Addiction to anything, be it alcohol, drugs, sex, debt, food etc. can be a painful and debilitating experience for both the addict and those around him or her. This lens is designed to take a little of the mystery and confusion out of taking the necessary steps to getting help for you or your loved one.
12 Step Programs
"The Twelve-step program is a set of guiding principles for recovery from addictive, compulsive, or behavioural problems, originally developed by the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous (abbreviated A.A.) to guide recovery from alcoholism. The twelve steps were first laid out in the so called "Big Book" entitled Alcoholics Anonymous, and the method has been incorporated into twelve-step programs by many other groups, such as Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, and Codependents Anonymous. Working the twelve steps involves:
- admitting that one has a serious,uncontrollable problem;
- recognizing that a higher (spiritual) power can help;
- inventorying and admitting character defects;
- asking one's higher power for deliverance from these defects;
- making amends to those one has harmed; and
- helping others with the same problem.
Following is a list of some of the more popular 12-Step programs. Please keep in mind that certain addictions fall under a larger umbrella (i.e. Heroin addicts can receive support from Narcotics Anonymous).
- Alcoholics Anonymous
- Alcoholics Anonymous® is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.
- Co-Dependents Anonymous
- Co-Dependents Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women whose common purpose is to develop healthy relationships. The only requirement for membership is a desire for healthy and loving relationships.
- Cocaine Anonymous
- The members of Cocaine Anonymous seek to help others to recover from their addiction. We use the 12 Step Recovery program, and welcome any person who desires to stop using cocaine and any other mind-altering substance.
- Crystal Meth Anonymous
- Crystal Meth Anonymous is a 12 step fellowship for those in recovery from addiction to crystal meth. There are no dues or fees for membership. Membership in CMA is open to anyone with a desire to stop using drugs.
- Debtors Anonymous
- Debtors Anonymous is a twelve step fellowship for debtors trying to recover from money problems and compulsive debt
- Sexaholics Anonymous
- Sexaholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop lusting and become sexually sober.
- Narcotics Anonymous
- Narcotics Anonymous is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. NA's focus is on keeping it's members clean and sober and is not interested in what or how much you used, but rather in helping its members in conquering their addictions.
- Overeaters Anonymous
- Overeaters Anonymous offers a program of recovery from compulsive overeating using the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of OA. Worldwide meetings and other tools provide a fellowship of experience, strength and hope where members respect one another's anonymity. OA charges no dues or fees; it is self-supporting through member contributions.
Unlike other organizations, OA is not just about weight loss, obesity or diets; it addresses physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. It is not a religious organization and does not promote any particular diet. To address weight loss, OA encourages members to develop a food plan with a health care professional and a sponsor. If you want to stop your compulsive eating, welcome to Overeaters Anonymous. - Sex Addicts Anonymous
- Sex Addicts Anonymous a 12-step organization helping men and women share their experience, strength and hope with each other so they may overcome their sexual addiction and recover from sexual addiction.
- Al-Anon and Alateen
- For over 50 years, Al-Anon (which includes Alateen for younger members) has been offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics as it is estimated that each alcoholic affects the lives of at least four other people.
- Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous
- Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous is a Twelve Step - Twelve Tradition oriented fellowship based on the model pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. One of the resources we draw on is our willingness to stop acting out in our own personal bottom line addictive behavior on a daily basis.

Share Your Experience
One of the most helpful things in recovery is hearing the experiences of other people in recovery. If you have an experience that you would like to share (anonymously, of course) please do as you never know whose life it may impact.

Excellent information about addictions and treatment approaches. Thanks for sharing it. Over the years I have developed a generic approach to addiction treatment. Please feel free to see how I try to help others in new ways. Sincerely: Gary Eby, author and therapist. Posted September 29, 2008 |

Always more to learn! Thanks for sharing! :-) Posted September 02, 2008 |
An addiction is bad enough, but what is worse is that the addiction can drastically interfere with the normal working of an individual. A person does not realize this while he or she is getting addicted, but soon enough the addiction will begin taking toll on the work.
