Preschool Ideas
Speaking and Listening
Encourage your child:
by showing them how to greet people,
to use a telephone,
to sing rhymes, songs and chants,
to practice following instructions,
by modeling how to be an active listener through nodding and making eye contact,
to play dress ups and role play characters from favorite stories,
by encouraging talk and description when using a range of toys and materials for play and craft.
Reading
Make a regular time for reading together.
Talk about books.
Use the pictures to predict what is going on. Ask your child to make suggestions.
Provide a range of reading material that interest your child.
Join the local library.
Read old favorites again and again and soon your child will be reading them to you.
Writing
Provide a range of materials to encourage writing and drawing. All the materials don't have to be new, for example, used envelopes from your mail, store catalogs for cutting and pasting pictures.
Write together. When you make a shopping list encourage your child to make one too. When you write cards, letters, encourage your child to add to yours or write their own.
Write signs and labels for things around the house with your child. A sign for their door is a good place to start.
Math
Math is so much more than just counting. Here are a few preschool ideas for math.
Search for number in your house, on a trip in the car, at the store.
Count objects whenever you can, socks in the washing basket, toy cars, dolls, biscuits.
Finding shapes.
Simple jigsaws.
Learning the time: morning afternoon, night, days, months, seasons.
Learning the language of position: up, down, in front, behind, next to, through.
Hope you found these activities for preschoolers helpful.

Beginning Essentials in Early Childhood Education
Beginning Essentials is a condensed foundations textbook that introduces the early childhood student to the field, the child and age range, the teacher's role, the environment, and major issues in the field of early childhood education. Designed to assist students in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to become effective, competent teachers and caregivers, the content is presented in four distinct sections of the text. Each section is designed to answer one of the key questions every student of early childhood education wants answered: What is the Field? Who is the Child? Who is the Teacher? and What is Being Taught? The text places an emphasis on multiculturalism and developmentally appropriate practice, and many voices from the field are presented, maintaining that there are many authoritative voices to learn from. Special features of the text include "Our Diverse World" sidebars, which weave issues of diversity throughout the text; What Do You Think boxes, which connect the reader to the content presented; and a chapter devoted to history and issues. This well-organized material is enhanced by a host of sidebars, photos, chapter activities, and integrated technology.Beginning Essentials in Early Childhood Education

- Good information. Our daughter has 2 1/2 year old quadruplets and an older son who just turned 4. We keep them a couple days a week to give the parents a break, and we're trying to get them into somewhat of a "pre school" routine. Kinda hard with 5 of them under the age of 4, but we're working at it. Thanks for the info.
