Adobe - a world of creative software

Adobe is a software company that specializes in programs for creative users. The best known product is probably Photoshop, but there is more great stuff coming from that company.

Some of the main products from Adobe is:

* Photoshop - photo and image editing
* Illustrator - drawing
* Indesign - layout
* Lightroom - Photo album and developing, great for RAW files
* Acrobat - documentformat for independent sharing of documents

Apart from the professional applications mentioned here, Adobe also releases a series of low prized programs for the home user. This series is known as "Elements", like Photoshop Elements, for instance.

Adobe releases new versions almost every 18 months (give and take a few). The current version is called CS4. CS is short for Creative Suite. Although you can buy the applications independantly, buying a suite is often recommended. A suite of more than 5 programs cost no more than 2 of the programs individually.

If you are not familiar with Adobe's suite of applications, you can often find trial versions on Adobes website

What is Photoshop

the master in manipulating and editing photographs

Photoshop has a large palette of great tools to manipulate, and edit photographs.

In photoshop you can crop, rotate, change colors, contrast lightning, add effects and convert between numerous formats from high resolution TIFF to optimized JPEGs for your web site (Squidoo included).

The apple flower shown here on the right is manipulated in Photoshop, the background has been removed, and a single flower was isolated.

Most important is the way you work with pictures in Photoshop. You have the opportunity to work with effect and editing layers. By using the layers you can change the order effects are applied, and you can easily change the amount of effects and remove a change to a photograph, without destroying the original. That is a big time saver!

What is Indesign

now you're layouting with power

Large or small, books, poster, ads, ebooks or brocures. Full color or black/white. Anything can be layouted with Indesign. Even webpages can be generated from Indesign documents.

Until recently Quark Express (the competitor) was considered the only option for professional layout. With the introduction of Indesign that changed radically. An earlier version of Indesign (called CS2) was known as the "Best Quark Ever", because they borrowed a lot of cool features from Quark, and made them work. Quark is impressive, but poorly programmed and cumbersome to work with. Indesign has it quirks, too, but is much more efficient on a daily basis.

Do not miss this website! Lots of tips and help for new and skilled users. Check out: Indesign SECRETS.

What is Illustrator

3, 2, 1, DRAW!

Illustrator is the mother of all drawing applications.

With Illustrator you are in control of every single line in your drawing. But, there is a price. Illustrator is a bit difficult to use. Once you get the hang of it, you'll grow with it, and eventually never want to do without.

Text effects, logo design, covers for books, cd's and other things are often done with Illustrator.

Illustrator is a so-called vector drawing program. That means you are drawing individual object, much like drawing with a pencil. Vector drawing is a quite different from bitmap drawing, like you can do in Photoshop.

One of the greatest possibilities in Illustrator is manipulation text. Characters can be changed to outlines, and then manipulated just like any other drawing.

What is Lightroom

Much more than a darkroom

In ancient times theres was film. Cameras put light on to a light sensitive film, which was in turn developed to reveal the image. Yeah, it sounds crazy, but thats how it worked back then :-)

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is not at all Photoshop (the name is just for marketing purposes). Lightroom gives the digital photographer all the advantages that analog photograhers had, and then some!

In Lightroom you can load, tag and rate your own photographs. A lot of fixes and improvements to photos, for instance saturation, contrast or specks of lens dirt, is easily done in Lightroom.

You can export your images with whatever specs you need, and in any desired resolution. For a quick view of a photo session, you can make a slideshow or contact print.

The real power is in handling RAW files, the "negative" of your digital camera. You can change a lot of settings before you "develop" your image and saves it as an JPEG file. Hence, you can do changes without destroying the original file.

You can get lots of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom power tips and tricks from this blog.

What is Acrobat

more than a reader

The Acrobat format (PDF = Portable Document Format) is probably known to anybody surfing the Internet. PDF is great because it handles complex layout and represents it almost identical on all media, screen, paper, video etc.

Almost everybody has the free Acrobat Reader. This is great for viewing PDF documents. However, the Pro version does a lot more. For instance you can protect your documents, and directly edit, crop or extract pages.

If you work with prepress, you will never want to live without Acrobat Pro.

Acrobat files are often used as a basis for electronic books (like you download on Lulu.com for instance). We can have links to webpages, internal hyperlinks, forms to fill out, and even integrated video in PDF documents.
