimental, low-budget, and independent films. Do community and independent theater. Remember, acting is doing--not just studying and reading about it. The more experience you have acting, the more you learn, the more you'll grow, and the better your acting will be.

DO go for a variety of roles. This way you will stretch yourself as an actor--which will make you a more well rounded actor.

DO get a computer--you'll be using it A LOT. It's an essential tool for any actor to have a computer or to at least have access to one (if you don't have a computer, I suggest setting aside some cash and investing in one). You will be spending a lot of time on your computer creating letters, keeping your resume up to date, editing photos, and looking for work.

DO put up your own acting site on the World Wide Web. This is probably the best way to market yourself (second only to your headshot and resume), and it's accessible to anyone with a computer, 24/7. Here, you can promote your latest news and endeavors, nicely display your resume, photos, and headshots, and include audio and video clips. Talk about standout!!!

DO look for acting jobs EVERYDAY. Essential sites to frequent are Playbill, Backstage, Actors Access, and Craigslist. Also check out the 'links' section of my website.

DO your mailings every day--or every day that you find something to submit for. Even if you don't think you're quite right for the part, but you suspect that you could be, submit yourself anyway. Trust me, sometimes it pays off--you may inspire the film-maker or director and change his or her mind about the character. It's worth every try.

DO have a variety of monologues ready to go at all times (comedic, dramatic, classic, and contemporary).

DO carry headshots and resumes with you at all times. You never know who you'll run into!

DO take classes whenever you can.

DO join a theater group or company--this will inevitably keep you on your toes!

DO your own thing. MAKE your acting career happen. Write a play, stage a reading--and then star in it. Make your own movie.

DO work with other actors. Establish friendships. Collaborating is great!

DON'T give up on your dream.
