A Day In The Life of Beatles Epicness

The Ever Evolving Beatles Did it Again!

Picked as Rolling Stone as the best Beatles song (and a personal favorite of mine), A Day In The Life features The Beatles at the peak of their creativity. Two different songs wonderfully merged together by an orchestral crescendo reprised at the ending, which also includes an ethereal musical segment led by Lennon's vocals. Overall, it's a magical song that gives the Sgt Pepper's album a plus applying for excellency.

Masterpiece Songwriting

It was the beginning of 1967...

After recording Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane, the Abbey Road studios were bursting with innovative ideas. As stated above, this song derived from two separate pieces, one by Lennon and the other by McCartney. They left a 24-bar space in the middle, not knowing at the time what to fill it with. Anyway, they were immerse in an avant garde atmosphere and they knew somehow something big was about to unfold.

The main part belongs to John, who was allegedly inspired by a report in the Daily Mail about an accident suffered by their friend Tara Browne. Lennon stated "I didn't copy the accident. Tara didn't blow his mind out, but it was in my mind when I was writing that verse. The details of the accident in the song-not noticing traffic lights and a crowd forming at the scene-were similarly part of the fiction." There's also the line at the end about potholes in Blackburn, only a genius like Lennon would write about them filling the Albert Hall! Actually it was his friend Terry Doran who came out with the elusive verb that would link those two apparently incompatible thoughts.

On the other hand, Paul McCartney's contribution was a short piano piece he couldn't use for anything, which told about his times in Liverpool as a lad, when he would ride a bus, in seconds flat. His line "found my way upstairs and had a smoke / somebody spoke and I went into a dream" along with "I'd love to turn you on" resulted in the song being banned by the BBC. Even though Lennon and McCartney denied any drug references, Paul admitted lately that it was a deliberate provocation. He explained though that they wanted to turn people on to the truth rather than any drug.

Let's Get a 90-piece Orchestra!

After the basic track was mixed, The Beatles faced an empty 24-bar segment. McCartney came up with the extravagant idea of an orchestra of 90 musicians to fill in the gap, another example of how they were constantly pushing the boundaries of rock and making history by the record. Even though they had to cope with a 40-piece combo, it resulted in a total cost of £367 for the players, a good deal of money at the time.

Did You Know?

The Total recording time for "A Day In The Life" was 34 hours. Their entire first album (Please Please Me) was recorded in 10 hours.

Turn Me On Dead Man

Many absurd things have been said about McCartney dying in the 60's, one of them being that this song refers to Paul's death in a car crash. The web is full of info on it if you want to go that way, but I've seen McCartney in concert and he looked pretty alive to me. Here is a 2009 funny interview with David Letterman where he chats about the Paul is Dead Rumor.

"A Day In the Life" Lyrics

(Lennon/McCartney)

I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph

He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.

I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
but I just had to look
Having read the book
I'd love to turn you on

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in second flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I'd love to turn you on
