This lens is a how to, especially for Wikia users, on how to add a Squidoo lens about their wiki. I'm sure others will find it useful too!

How to make a lens for your Wikia site

  1. Start from the Wiki Group page to make sure your new lens automatically becomes a member of the group.
  2. Follow the Make a new lens link.
  3. Title & Tag Your Lens

Choose a good URL for your lens. For example, if your wiki is on Poker, see if squidoo.com/poker is free. If it isn't, choose poker-wiki as the name instead. (Hyphens are better than underscores or spaces here)
  4. The next choice is the name of your lens. This can be something simple such as "Poker Wiki" or something much longer such as "The world's best encyclopedia for poker fans".
  5. Next, pick a category from the drop down list. This can be changed later, so don't worry if you're not sure of the right one.
  6. Then, add some tags. Make sure you add "wiki" and "wikia", and then whatever fits your lens. You can also say which tags best fits. If your lens is on the poker wiki, perhaps "poker" would be the best fit.
  7. More About You

The next page is for your own bio. You can just use the default one and choose to continue.
  8. Then there's a captcha to make sure you're human
  9. Almost there... just choose "custom lens" when it gives you a selection of templates.
  10. Now you can choose which modules you want in your lens. The basic lens I'd recommend is a poll (to get people involved), an RSS feed (for up to date content from your wiki) and a link list (for the most useful 5 pages on your wiki).

You should be in The Module Picker now. Go to the "basic" tab and select Quickpoll, RSS, The Link List. Click save.
  11. Add an intro. Click the edit button next to the introduction header and type a sentence or two about your wiki. Look at your wiki's home page for ideas about how to quickly describe the wiki. Add a link to the wiki in that intro.
  12. If your wiki has a logo, you may want to upload that. Get it from http://YOUR-WIKI-NAME.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Wiki.png and save it to your computer so you can upload it to Squidoo.
  13. The next section is your poll. Just make up a simple question that relates to the topic of your wiki. The question could be a trivia question where readers will need to visit the wiki to check the correct answer.
  14. Now you need to add an RSS feed. The one for new pages on your wiki is best. Add this link (fill in the correct wiki name in place of poker):
    http://poker.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:Newpages&feed=rss

Choose 10 headlines, with no excerpt, updated every hour, with no HTML. Click Save!
  15. Finally, the Link List. Find two to ten pages from your wiki to link to.

Give the module a title like "Poker Wiki Links".

Add a link, title, and description, and then click "add another link". Repeat until finished and click save.
  16. You've basically finished, but you can choose to do more to your lens if you want, such as adding extra modules or rearranging the ones you have.
  17. Click "publish" and you're done. You now have a Squidoo lens for your wiki and you'll soon be a member of the wiki group.
  18. If you want to add some links to other Wikia lenses, visit this link and select your new lens to add Wikia's lens to your lensroll. All lenses have a "lensroll" link which you can click to add a link to that lens from any one of yours.
  19. If you want to add more pages to your link list later on, bookmark this link:
    javascript:location.href='http://www.squidoo.com/lensmaster/bookmark?'+encodeURIComponent(location.href);

Clicking it will let you add a link to whatever page you're currently on at the end of any module on any lens.
