I wanted to keep the cost of the project as cheap as possible so at first I tried using some of the free Adirondack chair plans that are scattered throughout the internet. I kept running into the same problem with these free plans though and that is they weren't very detailed and just told me basic information. They didn't tell me what tools I will need, the recommended type of lumber, the best sealants to stand up to the weather, etc.

Professional adirondack chair building plans have a comprehensive list of the materials you'll be using and a step-by-step instruction along with it. This way you'll be able to anticipate the cost as well as the tools you'll be needing. Given that I was able to build my own chair using a very workable plan, I strongly suggest that you do the same. It would save you some trouble and headaches.

Adirondack Chair History

The legendary Adirondack chair (a.k.a. the Westport Plank Chair) appeared on the scene in 1903 in the Adirondack mountains of New York. The design is attributed to Thomas Lee and it has become the epitome of northeast American rustic. Mr. Lee wanted a distinctive style of chair for his summer home in NY, so he developed several prototypes and asked his family to critique his creations. For all his models, he cut eleven panels from a single piece of wood and included the oversized armrests, which is one of the significant features of the Adirondack chair. Lee's chairs include a straight back and seat, slanted to improve sitting on the steep mountain inclines common to the mountainous Adirondack area.

After choosing his final pattern, Lee invited a friend and hunting buddy, Harry Bunnell, to use his plans and build chairs over the winter to supplement his off-season income. "Friend" Harry, thought that Mr. Lee's chair design would be popular with Westport's summer crowd and without Lee's knowledge, filed "his" invention with the U.S. Patent Office. He received approval for his patent in 1905 and for twenty years Bunnell manufactured his "Westport plank chair" offering two colors of brown or green.

The Adirondack chair is an essential piece of American garden furniture whose style has been incorporated into other furniture pieces such as love seats and chaise lounges. Adirondack chairs today can be replicas of Lee's straight back chair or have curved backs and contoured seats constructed from everything from teak to recycled plastic.
