Add a Blog to Your Business Website

A company blog can engage readers, boost your SEO, and enhance your reputation.

Target does it. Home Depot does it. Heck, even Martha Stewart does it—and it helped these companies become a valued part of many of their consumers' lives.

I'm talking, of course, about keeping a company blog. (I know—you were hoping for something a little more exciting.)

Adding a blog to your business's website can be a more multifaceted marketing tool than you might realize at first.

With everyone and their uncle starting a company blog, it might seem like entering the field would require so much of your time that it's hardly worth trying—but with as little as an hour or two a week, any small business owner can find the time to post (or even hire a contract writer to come up with them, provided you find a top-quality writer).

Here are a few reasons that you should consider when deciding whether to add a blog to your company website:

Customers appreciate a good resource.

Cheers to your company blog! Image by vmiramontes; some rights reserved. There's a lot of, shall we say, subpar content out there. A lot of it smacks suspiciously of keyword-seeding; some of it is hardly decipherable. I once spent 20 minutes searching for a solid resource on houseplant care before getting frustrated with the results and giving up. (Don't worry—through a little bit of trial and error, the little guy is doing just fine.)

When you consistently provide insightful, noteworthy content that doesn't insult the intelligence of its readers with its doublespeak, your readers will take notice, and they'll be cheers-ing to your business all over town.

A steady flow of content keeps search engines interested.

Don't lose Google's interest. Cropped from original by Matt S; some rights reserved. If your website never changes, Google starts dropping your pagerank—which means, of course, less organic traffic. Don't let this happen to your business.

A company blog is the perfect solution: you don't feel like you have to constantly meddle with your professional website copy or change things arbitrarily, and Google recognizes the periodic posts and can see that you're still relevant.

Customers appreciate a chance to interact.

Give your customers a chance to talk! [Image by MML; some rights reserved.]Website copy is top-down: you describe your business, its services, and its products; your customers listen. With a blog, your customers have a chance to interact with you on a whole new level—they have their own voice. They're able to comment on your articles, give their thoughts, and most importantly, give you valuable (and brutally honest!) feedback on how you're doing.

A blog makes it simple to target specific keywords.

Targeting keywords is a breeze! [Image by Maria Reyes-McDavis; some rights reserved.]If you'd like to try targeting a few new keywords, but you don't want to rearrange all your website copy to do it, a blog gives you the perfect opportunity to produce new content periodically.

Want to try out a new keyword? Write a blog post about it! By posting focused articles build around your keywords, you're able to include them in your writing naturally without sounding like a machine—something everyone can appreciate.

Helpful info! I had a blog on one of my websites that I kept up for many years. Finally, due to time constraints, I had to let it go. And I did notice a drop in my search engine rankings.
