Adaptogens are a rare class of plant first identified by Russian scientists. Russian scientist N.V. Lazarev first applied the word adaptogen to these plants in 1947.
In order to be classed as an adaptogen:
1. It must cause only minimal disorders in the body's physiological functions
2. Must increase body's resistance to adverse influences.
3. Must have an overall normalizing effect, improving all kinds of conditions and aggravating none.
Noting that if adaptogens were really non-toxic, protective and recovery-enhancing, they should be able to improve athletic performance. Thus in the mid-1950s, the Russian government commissioned its Academy of Sciences to create a product to enhance human performance. Since then many studies have been performed.
