Addthis Button - Social Bookmarking, Backlinks and Sharing
I'm on lots of blogs, bookmarking sites, article sites and other places to promote pages, build backlinks and spread the word.
Eventually I stumbledupon a tool which would make submitting sites to other sites easier, and by placing it on my pages, I could let others submit pages for me.
Ta-da! - The addthis button. This little button, placed on a page, allows users to access 48 social sites, blogs, news sites and forums, and submit them so others can find them and drive traffic to the page.
I like this little tool so much that I wanted to digg up some details for people so they can start using the easy-to-set-up, easy-to-use addthis button.

Addthis Button - Getting Started
When you go to create an addthis button, the page allows you to select a button that will match up to the site it's being placed on including Blogger, MySpace, Wordpress, Typepad, Tumblr and general applications like websites and emailed newsletters.
For Squidoo lenses, simply use the Website setting, which allows you to use any of the buttons for bookmarking or RSS feeds.

When you select an application, the radio and textboxes will change to allow you different button options, and to enter your MySpace username, for example.

You can even create addthis buttons for RSS Feeds by clicking the RSS Feed Button tab beside the Bookmarking and Sharing Buttons tab.

Once you have the button the way you want it, you can also select whether you want the button to keep track of user data. Select yes or no for analytics (which requires registration, you can log in to see your traffic data), and then click the Get the Code button at the bottom.
Addthis will generate the code necessary to create the addthis button for you. All you have to do is copy it and paste it into your website or other site's code. When I place it in this text module, you see the button below.

Again, for Squidoo lenses, use the Website setting so that you can use any of the buttons.

Clicking the Addthis Button - What Happens?
Regardless of the layout of the button, or whether you use analytics or not, the key use for the button is users clicking it and submitting your page to any of 48 sites. When they click the button, a window opens showing all of the bookmarking sites available to the button.
When a site logo is clicked, the addthis button connects the user to the site in question, where the user can log in, bookmark the site, write about it or otherwise submit your page to the site.
This allows multiple users to submit your page to whichever sites they use, and covers a wider array of bookmarking sites than you would if you did it yourself (unless you are just a tireless promoter).
The great thing about having human users submit sites for you like this is that they will put their own spin on the information on your pages, add them to their lists of bookmarks and favorites, email them to friends and more. The actual interaction with your pages is greater than simply adding a blurb and a backlink to a site. User interaction will spread your page beyond the bookmarking sites, develop interest and drive more traffic to your pages.
