Adding Interest to a Space with Texture

Ranked #69,170 in Home & Garden, #1,088,017 overall

If you lived in a house that was covered in white including your floor, walls, ceilings and furniture, you would soon go a little bit crazy. You would begin to suffer from a lack of sensual stimuli. Without it you cannot tell if you are real or not, and that is why decorating a room with smells, textures and colors is so pleasing, or actually necessary, for humans in general.

One of the things that adds interest to our space is texture. Thee are two types of texture that you can manipulate in your space, and they are visual and tactile. When you see a leopard print on a throw pillow, that is visual texture. Drape a rich chenille throw over the back of a couch, which is soft and luxurious to the touch, and you've added tactile texture. By manipulating texture in your space, you can create a rich and stimulating space that will give you all of the sensual stimuli that you need.
Step 1 - Decide on the effect that you want your room to have on you. It can be soothing, energizing or even creative.

Step 2 - Begin work with the ceiling. To get your ceiling to look lower, use a dark color on it. So if you have a vacuous space that you want to make feel more intimate, you may want to paint your ceiling a darker shade than your wall color. Immediately your room will feel more inviting and warmer. By the same token, if your ceiling is already too low, painting it a lighter color than the walls will make it move up and away opening up your space visually and making it feel lighter an more open.

Step 3 - Next do the walls. Perhaps you will want to create a focal wall. To do this you can paint one wall in your space a darker color than the rest of the room. Then mount a single painting on the wall framed in a heavily lacquered frame for a modern space.

Step 4 - Now, address the flooring. There are so many choices for floor coverings that you can use these days. You can use traditional materials like stone, marble, wood laminate, wood, brick or tile. Just in the tiles you have a huge number of other choices including ceramic, vinyl, laminate, metal, glass, wood and even granite. You may want to use metal or glass to complement a contemporary dor, and you may want to round out the texture a little by adding a textured rug like a shag, sisal, sea grass or bamboo rug to add even more interest to your space. Not only do these options add interest to your space, but many of them are sustainable choices as well.

Step 5 - More on the decor. Leather adds warmth to a room, and it is a durable and practical furniture covering. You may also want to add some wicker to your room for additional texture.

Step 6 - Then dress the windows. You can add heavy, textured draperies to your windows, or you may choose light sheer window coverings to let in lots of light. Simple blinds can also be a great choice if you need a simple window treatment.

Step 7 - Finally it is time for accessories. This is where you add your personality to a room. Add your favorite touches to a room. Express your modern sensibility with modern wall art metal or an abstract wall hanging.
