It's hard to believe that just 25 years ago, most people couldn't print out documents from their personal computers -- in fact, hardly anyone owned a personal computer.

Printing was done with special-purpose typesetters, and basic machines cost $150,000. Much of the final production work was done manually, with people sitting over light tables, physically assembling pieces of film.

Adobe Pagemaker

PageMaker was the first desktop publishing program, introduced in 1985 by Aldus Corporation, initially for the Apple Macintosh but soon after also for the PC. It relies on Adobe Systems' PostScript page description language. In 1994 Aldus and PageMaker were acquired by Adobe Systems. The current version is PageMaker 7.0, released July 9, 2001, though updates have been released for the two supported platforms since. PageMaker was awarded a SPA Excellence in Software Award for Best New Use of a Computer in 1986.

Adobe InDesign

Launched as a direct competitor to QuarkXPress, it initially had difficulty in converting users. In 2002 it was first to release a Mac OS X-native version. Also, InDesign CS and CS2 were bundled with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat in the Creative Suite. InDesign can export documents in Adobe's Portable Document Format and offers multilingual support that Quark users can get only by purchasing a much more expensive "Passport" version. InDesign was the first major DTP application to support Unicode for text processing, advanced typography of OpenType fonts, advanced transparency features, layout styles, and optical margin alignment. The cross-platform scriptability using Javascript still sets it apart. Finally, it features tight integration and user interface.

Adobe GoLive

Adobe GoLive is an HTML editor from Adobe Systems. It replaced Adobe PageMill as Adobe's primary HTML editor[1]. The latest version has been given the "CS2" moniker, indicating its integration with the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite.

Adobe GoLive originated as CyberStudio, the flagship product of a company named GoLive Systems, Inc.. Perceived in the industry as the Photoshop of HTML editors, Adobe purchased GoLive in 1999 and re-branded the GoLive CyberStudio product to what is now Adobe GoLive.

Adobe has officialy confirmed that CS2.3 will contain both GoLive CS2 and Dreamweaver 8. While future versions of Creative Suite will integrate Dreamweaver as a replacement for GoLive, the latter will continue to develop as a standalone product.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop, or simply Photoshop, is a graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Systems. It is the current market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation, and, in addition to Adobe Acrobat, is one of the best-known pieces of software produced by Adobe Systems. It is considered the industry standard in most jobs related to the use of visual elements. Photoshop is available for Mac OS, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows; versions up to Photoshop 9.0 can also be used with other operating systems such as Linux using software such as CrossOver Office. Past versions of the program were ported to the SGI IRIX and Sun Solaris platforms, but official support for this port was dropped after version 3.

Adobe Premiere

Adobe Premiere Pro is a real-time, timeline based video editing software application. It is part of the Adobe Production Studio, a suite of digital video and audio applications. Premiere Pro has many hardware and software partners, and is often included as an OEM package with video editing cards, such as the Matrox RT.X2.

Premiere Pro is a rewritten version of Adobe Premiere, and was launched in 2003. Though its predecessor, Premiere, was available for the Macintosh, Premiere Pro does not support Mac OS due to the engineering costs of cross-platform development, and multiple competing products on Mac OS. Since its rewrite, Premiere Pro is growing in acceptance by the film and video industry, and has been used in such movies as Dust To Glory by Dana Brown, and Superman Returns, and other venues such as Madonna's Confessions Tour.

Adobe LiveMotion

Adobe LiveMotion was a product created by Adobe Systems released in 2000 and perceived as a direct competitor to Macromedia Flash. It replaced the discontinued Adobe ImageStyler program, which Adobe had sold from 1998 to 2000.

LiveMotion was created as a tool for the creation of interactive animated graphics. It was able to export to a variety of formats, including QuickTime and Macromedia Flash. LiveMotion has an interface and motion timeline similar to After Effects and had the ability to share files across using the Adobe exchange file format.

Adobe released LiveMotion and LiveMotion 2.0 before discontinuing development November 15, 2003 because of poor sales due to fierce competition from its rival. Ironically, in early 2005, Adobe and Macromedia announced that they would merge, which would likely have resulted in the LiveMotion project being scrapped anyway.
