Browse around to learn more about an incredibly entertaining actor who went from obscurity to cinematic success.
He's also written three books, one which is his autobiography and diary of behind the scenes at many of his movies, as well as The Wah-Wah Diaries, the autobiographical view of his childhood in Swaziland and a behind the scenes look at his directorial debut - Wah-Wah, and also a novel, By Design, which is a busy and crafty story about, what else, Hollywood.
Richard E. Grant - Early Life
Born Richard Grant Esterhuysen in Swaziland on May 5, 1957. In 1982 he attended University of Cape Town in South Africa, studying English and Drama, fields that would serve him well in his adult life.
In 1982 he moved to London, England and changed his name to Richard E. Grant (commonly referred to as REG).
In 1986 he married Joan Washington.
His first big break came with the title role in Withnail and I, released in 1987.
After finishing filming on Warlock, their daughter Olivia is born on January 4th, 1989.
REG Films in the 80s

Withnail and I - A comic and tragic farce, Withnail and I depicts the life of two struggling actors in 1969 London.
Also starring Paul McGann and Richard Griffiths, the movie has something of a cult status and has its own drinking game (which is a theme of the alcoholic Withnail).
Note: Richard E. Grant is a teetotaler, and had to drink alcohol at the Director's request to give him the understanding what it was like to be drunk and hung over.
Also, for those interested, here is the Withnail and I Drinking Game. Please drink responsibly, in other words, don't play this game.
Warlock - An unlikely shift from more dramatic rolls, REG played the witch hunter Giles Redferne opposite Julian Sands' title villain. Also, stars Lori Singer as the woman trapped in the middle between the warring powers.
An entertaining flick produced by Roger Corman.

REG Films in the 90s

Henry and June - REG plays the cuckolded Hugo Guiler as his wife Anais Nin meets and begins a relationship with Henry and June Miller.
L.A. Story - REG plays Roland Mackey in the straight-faced comedy lampooning and poking fun at events in the City of Angels. Features Steve Martin and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Hudson Hawk - REG gets to chew the scenery as maniacal villain Darwin Mayflower in the movie everyone seems to want to forget. If you take it for what it is, a tongue-in-cheek caper movie, you might enjoy it, if for nothing else, REG's withering personality and preposterous dialogue (delivered brilliantly alongside fellow scenery-chewer Sandra Bernhard). Bruce Willis stars as the titular character. If you liked Moonlighting, you might get Hudson Hawk.
Samples of Darwin Mayflower's ridiculous genius:
"I'll torture you so slowly, you'll think it's a career."
"History, tradition, culture. These are not concepts! These are trophies I keep in my den as paperweights!"
"If Da Vinci was alive today, he'd be eating microwave sushi, naked, in the back of a Cadillac with the both of us."
"What can I tell you? I'm the villain. "
Darn right.
Bram Stoker's Dracula - As a suitor to Lucy, and caretaker of the deranged Renfield, REG gets good screen time in the star-studded adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Twelfth Night - REG gets to tread the boards with some Shakespeare (which he should do more of) as Sir Andrew in this 1996 adaptation of the Bard's play. Also features Helena Bonham Carter.

REG Films in the New Millenium

Gosford Park - REG plays George in this 1930s murder mystery, uniting Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon before they reappeared in Harry Potter films.
Corpse Bride - REG supplies the voice for the oily Barkis Bittern in the Tim Burton animated feature. He has also done quite a number of voice overs for games and TV.

Richard E. Grant Has a Bacon Score of 2
Richard E. Grant is a 2 in many ways, but an easy connection is Dracula (with Gary Oldman) to Murder in the First with Kevin Bacon.
Richard E. Grant Books
REG has also written a novel about Hollywood, By Design. His acidic charm comes through on every page.
