Area Community Exchange
Ranked #17,865 in Healthy Living, #265,544 overall
By Residents, For Residents, with Residents
Area Community Exchange mainly work within our own community; Chicago Lawn, Chicago, Ill.; but have spread out when necessary. We work on problems and issues that affect the community and hope to get more residents involved in taking care of their community and make it safe for everyone. The Red Butterfly represents hope, energy and new beginning for our neighborhood. We have sponsored events like National Night Out in August and Take a Bite Out of Crime in October. We also try to sponsor a event in September called Back to School - Kid Safety; so far we have done only one last year but hope we can do one this year if we have the money.
A good neighborhood is not so much about the houses as it is the people who live in them.

Don't keep the door open for burglary
Awareness is the foundation of personal safety. You can't possibly defend yourself if you are oblivious to the danger. Unfortunately locks on everything we own is now necessary. But one has to think of locks more as something that can deter a burglary opposed to stopping a burglary.
There is no doubt that if a burglar wants to break in bad enough they will find a way; locks or no locks. By you taking the right actions before it happens can help you from becoming a victim.

Actions burglars will take
Burglars most time will case you place before attempting a robbery. Lock up ladders and put curtains or blinds on garage and basement windows. Secure items in your garage like snow blowers, lawn mowers, grills and bicycles. Do not leave notes on your door saying where you went and/or how long you will be gone. Make sure your door hinges are on the inside of the door. When you move into a new home or if you have been broken into change the locks immediately.
What to do if you are a victim
If you come home to find you have been broken into, do not entry, use your cell phone or go to your neighbor to call 911. Do not touch or disturb anything till police have inspected for evidence.
There is no 100% way to guarantee that you will never be a victim of robbery but taken precautions can make the possibility less likely.
