I always adopt from local shelters-and I prefer the older ones. They always have worked out just fine. My last 2 were 8 and 11. The older girl passed away in 2 years but I think we gave her the best years of her life-she'd been neglected and was in bad shape - what a sweet girl. It's like they know you saved them and they show you their appreciation every day.

I wholeheartedly believe in adopting a dog from an animal shelter rather than purchasing one. Some of the greatest dogs in the world come from animal shelters!

If you want a particular breed there are rescue organizations dedicated to many breeds so you can rescue and still suit your fancy!

Unfortunately both of my dogs came pet stores. They are older now and I learned since adopting them that future additions to our family will be through shelters.

Well done lens and blessed by a Squid Angel today.

We'll start to look for a shelter dog in about 4 months when we move to a house with garden .... It will be awesome!
  • awelldressedbullet Sep 20, 2010 @ 3:34 pm | delete
Ten paws up Stephanie! Wonderful topic and spot on! Our doggies have always been rescues and wouldn't have it any other way. It does break my heart going into shelters though, I always want to bring them all home. I hope some day we won't need shelters or have unwanted furbabies! I have a few lenses I will lensroll this to! - Kathy

Great Lens. I love it. Spread the word about the importance of saving shelter dogs and cats. It is all our responsibility. We domesticated them, now we are responsible for their care.

Nice lens. As a kid, we always go our dogs from the shelter. Your doing a great service adopting a pet and taking care of the many dogs unloved. Five stars and a favorite.

We don't have a shelter in our area, but two out of our three dogs were rescues. The Rottweiler was given to us as a gift. I can't imagine life without my little mutts (see ugly dogs need love too lens) Especially my baby Roo, she is my constant companion. Sometimes I wonder about the people who abandoned her, if they only knew what an amazing dog she would turn out to be... or my kids dog Oi, she is the sweetest dog I've ever met, perfectly content to just love and be loved. She can also jump 5' straight up. Our dogs bring so much joy and laughter to our lives... it would be so dull and boring without them! I now know why pet lovers are supposed to live longer!

Great job, adopt a dog today and let them into your heart. It is so totally worth it!

Congratulations on the purple star. Dogs rock!
  • kristensup May 1, 2009 @ 3:22 pm | delete
This is by far my favorite lens on Squidoo. You are my hero. :)
I have two shelter dogs now, and I don't think I will ever be able to live life without a dog. And there's no way I'd get a dog anywhere other than a shelter. In fact, my ultimate life goal when I get out of college is to open a dog shelter/non-profit organization.

    But yeah, awesome/amazing/super/perfect/rad/great lens! :D

A very nice and informative lens. 5*
3 of my 4 pets are "secondhand" pets and they've all turned out alright.

A terrific lens! Dogs are wonderful companions and only ask for your love. Hopefully people will start to think before buying a puppy... then realizing it's too much work and dumping them.

The reason to posting this as a reply to Alethea is just to say to them that we visit family at the veremar every year in Estepona.

As for the topic, just to say what a worthwhile lens, we have a black labrador and the amount of love and fun he brings with him is immense - he is great with the kids and an all round lovely dog. As a child my father had dogs from the RAF, which for one reason or another didn't make the grade, I'm unsure of their plight if no one 'adopted' them but a very similar type of thing.

Absolutely wonderful lens. My heart is deeply saddened by the thought of the many animals that are put down in shelters each and every day. It is awesome when these animals are rescued and given the gift of a real home and family. Thanks for reminding us all to think about adopting from a shelter. :)
  • Alethea000 Mar 20, 2009 @ 4:39 am | delete
What a fantastic lens! We live right on the beach in Estepona and we found our dog there! She had been abandoned and we took her in. No chip, not spayed and she probably hadn't had her injections so we got that all done, plus an opeartion on her eyes as as she is a sharpei cross. Spain is one of the worst places in Europe for abandoned animals and as more people return to the UK from living in Spain there are more and more abandoned dogs every day. How irresponsible people are! Well done again and I really hope you get lots of support from your lens and maybe convince some people to adopt rather than supply the demand for puppy farms.
