Black Cats Need Adoptive Homes
Ranked #49 in Pets & Animals, #1,202 overall
Black cats - waiting for loving homes - waiting, because too few people will adopt black cats!
Black cats are wonderful feline companions. Black cats are sweet, loving, compassionate, and precious in every way. So why are so many of them overlooked at shelters when other cats with variations in color catch the eye and get adopted?
I'm making this lens to tell people -- black cats need love too! Don't be one of those who condemn black cats just because of the color of their fur. Prejudice against black cats is just as bad as prejudice against people of different countries and colors.
If you adopt a black shelter cat you will probably be surprised and pleased to learn that your new pet appreciates and loves you dearly.

Abandoned black kittens
...someone left them in a forested area at the end of my driveway.

Six Black Cats Art Print - Buy at AllPosters.com
Two weeks ago I rescued three kittens that had been abandoned at the end of my driveway. Two are black; one is black and white. They're about six weeks old and we can't keep them for several reasons mostly due to the economy and our living arrangements. At this time I can't make a 10-15 year commitment to a cat.
So last Saturday I packed the two black kittens into a box and took them to the farmers market at the local mercantile. I set the box near the front door in the shade, set my chair beside it, and put up a sign: "Abandoned Kittens Need Homes."
The first person to take an interest was a young man; his mother, however, took one look and said, "No, they're black. We'd rather have cats with interesting markings."
Sorry to say, that upset me. I needed to find homes for these fine and adorable felines and someone rejected them just because they were black. They are friendly, good natured, playful, and box trained. What more could you want? They're sweet as can be!

Next to the door of the mercantile there's a bulletin board where I saw a poster put up by an acquaintance who stated she had eight black cats -- all spayed and neutered -- and wanted people to adopt them so she could move. Obviously she cared enough to feed and neuter these cats, so she had nothing against black cats, but will people actually adopt them from her?

Later that morning another woman I know walked up and looked at the kittens I had with me and she nearly started crying. She said, "Those are some of mine," and was obviously traumatized.
She told me she's taking care of thirteen cats -- all black -- and they aren't spayed or neutered because she has no transportation. She's feeding them because nobody else wanted them.
We live in the boonies, 70 miles from the nearest spay/neuter clinic. She told me that when the local tribe (Native American tribe) had their spay/neuter clinics (2001, 2002, 2003) she took all her pets there because it was accessible. But they stopped doing that and she has no way to get her cats to Yreka, so apparently they've been producing lots of black kittens... and someone (not her) was taking them places and either killing or dumping them... and around here in the forest abandoning kittens is the same as killing them.
If I'd left the three I found in the woods, they probably would have become fox or mountain lion food. I felt I absolutely HAD to rescue them. And now I'm saddled with a problem that I didn't create because if they were my cats their parents would have been spayed or neutered.
I asked the woman if she wanted the kittens back and of course she didn't because she doesn't have resources to take care of them. Even feeding the thirteen black cats she's now got is too much for her.

Kitten Updates
July 26, 2009 - Three young adults came by and adopted the black and white kitten. So now we've got only the two black kittens, plus one I didn't tell you about before... Midnight, another black cat, about a year old, that lost one eye in a fight. We will probably keep him. I've named the two black kittens Shadow and Mischief. Mischief is heavier and has light green eyes like Midnight's. We believe Midnight could be a big brother to these two... he also came to us as a stray when he was in need of healing. Mischief is the more active kitten. Shadow has brown eyes and is very mellow most of the time.
October 12, 2010 - We've had Shadow and Mischief over a year now. They've been neutered - that helped quite a bit to calm them down. For a while they fought with each other constantly, but they're able to enjoy brotherly companionship again now. When they were younger Mischief was larger, but now he's thin and wiry (and very hyper) and his brother, Shadow, has surpassed him in weight. Shadow is more laid-back and mellow. When I take my black dog, Mairi, for a walk, both black cats like to follow along. At first they were afraid of Mairi, but now they know she doesn't want to hurt them and they try to get affection from her by rolling over onto their backs, exposing their tummies in front of her.
May 23, 2011 - Shadow and Mischief still live here and ... I cannot tell them apart! One is mellow, one is more mischievous. That's all I know. Bob can tell which is which. I can't. Now we've got a feral cat living under our house. He (or she?) is small, probably still a kitten, dark brindle colored (Bob says Calico but I don' think that's quite right.) We're going to have to trap it and get it neutered before something else happens. The new cat has no name, and hasn't warmed up to us at all, but Shadow and Mischief have been fairly hospitable and welcoming.
I've owned two black cats
...Aretha and Snookums

Black Persian Female by Jane Burton - Buy at AllPosters.com
In 1998 on my birthday my children and I went to the Antioch CA animal shelter just to look around, and I suddenly thought my birthday was the right day to adopt a cat. The children located a black cat with silky fur. What they loved about her was the way she squeeked.
I read the card on her cage. She was being called Spook and had been in that cage for six months! My heart was in my throat. Six months in a cage! Because she was black? It was enough to make me feel like crying. Needless to say I adopted her on that day just to get her out of there.
We took her home and I named her Aretha. She was extremely timid and was afraid to go outside. At first she spent a lot of time hiding in a bedroom closet. She'd come out to eat and use the cat box, but then would want to hide some more. She was so used to being in that cage that freedom frightened her. If I took her outside to the porch she'd panic, wiggle away, and dart back inside the house as quickly as could be.
We already had another cat -- Sabrina. Sabrina, or Sabi as we often called her, was white with dark markings on her head, tail and back. She was long haired and we thought she was gorgeous. Unfortunately Sabrina tended to be bad natured and would not be friendly to other cats.
When Aretha came out of her closet she tried to be friendly with Sabrina, but always was repulsed. Sabrina could be vicious about her unfriendliness. She loved her people but other cats were beneath her. We never got that kind of behavior from Aretha who was sweet and loving to all.
Both these cats have now crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

My son and Aretha
Our Aretha started staying away longer and longer. We went on vacation for a week one summer (we had a friend there feeding the cats) and a day after we returned she showed up in the yard on the pile of boulders downhill from our house. I stopped the car to get out to talk to her and she darted away. She stopped, turned around and looked at me with love, and then ran off. She wouldn't let me touch her.
My son saw her around that time too in the same area, and again, she wouldn't allow contact. I think she just wanted to say goodbye. We never saw her again.
A few weeks later it was apparent she'd left us. One late night my son and I were sitting in the front of the house and started talking about her, wondering if there was anything else we should do about her disappearance. All of a sudden we both heard a long sighing sound. I thought it came from the air in the center of the dining room and he thought it might have come from the floor, but we both heard it very clearly. It was eerie. We believe without a doubt our Aretha loved us enough for this one last farewell.

Step by Step - Buy at AllPosters.com
Our second black cat was supposed to be a foster cat but we loved him and were glad that the person who asked us to foster him never came back for him. We first saw him when a cat rescue person who lived in the hills east of our town brought him to us. We'd asked her to help us get one of our cats spayed and when she brought back our cat, she brought the half-grown black cat too. He'd also been spayed and had his ear clipped because it was expected that he'd be released back to the wild to be feral.
He could endure a little bit of hugging by my daughter, but usually wanted to hide when he first came into our house. Soon he warmed up to us and was the sweetest little cat one could ever want to be around. His aura was gentle and loving; his spirit was patience and compassion.
When he was very young my daughter cradled him in her arms one evening and said, "Awwww, Snookums..." and I said, "We should name him that." The name fit and it stuck. Later I wanted to name him something more dignified and suggested "King James" but my daughter insisted on keeping the name "Snookums".
He always wanted to stay outside most of the time when he got older. I used to stay up late to write and he'd almost always come to my window and ask to be let in at about 1am. Well, a couple weeks after this photo was taken -- Christmas 2004 -- I started missing him. He wasn't asking to come in anymore... and then I remembered a loud sound I'd heard in front of the house a few nights before. I realized a wild animal got him and I'd heard it and didn't know what I was listening to at the time. My heart ached for many months after that.
So how do you feel about black cats?
Do you love them or leave them?
I'm sure by now you realize how very much I loved my black cats. And because I had this loving relationship with two very precious black cats, it saddens me a great deal when people reject them as pets.

I'm not saying that cats with markings shouldn't be adopted. I know they need homes too. But if you're going to make a commitment to a cat for 10 to 15 years, why not get a companion black cat for your cat with markings?
We had five cats (all gone now) . . . two were black cats. One was Siamese... he never bonded with me. One was gray and white; and the fifth was Sabrina - her picture is on this lens - the furry white beautycat. I've valued all my cats... but my heart goes out to black cats who are not loved and who desperately need good homes.

No, I'd adopt a black cat; they are precious.
Rebecca Mead says:
Three of my six cats are black, and they are all absolutely wonderful kitties. I would never more discriminate against an animal b/c of the color of its fur than I would a human being for the color of his/her skin. I would adopt every unloved cat in the world if I could (and then move on to other animals), but I must admit, six is already too many to give them the attention they deserve. When the time comes in the future to help out more unloved and homeless kitties, I don't intend to start discriminating, but I love black cats!! They are sleek (even when furry), beautiful, and mysterious, and certainly not responsible for whatever baggage human beings attach to them, negative or positive.

Symone says:
As a child, my father and I looked after my uncle's black cat when he left town. He was the meanest thing and he clawed up all the furniture so I figure he either still had his daddy parts, missed his human or a combination of the two. He was the first cat to ever swipe at me, though I had cats before that.
But when my best friend took me out to the house of a friend of hers who was giving away kittens, it was a black one that I began to fall in love with in that living room where we viewed all of the babies. In the litter there were orange cats, black cats and one that was black with blonde and orange markings. My friend took that one. We came with our other roomate who took one black cat who was very shy and had been taken home and returned by another family, and an over friendly orange one. There was a cat who kept trying to get away. he tried first to escape under the tv stand, then under a clock and so on. This adventurous kitten was the only one who seemed more concerned with his surroundings than the new people that had gathered there. Right then I fell for this ball of fur. Milo and I will celebrate his first and my 20th year of life on this earth this August.
My experience with black cats is that they tend to be either very mellow as my roomate's black cat is or very curious/mischievous as mine is. With training they can turn out to be well behaved, though at times they may try and push their limits as children will. as long as they are spayed/neutered you should not have many problems with them and they can be cuddly or independent, but they tend not to be so needy as other cats.

While both my cats are white and marked I don't think it matters at all about colour in a dog or cat.
With rescue animals you really won't get to know them for some time. Try and get the most friendly well behaved pet that likes affection to begin with (if that is what you are looking for) and you will be a lucky pet owner!
In the long term looks don't matter, go for personality and temperament every time and you won't go wrong.

I always liked black cats better than any other markings, with colorpoint aka Siamese as second choice. my cat is a colorpoint longhair right now and I love him. But if I were looking for a second cat, he or she would be black.
I used to feel bad about preferring black cats, now that I know they have a harder time being adopted I'll seek them out. They are so beautiful, like little panthers. They are sweet, loving, playful, fun and awesome.
So I go against the crowd. I'd choose a black cat specifically for her markings as opposed to any other cat. But a good personality can trump looks.

I adopted two male kittens together, one black and one orange. Yes, we were all ready for Halloween! Our beloved black kitty went to "kitty heaven" in November after 14 wonderful years with our family, and we still miss him greatly. I could never have asked for a kinder, sweeter, more loving cat than my Felix. Of course I would adopt another black cat, it's the personality that matters!

I have been fortunate to become caretaker for quite a few black cats. They came to us as feral cats and we have taken care of them. Getting almost all of them fixed, so it can be controlled. The black cats are the most loving and the best friends you can have. In fact I have thought about doing a lens on my cats.

I love both cats, but Mojo is the sweeter & friendlier of the two. I wanted a black lap cat and that's exactly who he is! Felines, to me, are God's most beautiful animal creatures. The gorgeous black cats are off the charts...

I love black cats! They're actually my favorite color of cat. I have 5 of them now. All of them are rescues. Someone left on in my yard, another was rescued from a farm, I got one at my local shelter, I got one from a girl giving kittens away at wal-mart, and my last one was dropped off at a horse stable near my home. All of my balck cats are incredible creatures, I love them very much. They're the best cats.

We adopted a homeless cat two years ago and although he was extremely frightened and traumatised for months, he is now the most loving, gentle, good-natured cat you could wish for. We love him with all our hearts and when he went missing for two weeks and 4 days about a year ago, we were distraught, but when he suddenly appeared at his catflap one night at midnight, very thin and bedraggled we realised he had been trapped somewhere. Ever since that day he has spent each and every night on our bed and even gets up from the sofa to join us at "bedtime". What more can you want from a lovely black cat?

I live in Galveston county, Texas and rescue cats, I have over thirteen little black ones running around my house as the shelters are full of black cats. Regardless of color I know my cats love unconditionally. I'd like to find them a forever home, but people tend to shy away from the black ones. Sad!

I love black cats-they have a lot of character. My family had one. She was very intelligent and a great mouser. They accessorize the house already when Halloween comes also. I wish people would appreciate them more, I am still surprised people stigmatize them with being bad luck or evil.

It doesnt matter to me, but I prefer black cats. I have three and they all chose me. My first was a black long haired I found on a doorstep when I was delivering phone books. The lady told me to take it so I did. I brought it home to my mother who had recently lost a cat and whom I was temporarily living with. She all her life had been wary of black cats because of the lore attached to their fur color :(. Knowing this, I took him home and soon she told me he could not leave when I moved, she was too attached and loves him to death now. Mission accomplished, one more black cat hater turned lover in the world. The other two I have are his babies, he knocked up the black cat that lived next door to my mom right before we got him fixed. Which I'm happy about because now I have two gorgeous kittens who do everything together and bring me loads of fun throughout my day.

All of our cats have been strays. We live at the end of a road with forest nearby. I guess they think the kittens will survive. Maybe they just don't think! There are wild animals out there that would make short work of a kitten. Right now we have a black cat who adopted us. My hubby was working in the yard and this little black kitten came wobbling up to him meowing his head off. Will took one look at him and fell in love. At age 16 he keeps his sleek coat perfect and is still very handsome. His photo can be seen if you Click Here

I don't understand people who would adopt an animal on the basis that they prefer its markings. Black greyhounds are equally as hard to find homes for, its such a shame that these animals are overlooked.

No. I've had several black cats. They were my mom's favorite, too. We had one named Moses, after the kitten in the book by James Herriot. I have a picture of him with my son Jason on Tagfoot. You can see how much they loved each other. We can only have outdoor cats where we are now, and since our neighbors have three cats, we don't dare get any, since we don't want more cats fights than we already have. We do have a number of cats people drop off on the highway that decide to stay here, but they are mostly feral .

- I have always had black cats.. since i was a little girl.I have had a lot of exotic pets but always one black cat. not sure but i think my mom wanted me to have a companion. My Bear is now 18 he is the last of my black cats. When i was about 5 my Mom brought me a black cat which is now my Bears great grandfather. Bears father had gotten hit by a car that i believe aimed for him. How would i know this is because i had a fenced in yard. I can not believe people still think of black cats being some evil thing. All animals can be lo ving and your best friend if you treat them well.I have four cats now. two calico and a maine coon plus my baby Bear. I sometimes wish that I hadnt had him fixed because I would have liked to see him have one litter but it was for his health and if I was in a stable place to live at the time I definitly would have. He is my best friend. I know that he is getting on but I cant imagine going on without him. 18 yrs is a long time and I thank God I have had all this time with him.

- I have five cats, two white and tabby, one ginger, one black and ginger and a black cat, named Sooty. He the most loving and affectionate of all our cats. He can be a little naughty and he now has got a cold because he refuses to stay indoors, but he never goes very far like my other cats. Black cats are considered very lucky in the UK. Our black cat is a cross bombay. Excellent lens by the way.

- We've had quite a few of black cats in our family ... feral and as domestic pets. Lately, I've been feeding a black male cat that comes to my back door twice a day. I've asked about him, and the neighbors claim he belongs to another neighbor who I've not yet met. When I see a male cat that hasn't been fixed, and is roaming the neighborhood, I am a little concerned. Oh, sorry for going off on that tangent. Black cats are some of the most loving cats out there.

- My rescue adoptions included 3 black persian cats over the years... all very different personalities! One super calm and laid back: Andy Pandy, my mother's cat. Second cat Lizzie (for Elizabeth Taylor) basically just communicated with "Hiss, spit, growl" for the first two years of her life, and the Third is a feral Hooligan, Ziggi (for Zig Zigglar) who is all hugs'n'snugs and a very brave little boy protecting me and making sure all us girls are OK - a sweetheart in every way.
I head of one shelter who helped to overcome the hesitation of people adopting black cats, by calling each one "Jelly Bean" as that is a super friendly name with no negative associations.

Too bad it ran away or taken by other people. However i was in luck for later i had another cat which full brown which i named after my black cat, it was a mouse killer.

- So glad I found this lens, black cats are lovely and beautiful. Sometimes for fire dept gets "adopted" by kittens and we have managed to get them all adopted through the years, including one I adore that is my baby now but we have two beautiful black cats with gorgeous eyes who just want to give some loving and no one wants to adopt them! We feed them, built them a home behind the firehouse and play with them but we keep hoping we will find someone to adopt them too.

- The problem is that people give cats away instead of putting a price on them. I breed kittens that are loved well reared and sold. They are precious to me and then to their new owners. What you get for nothing is worth what you pay for it. People not interested in breeding kittens that other people want must have them neutered, This is a sad story but it is so great that there are people like you to look after these rejected loves.

- This is such a sad, but touching story.... Black cats are just as precious as all of the other coloured cats... and luck is what you make of it. Most superstitions, I swear, were made from a mother... not putting shoes onto a table, don't walk under a ladder etc.
All animals deserve to be loved!

My last kitty was a tux - black with white nose, bib, mittens. He left me at about 18 from the usual old-age problems. I'm not sure when I'll get the next one - my life is just a bit too changeable right now - but when I do I'm looking for an all-black cat.

- When I was looking to adopt an older cat eleven years ago, the humane society said they only had a black one and that they didn't put their black cats up for adoption. The superstition was so far out of my mind that I said something like, "Why?! I don't care what colour she is!" Well, I brought home my beautiful Tabitha about an hour later, with grateful staff waiving the bulk of the adoption fee, thrilled to have found a good home for her. She and I have been best pals ever since. I think black cats are regal. Great lens about beautiful animals.

- I've had three black cats share their lives over the decades, all of them very distinct personalities. My current one Zig Ziggler, is such a shmoozer and so happy, I totally adore him!
I read somewhere that a shelter usually named their black cats waiting for adoption "JellyBean" because they are like the licorice flavoured black beans (my favourite) and people then seem more inclined to adopt them, rather than giving them names that are spooky etc.

- My black cat has a tail that is about two inches smaller than my other cats. It ends in such a definitive point, it's like it was put into a pencil sharpener and worn down.

- We have fostered a black kitten and she was adorable and super intelligent. Our neighbor often fosters kittens from wild mothers, and many of them are black too. It is hard to find homes for them, sadly.

- Black cats are just cats that are black. They are every bit as loving as any other color feline. Pick one up and hear her purr. I can't understand all the superstition. Great lens.

- I admire your compassion and how you act on it in a way that makes such a difference. Thank you for this lens. I did not realize that many people reject black cats. That is a sad state of affairs. Many blessings to you as you continue to pour out that unconditional love. Wonderful lens!

- Hurray for all types of kitties! When I picked out my two cats, their markings weren't something I took into consideration when choosing them. Thanks for making a case for considering cats who have a harder time getting adopted!

- Any and every cat is beloved! What difference does their colour make? Their personalities and character are varied and wonderful, irrespective of colour. I have two - Poodle (Didius Cattius, I have a lens on him) and Madagascar. Well done on a thoughtful topic.

- I once tried to adopt a black cat from a woman who had a private shelter. It happened to be before Halloween and she wouldn't let them out them (orange ones either) I eventually got a black and orange and kept them in the house the last two weeks of October.

- What a lovely lens! We adopted two black cats and I help manage feral colonies full of black cats. I've worked with several black kittens to socialize them so they can be adopted out. Even though they are sweet and beautiful, some people avoid adopting black cats, which is a shame. Merry Christmas, from one crazy cat person to another.

- Not adopting a cat just because it is black is ignorant. When we adopted our 2 last year I did notice how many at the shelter were all black. In my opinion there is no excuse for not adopting them if you're looking for a pet. Kudos to you for doing your part for the ones you found although it was a hardship.

- I would love a black cat. 3 months ago we adopted two cats but I couldn't find any black ones. We ended up with a black and white girl, and a very dark grey boy who is getting darker grey stripes as he gets older. I think black cats are gorgeous.

- This is SO TRUE. I used to volunteer at a no kill cat rescue shelter and we always had so many black cats - easily half of our cats at any given time would be black. I never understood it - but then I personally have been owned by as many as 10 black cats at once. I love black cats. Thanks for this lens - lensrolling it to my cat lenses.

- My brother and sister and I came home from school one day, and saw the cutest tiny black kitten curled up on my dad's chest - they were both napping. We named the cat Binx - after the cat in Hocus Pocus. He was the best cat ever, and let us dress him up and even let me drape him over my shoulder. He moved with us several times, but sadly he got hurt and even after surgery passed over the rainbow bridge...

- What a great lens. I was unaware that black cats were hard to adopt out until I talked with a worker at one of the top 10 shelters in the country. People have some strange ideas. I'm all about temperament so color has little bearing.
Will feature on my Ask The Budda lens which addresses adopting black cats.

- You're right, black kitties need love and are far less likely to adopted from shelters than other cats. Unfortunately, that often means a sad ending. We need no kill legislation everywhere!
