Your Home's Color Scheme

When you think of redesigning your home, the first thing that comes to mind is color. A change in color adds an instant boost to any room, even if you don't change anything else.

But there are rules to follow when it comes to choosing and maintaining a color scheme. The first, and often the most important, is consistency.

Consistency doesn't mean sticking to one color or shade-in fact, that's a surefire way to zap the life out of your room. There are ways to add variety and interest while keeping your color scheme consistent. Here are some quick tricks you may want to try.

Neutral colors

If you're not sure what color to choose, star with something neutral or earth-toned. These colors work well with practically any combination, so you can just throw colors in as you please. Some of the best neutral colors are white, black, beige, and brown. Gray is also considered neutral, but it doesn't work with some of the darker shades. Avoid combining two neutral colors as your theme; this can make your room look dull and uninviting.

Varying Shades

A monochromatic theme might work if your room is small or well-lighted.

Monochromatic means using different shades of one color, such as pastel pink and fuchsia, sea green and forest green. This trick allows you to surround yourself with your favorite color without going overboard. To get the best effect, choose a duller shade as your base and throw in accessories in metallic or neon variants. Distribute light and dark shades evenly to better bring out the contrast.

Complementary Colors

It is possible to have too much of one color in a room. Don't saturate your space with just one hue. Instead, add splashes of a complementary color to break the monotony.

Try using cool green area rugs to brighten up a wooden or earth-themed room.

If you chose a pastel color, consider dark brown or black for your furniture.

Other good combinations include yellow and purple, pink and brown, and green and rose.

Plains and Prints

You can't build a décor theme on color alone.

Often, you also need some texture to bring life to your chosen colors. The best way to add texture is by combining solid colors with patterned pieces. You can use a complementary hue or a different shade of your dominant color. Fancy oriental area rugs will look great on plain hardwood floors. Earth-toned pieces such as brown area rugs and beige area rugs take very well to patterns and work with most home décor themes.

Colored Fabrics

If you want a more subtle look, try keeping your color to the room fabrics. Choose a base color such as white or beige, and get room fabrics in a lively shade.

Red area rugs and curtains work well with minimalist and postmodern design themes.

Zen-inspired rooms are more about natural surroundings, so wool or seagrass area rugs may be more appropriate.

Pair bamboo area rugs with bamboo blinds to create an Asian-inspired room.
