My 8 year old just had a Memorial Day show at her school. One of the song's was Fifty Nifty United States. They had to memorize all of the 50 states in alphabetical order for this song. What a great lesson!

I forgot to mention here something that my sister told me about the importance of rhyme for children. She was a reading tutor with AmeriCorps for a couple years and work with a kindergarten teacher that told her that children who can't rhyme have a very difficult time with reading, so these fun activities are a lot more than fun, they are essential for learning.

What a wonderful, fun and effective way to learn. Yup, that's how I learned my ABC's, now tell me what you think of me....

I learned my alphabet many, many years ago with the alphabet song and it often still comes to mind when I am filing. :-D
  • LisaAuch Dec 8, 2010 @ 11:19 am | delete
I helped educate children with social and emotional difficulties, some did not know their alphabet, never mind a nursery rhyme, the basic fundamentals taught in pre-school is so much more, as you correctly point out! Wonderful advocacy for pre-school education!

I have found that when my classroom is really loud and unsettled that I can sing to a child or two and it calms the entire room down! I can't imagine teaching or even raising my own child without music.

What a fun and useful lens! Only today I took my nine-month old granddaughter to the library Baby Rhyme Time for the first time. The room was packed with moms, nannies, grandpas and (I'm pretty sure I was the only) one grandma and their charges, newborn to three years old. Our little one has loved books and being read to since she was born, and in her way sings along with me. Thanks to you, I've a treasure-trove of new rhymes and songs to share with her. Thank you so much for doing this lens.

hi, great, great lens. i absolutly agree with you about the importance of rhythmes, rhyme and music. I am myself a gr8 music lover (proof: my lenses about music) and during my study I worked as a piano teacher. So i could experience first hand how influential the impacts of music are on children. They all really loved the music and playing the piano. I agree with you that a good education should use and utilize songs, music, playing an instrument and so on. I gave your lens 5 stars. Have favorited this lens plus this lens is added to the lensrolls on all my lenses. Keep up this great work :-)

Thanks for a great lens. 5 stars for you. Preschool songs are not only fun but help children learn. Most children can sing the alphabet long before they can recognize the letters. Have a look at my lens Activities for Preschoolers
