Trying to remove ads from your lens?

At Squidoo we work hard to help monetize lenses and boost revenues in donations. These ad partners support Squidoo by helping us pay our bills, keep the site free for you to use, generate larger tier profits, and send more to charity.

While we've found some successful ad partners, we understand not every lensmaster is crazy about banner ads. Learn how each ad displays and how to opt out.

What do the ads look like?

Infolinks Ads

InfoLinks are the green underlined ads that appear in your lens content. The money generated by these ads goes into a general pool and is paid out based on the same tiers as the AdSense pool is. If you opt out of InfoLinks ads, your lens won't receive a portion of that pool, regardless of how it ranks.

To opt out, simply edit your lens, click Lens Settings in the right column and click "opt out of text link ads."

Display Ads

Display ads are the picture ads you see at the top of the lens and in the right column of your lens. The money generated by these ads goes into a general pool and is paid out based on the same tiers as the AdSense pool is. If you opt out of banners ads, your lens won't receive a portion of that pool, regardless of how it ranks. In order to opt out of banner ads, you MUST set your lens royalties to charity.

To opt out, there are two steps:
1. Edit your lens, and set the royalties to go to a charity of your choice.
2. Click Lens Settings in the right column and click "opt out of display banner ads."

Chitika Ads

A new kind of text ad is Chitika ads. Chitika ads will ONLY show to search traffic, which means people who land on your lenses via search engines like Google or Bing or Yahoo. Chitika looks at the search keyword that someone typed in to Google, the search that brought him to your lens. Then they match relevant ads to that keyword and display a text list of recommended offers which we will place in the sidebars. As such, Chitika ads match surfer intent instead of the page content. They're supposed to work really well with search traffic, which is great for us, since Squidoo gets massive amounts of search traffic every day.

Here's a scenario they described to us:

* A person searches for "Big Bird" and lands on a page about Sesame Street.
* Google Adsense will show an ad based on Sesame Street (the content)
* Chitika will show an ad based on Big Bird (the search term). If they have an ad for Big Bird, that is. If they don't know the intent or can't match, they don't display anything.

Chitika text ads will show to searchers as a "'Keyword' Offers for you" ad spot low down in the sidebar of lenses. 50% of the revenue from these ads goes into an ad pool reserved only for lensmasters who have these ads turned on.

Google Ads

Google AdSense ads display based on lens content and keywords. These ads cannot be opted out of. Money earned from these ads goes into our lensmaster pool and is paid out in tiers.

Which ads can I opt out of?

Manage ads in your Lens Settings menu

In your workshop, the Lens Setting menu hosts ad opt-in/opt-out options.

Infolinks, Chitika, and display/banner ads can be opted out of. Google Ads cannot be opted out of.

Important!

If you choose to opt out...

Please note that if you opt out of display ads, your lens earnings must be set to go to a charity. Why? Ad revenue is paid from a pool to lenses that perform well. It's only fair that if your lens isn't contributing to ad revenue, pool payments go to a deserving non-profit.

How can I remove Google Ads?

Google Ads cannot be removed from lenses. If you're finding ads that conflict with your topic, you can try adjusting your tags to get better results.

And if you find a rare Google Ad that's REALLY out of line - ie., it promotes porn - you can send a copy of the destination URL or a screenshot to squidspam@squidoo.com.

Bonus!

Use the Amazon Spotlight widget to create your own sidebar ads.

Ew! I found an icky ad!

We hate annoying or TOS breaking ads as much as you do. Here's what we need to provide to our ad suppliers so they can remove them:

1. screenshots of the offending ads
2. links that the ads go to (right click on the ad and select "copy link location")

Without these, we're unable to have them removed. (Unfortunately, lenses the ads display on don't help. They are randomized and may never display on that lens again.) Once we receive that info at squidhelp@squidoo.com, we can take a look.
