At the ages of 5 upwards, our children are developing fast, and we want to keep up, they have probably just started school, and you are noticing certain developmental milestones in your child, an important one at this time is helping to develop their Fine Motor Skills, and hand eye co-ordination.

Early stage puzzles and play dough, have helped shape and stimulate fine motor development because they require controlled use of hand and finger muscles, early on. And possibly the kids are just plain bored of them now. I know from working in a school that resources had to be cheap, and the more creative the better, it is too expensive just to run and out and buy something, especially if your budget is already spent.

My daughter is 10 and likes to use squared graph paper, to draw her design.
There are many different mosaic tile designs that children can try out. However, in the beginning they should start with simple designs. Patterns of images that they see in day-to-day life should be practiced first. The simple designs for children include those of animals, birds, etc.

Some glue and old magazines. The children love the thought of cutting these up, and can choose their colours themselves from the pages.
You don't need great artistic skill here either, you could use a children's' colouring book for inspiration, or to trace around the outline, let their imagination run wild, creating their mosaic masterpiece. Perhaps a name plate for their room.
Get them to roughly draw their desired picture. whilst they are doing this you can be cutting up the paper firstly into strips, then into smaller squares.
Start gluing the pieces of cut paper.

We personally prefer using a small block of colored desktop block notebooks, this means the kids can cut up the small pieces of paper, you can limit how much they get easier, great idea for classrooms, and you also do not waste as much paper this I have found is a much cheaper way to do it.
