Adirondack Furniture is Classic American Wooden Furniture

When it comes to classic American furniture, there may not be a better example of pioneering ingenuity along with aesthetic practicality than the beautiful wood and stone structures of the Adirondack architectural style. The Adirondack style is named after the Adirondack mountains of upstate New York, where it first gained popularity during the late 1800's. Adirondack furniture quickly spread to other mountainous regions, including Colorado, California, and the Pacific northwest.

Adirondack Furniture Has Swiss Inspiration

William W. Durant was the creator of the Adirondack, or Great Camp style. While Durant was studying in Europe, the he became attracted to the rugged design of the Swiss Alps mountain lodges. Upon returning to the United States, Durant soon realized that the combination of alpine styling with sturdy stone-and-log frontier construction would be perfect for lodging, especially for wealthy New Yorkers on holiday seeking a back-to-nature experience.

The Adirondack style was characterized by natural stone foundations, fitted log construction, and large vaulted roofs, so these structures were environmentally attractive, as well as structurally able to withstand the harshest mountain conditions. Due in part to Franklin D. Roosevelt, who often visited the Adirondacks, and whose fondness for the rustic style of these buildings was no secret, Great Camp architecture became the model for national park and ski lodges across the United States. One of the most famous is The Inn at Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park.

Wood

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

I prefer wood. Its heavier and doesn't end up blowing all over the yard.

Recycled Plastic

funwithtrains says:

Although the wood is beautiful, I like the durability of the recycled plastic, and recycling is good!
