Breathe up to combat acute sinusitis

Acute sinusitis happens when you have a viral infection such as the common cold or a bacterial infection. Some of the symptoms are prolonged cold, nasal congestion, headache, fever, bad breath, fatigue, muscle aches and pain and a persistent cough.
It can also be triggered by air pollution, airborne allergens and dry or cold air. Air which has the lowest possible number of dust particles, bacteria and contaminants can allow our respiratory organs to work as they should and ensure that all the cells in the body receive the oxygen they require.

Good health depends on breathing correctly and maintaining a balance proportion between the gases found in the air. This does not seem easy for the reasons such as -
- Not breathing properly - shallow respiration
- Spend most of your time in enclosed spaces where the oxygen levels are lower than carbon dioxide.
- Contaminants in the atmosphere

We know that exercise is good for your overall health as when you exercise, the cells in your muscles absorb more oxygen and release more carbon dioxide and this process increases the frequency of respiration and the amount of oxygen inhaled with each breath.

Breathing deeply and not taking shallow breaths has enormous health benefits such as -

- More blood flows to the parts in the lungs that air cannot reach properly and thus prevents us from catching a respiratory infection.
- Sends sufficient oxygen to our brain reducing drowsiness, apathy, lack of concentration and irritability.
- Ensures that air reaches all corners of our lungs to receive a correct blood flow.
- Having a correct blood flow builds resistance to infections of the respiratory tract such as acute sinusitis.
- Helps to mobilize the mucus trapped in the respiratory tract and expelled through expectoration, thus improving the mucus membranes of the respiratory system which can boost your resistance to infection.
- Greater vitality when there is sufficient oxygenation to prevent our cell metabolism from slacking.

Learning how to breathe deeply

We have to learn how to breathe deeply to fill our lungs with air and exhaling slowly.
- Avoid breathing through your mouth. Breathe through your nose as this organ is designed and structured to control the temperature and humidity of the air entering your lungs. It also acts as a filter against foreign particles that would have otherwise dive right into your lungs to trigger your acute sinusitis.
- While standing or sitting, do not slouch but stand upright with your shoulders back and your chest forward as it will help you in taking deeper breaths.
- Take at least 3 deep breaths, 3 times a day with proper ventilation like having your windows open or out in the fresh air.
- Practice deep breathing while walking up the stairs by adapting your breathing to the pace of your legs.
- Try to remain in the exhalation state longer than in the inhalation state as this breathing helps you to relax. Breathe in to the count of four and out to the count of six. As you exhale, relax your body. Raise your hand as you exhale, count to three and at the count of three; drop your hand as a signal to relax the jaw and the body.

You do not need to spend a cent to combat your acute sinusitis as air is free but needs your commitment and determination to search for knowledge on how to breathe correctly.
