From the lens Black Cats Need Adoptive Homes.

Tell me what you REALLY think about black cats!

I'd always wanted a black cat. When I went to the shelter and said I wanted a black adult cat, the volunteers almost fell over, they were so happy. I think black cats are the most elegant and beautiful. And adults are good because you can see their personalities.

Cats are gorgeous creatures. Mine are mainly black....I love them, they all have their own personality and it's a pleasure to observe them acting their natural way.....each one is so unique, like humans.....just love them!!!!

Thank you for pointing out about the importance of adopting black cats. Though I have over the course of my life had many colors of cat children, it has always made me sad, the bad rap that black ones get. You will seldom find a friendlier more openly loving companion than a black cat. It is very depressing the abuse and neglect they suffer due to ignorance. I am proud to say that I had a wonderful fur son in Zach for fourteen years before he past, and his faithful companion Boo for twelve years, before cancer and lonlieness (missing Zach, took him.) Both boys were black, boh were abandoned when we found them and both were complete love bugs. I wish people would look past the stereotype and see the being.
    Bright Blessings,
    ~M.

How sweet of you to put this page up! I have been owned by two blacks cats. Both were strays I took in, at different times. Sammy had been abandoned at the apartment building building by a cab driver who moved away. And then, later, Sheba, a wonderful Bombay who played fetch! And she talked! She was smarter than most people I know. The Bombays are amazing, they are great for shut-ins, as they become very attached to one owner, and fall in love with you. They are so intelligent. They really appreciate everything you do for them. Thank you for this page, really nice! (Montreal, Canada)

I choose cats based on their personalities, not their looks (we currently have five). None of our current cats are all black (one is all white), but I've had two in the past. Shmekel (who looked just like your Snookums) and Lila were wonderfully sweet cats. I wouldn't hesitate to get an all black cat again if the opportunity presents itself in the future.

Hi LindaJM! I just stopped by again to say hello. Did you know that your lens was one of the first SquidLikes I ever gave when coming into the Squid Sea for the first time, just 2 weeks and 4 lenses ago! ... Today I came back to PIN this lens to my Pinterest board, "Lifestyle" and give it a tweet from there.

In the meantime, when you have an available moment, if you could stop by and give me some feedback on my two (somewhat delicate topic) "cause" lenses, one on "breast cancer tattoos" and the other on "breast cancer pinkwashing" , I have arranged the earnings (which are currently 0.00, unfortunately) to be shared with Women's Future Benefit . Sending you a thank you in advance! EmmeSinger

I love them - I mentioned our adopted black cat "Morse" earlier. We also adopted a black kitten we called "Zenith" (after another detective story) - he had a 'Circus Cat' personality. Someone could have taught him tricks, he was a bundle of energy and love. Zip, zip, back to our lap for a pat "thanks smooooch", zip zip! At the moment we have another adopted black cat (who came as an abandoned kitten), "Zenith II" - she has a super-sweet personality, she's always licking our other cats, or playing 'throw & catch' with her toy mouse. I am really sorry that other people have prejudices about black cats; it's not fair.

I have always had black cats.. since i was a little girl.I have had a lot of exotic pets but always one black cat. not sure but i think my mom wanted me to have a companion. My Bear is now 18 he is the last of my black cats. When i was about 5 my Mom brought me a black cat which is now my Bears great grandfather. Bears father had gotten hit by a car that i believe aimed for him. How would i know this is because i had a fenced in yard. I can not believe people still think of black cats being some evil thing. All animals can be lo ving and your best friend if you treat them well.I have four cats now. two calico and a maine coon plus my baby Bear. I sometimes wish that I hadnt had him fixed because I would have liked to see him have one litter but it was for his health and if I was in a stable place to live at the time I definitly would have. He is my best friend. I know that he is getting on but I cant imagine going on without him. 18 yrs is a long time and I thank God I have had all this time with him.

I have five cats, two white and tabby, one ginger, one black and ginger and a black cat, named Sooty. He the most loving and affectionate of all our cats. He can be a little naughty and he now has got a cold because he refuses to stay indoors, but he never goes very far like my other cats. Black cats are considered very lucky in the UK. Our black cat is a cross bombay. Excellent lens by the way.

We've had quite a few of black cats in our family ... feral and as domestic pets. Lately, I've been feeding a black male cat that comes to my back door twice a day. I've asked about him, and the neighbors claim he belongs to another neighbor who I've not yet met. When I see a male cat that hasn't been fixed, and is roaming the neighborhood, I am a little concerned. Oh, sorry for going off on that tangent. Black cats are some of the most loving cats out there.

The successor Agents include a tortoiseshell, a tabby, a gray and white, and a black kitty with white tie and cummerbund - and they are all also rescued kitties. Turning away a cat based on coloring is ludicrous.
  • katemiya Jan 28, 2012 @ 3:40 pm | delete
I think it's sad that people would let superstitions prevent them from loving black cats.
  • Helene-Malmsio Jan 28, 2012 @ 12:43 pm | delete
My rescue adoptions included 3 black persian cats over the years... all very different personalities! One super calm and laid back: Andy Pandy, my mother's cat. Second cat Lizzie (for Elizabeth Taylor) basically just communicated with "Hiss, spit, growl" for the first two years of her life, and the Third is a feral Hooligan, Ziggi (for Zig Zigglar) who is all hugs'n'snugs and a very brave little boy protecting me and making sure all us girls are OK - a sweetheart in every way.
I head of one shelter who helped to overcome the hesitation of people adopting black cats, by calling each one "Jelly Bean" as that is a super friendly name with no negative associations.

Love this lens. Black cats get a bad rap. I love them. Right now we have only 1 who have a few stray while hairs that form a sort of smile on her lower belly. Thanks for talking about black cats. They are hard to adopt out I know having fostered, volunteered at shelters and having my own rescue (FIV Cat Rescue). Blessed. Bear hugs, Frankster

black cats are also precious to me. i love to see a cat which has black fur fully, especially a black persian cat. a black cat was my 1st pet when i was like four and a half years old back then. Too bad it ran away or taken by other people. However i was in luck for later i had another cat which full brown which i named after my black cat, it was a mouse killer.

So glad I found this lens, black cats are lovely and beautiful. Sometimes for fire dept gets "adopted" by kittens and we have managed to get them all adopted through the years, including one I adore that is my baby now but we have two beautiful black cats with gorgeous eyes who just want to give some loving and no one wants to adopt them! We feed them, built them a home behind the firehouse and play with them but we keep hoping we will find someone to adopt them too.

Totally cool blog. Thank you for reminding us about black cats. We are now carrying for a very aggressive/defensive black kitty named "kitty." She's an old lady and hard to get through to. But we won't stop trying love and eventually will win.
  • skiesgreen Nov 30, 2011 @ 4:47 am | delete
The problem is that people give cats away instead of putting a price on them. I breed kittens that are loved well reared and sold. They are precious to me and then to their new owners. What you get for nothing is worth what you pay for it. People not interested in breeding kittens that other people want must have them neutered, This is a sad story but it is so great that there are people like you to look after these rejected loves.
  • Jolene_Belmain Nov 24, 2011 @ 6:46 pm | delete
This is such a sad, but touching story.... Black cats are just as precious as all of the other coloured cats... and luck is what you make of it. Most superstitions, I swear, were made from a mother... not putting shoes onto a table, don't walk under a ladder etc.

All animals deserve to be loved!

    ~BLESSED~

I saw the title of your lens and immediately clicked on it and Liked it. This is a great service you're doing.

My last kitty was a tux - black with white nose, bib, mittens. He left me at about 18 from the usual old-age problems. I'm not sure when I'll get the next one - my life is just a bit too changeable right now - but when I do I'm looking for an all-black cat.

I think black cats are SO beautiful! Years ago we went as a family to pick a cat from a new litter, we picked the black one among the other colors. His only other color besides black is a slim white line down his tummy. We named him Oreo and absolutely LOVE him!
  • LindaJM Oct 7, 2011 @ 12:07 pm | delete
Oh my goodness... Oreo is such a great name for a black and white cat!

When I was looking to adopt an older cat eleven years ago, the humane society said they only had a black one and that they didn't put their black cats up for adoption. The superstition was so far out of my mind that I said something like, "Why?! I don't care what colour she is!" Well, I brought home my beautiful Tabitha about an hour later, with grateful staff waiving the bulk of the adoption fee, thrilled to have found a good home for her. She and I have been best pals ever since. I think black cats are regal. Great lens about beautiful animals.

We are unable to have cats as house pets, but we do care for ferals.
Black cats have not been my favorites, but I am getting to know one now, who is capturing my heart. I would help the cat that comes my way, whatever his colors.
I loved your lens. It was sensitive and the word needed to get out. I learned from it.

I've had three black cats share their lives over the decades, all of them very distinct personalities. My current one Zig Ziggler, is such a shmoozer and so happy, I totally adore him!
I read somewhere that a shelter usually named their black cats waiting for adoption "JellyBean" because they are like the licorice flavoured black beans (my favourite) and people then seem more inclined to adopt them, rather than giving them names that are spooky etc.
    Helene Malmsio
  • LindaJM Oct 7, 2011 @ 12:11 pm | delete
Good idea! Licorice is a good name for a black cat... but for short would you call him Lick or Lickie? My first black cat, adopted from a shelter, had the name Spook there. We loved her anyway. Took her home and re-named her Aretha.

What a lovely lens! We adopted two black cats and I help manage feral colonies full of black cats. I've worked with several black kittens to socialize them so they can be adopted out. Even though they are sweet and beautiful, some people avoid adopting black cats, which is a shame. Merry Christmas, from one crazy cat person to another.

Not adopting a cat just because it is black is ignorant. When we adopted our 2 last year I did notice how many at the shelter were all black. In my opinion there is no excuse for not adopting them if you're looking for a pet. Kudos to you for doing your part for the ones you found although it was a hardship.

I would love a black cat. 3 months ago we adopted two cats but I couldn't find any black ones. We ended up with a black and white girl, and a very dark grey boy who is getting darker grey stripes as he gets older. I think black cats are gorgeous.

This is SO TRUE. I used to volunteer at a no kill cat rescue shelter and we always had so many black cats - easily half of our cats at any given time would be black. I never understood it - but then I personally have been owned by as many as 10 black cats at once. I love black cats. Thanks for this lens - lensrolling it to my cat lenses.

My brother and sister and I came home from school one day, and saw the cutest tiny black kitten curled up on my dad's chest - they were both napping. We named the cat Binx - after the cat in Hocus Pocus. He was the best cat ever, and let us dress him up and even let me drape him over my shoulder. He moved with us several times, but sadly he got hurt and even after surgery passed over the rainbow bridge...

What a great lens. I was unaware that black cats were hard to adopt out until I talked with a worker at one of the top 10 shelters in the country. People have some strange ideas. I'm all about temperament so color has little bearing.

Will feature on my Ask The Budda lens which addresses adopting black cats.

I didn't know so many people had a problem with black cats. How silly it is, when it's the personality of an animal that we either bond with or not.

Yes, it should be the personality. But lots of people just want fluffy whites or tiger lilys or gray and white farm cats. I love my black cat!!!

Nice lens. My 20 year old black cat died in August :(

So sorry! After twenty years with a cat it must have been devastating..

I love black cats! I love all cats but I think there's something so tidy looking about a solid color cat.
  • LindaJM Sep 13, 2010 @ 4:18 pm | delete
Yes, they are adorable! My black cat fits into any decor. LOL

I can't believe I missed this already. I have two cats described as black but when you see them closely you realise they are actually chocolate brown. I love them to pieces no matter what colour they are and would have more if I had the room.

what a sweet lens and story...I also love black cats, any cat for that matter...it sickens me when people turn their backs on black cats or abuse them especially during Halloween...I will lensroll this to "my feral cat named Kitty" lens, and a ~"Squid Angel Blessing"~

    Blessed by a SquidAngel :)

You're right, black kitties need love and are far less likely to adopted from shelters than other cats. Unfortunately, that often means a sad ending. We need no kill legislation everywhere!

Came back to leave a well-deserved ~*~* Angel Blessing *~*~

Totally awesome lens! Great work spreading the news about beautiful black cats! I had one named Elvira one time and she and I were so close, I miss her so much!

I adored this wonderful lens about Black Cats when I first joined Squidoo, but although I can see that I rated it already I was so new at that time that I hadn't started leaving comments. This is beautiful but also sad, and I would not hesitate to give a black cat a good home having read about the difficulties these cats and kittens face.

I have had 5-6 black cats so far. I can´t understand why someone would abandoned a kitten just becouse it´s black. I mean they are just as loving and prrrrring than any other coloured cat. Very important lens 5*

This is an important topic. When i lost my Maui (not a black kitty) to cardiomyopathy last June, I started going to loss support at the local humane society. There they shared the plight of black cats waiting for adoption (A lot of issues come up in group.) They had a special adoption day dedicated to black cats.

When we went to adopt Ghost, we were really looking for a black cat. There were a lot of them at the shelter and they were eager for attention. My husband was busy holding some of them while I wandered around. We needed another non-dominant cat who wouldn't boss Wiley around. I read the card on Ghost, a blue/white cat who was sleeping in the cage. It said she was non-dominant and had been there a year! When my husband put his hand in the cage, she started licking it, and kept licking him all the while he held her. So we had to take her. It is kind of funny because he always wears black and is always covered in white cat fur.

I loved this story and am lensrolling it to White Cats Can't Jump.

You can't go past a black cat.

I had a wonderful black cat - Bagheera - when I was a little girl. She was extremely smart and a great hunter - even though I didn't want her to be.

I love all kinds of cats, and I would be at a lose to choose one over another. I agree though black cats are beautiful, and wonderful companions for good witches like me. :)
