Welcome to our lens pawed by Maxxamillion to support the ASPCA. Before you go out and buy that puppy check your shelters in your local area. Over 7 million cats and dogs are killed in the U.S. each year. Most of those are in public and private non-profit shelters. The rest die from poisoning, accidents, exposure, disease, and starvation. Please help my brothers and sisters live. We deserve a chance to live too. Please take a moment to see if you could help in any way the Animal Shelters in your local area. 100% of Proceeds From This Lens Goes To The - ASPCAPhotobucket

History Of The ASPCA

A

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is a non-profit organization which, as the name says, is dedicated to preventing cruelty towards animals. It was founded by Henry Bergh on April 10, 1866, in New York City. It is the oldest welfare organization in the United States. Their mission is "to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States."

The ASPCA works primarily with companion animal issues, such as pet care, equine or horse cruelty issues, and animal cruelty and neglect. Their programs and services include: a national poison control hotline for pet owners and animal health professionals; a shelter outreach program to promote best practices within locally-owned shelters, a corporate partner program to promote animal-friendly products and services, and a special anti-cruelty initiative to teach animal welfare education and animal welfare law enforcement practices (known as "humane law enforcement" within the organization) across the United States. In the state of New York, the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement division has powers to investigate cruelty and enforce laws. The Humane Law Enforcement division has been featured on the television program Animal Precinct.

Additionally, the ASPCA provides relief services for the domestic animal victims of natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, where the National Outreach department collected donations to provide supplies; coordinated volunteer efforts; deployed rescue teams to recover abandoned pets; provided temporary shelter to displaced animals; and reunited pets with their owners.

The ASPCA is very active in lobbying for animal welfare legislation, with regional and federal lobbyists covering all 50 states. The ASPCA communicates with federal and state legislators to consider animal-friendly legislation and bills. The ASPCA also drafts animal welfare legislation initiatives and proposals for legislators to consider during their sessions. The ASPCA's "Advocacy Brigade" allows users to write/e-mail their legislators on important animal legislation bills and referendums.

Many local organizations use the term Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), but they are not related to the ASPCA, which is based in New York and has a national reach. Some local organizations take in animals that are stray, abused, or owner give ups, while others may provide humane law enforcement services. They may be private, or contracted with their local government.

The ASPCA celebrated its 142nd anniversary on April 10, 2008. The current president of the organization is Ed Sayres. The current vice president is Gail Buchwald.

Fight Animal Cruelty

10 Ways You Can Help Fight Puppy Mills

1. Do Not Buy Your Puppy From a Pet Store
That puppy who charmed you through the pet shop window has most likely come from a large-scale, substandard commercial breeding facility, commonly known as a puppy mill. In these facilities, parent dogs are caged and bred as often as possible, and give birth to puppies who could have costly medical problems you might not become aware of until after you bring your new pet home.

2. Make Adoption Your First Option
If you're looking to make a puppy part of your family, check your local shelters first. Not only will you be saving a life, but you will ensure that your money is not going to support a puppy mill. There are many dogs waiting for homes in shelters all across the country and an estimated one in four is a purebred! Your second option is breed rescue. If your heart is set on a specific breed you haven't been able to find in a shelter, you can do an Internet search for a breed-specific rescue organization.

3. Know How to Recognize a Responsible Breeder
If you've exhausted your options for adopting and are choosing to buy from a breeder, remember that responsible breeders have their dogs' interests in mind. They are not simply interested in making a sale, but in placing their pups in good homes. A responsible breeder should screen you as thoroughly as you screen them! Read the ASPCA's responsible breeding statement to find out more about how a responsible breeder behaves.

4. See Where Your Puppy Was Born and Bred
One sign that you are speaking to an unscrupulous breeder is that they will not let you see the facility in which your puppy was born. Always ask to see the breeding premises and to meet both parents (or at least the mother) of the puppy you want to take home. You should also ask for an adoption contract that explains%u2015in terms you understand%u2015the breeder's responsibilities, health guarantee and return policy.

5. Internet Buyers, Beware!
Buying a puppy from the Internet is as risky as buying from a pet store. If you buy a puppy based on a picture and a phone call, you have no way of seeing the puppy's breeding premises or meeting his parents. And those who sell animals on the Internet are not held to the Animal Welfare Act regulations%u2015and so are not inspected by the USDA.

6. Share Your Puppy Mill Story with the ASPCA
If you have-or think you have-purchased a puppy-mill puppy, please tell us your story. Every bit of evidence gives us more power to get legislation passed that will ban puppy mills.

7. Speak Out!
Inform your state and federal legislators that you are disturbed by the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills, and would like to see legislation passed that ensures that all animals bred to be pets are raised in healthy conditions. You can keep up-to-date about current legislation to ban puppy mills by joining the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade.

8. Tell Your Friends
If someone you know is planning on buying a puppy, please direct them to our puppy mill information at ASPCA.org. Let them know that there are perfectly healthy dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted.

9. Think Globally
Have a webpage, a MySpace page or a blog? Use these powerful tools to inform people about puppy mill cruelty by adding a link to our puppy mill information at ASPCA.org.

10. Act Locally!
When people are looking to buy or adopt a pet, they will often ask the advice of their veterinarian, groomer or pet supply store. Download and print our flyers and ask to leave them in the offices of your local practitioners. by SPCA

ASPCA® Announces Drop in Animal Intake,

Euthanasia Numbers At Animal Shelters in Spokane

The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) announced that, as part of its ASPCA® Mission: Orange%u2122 program, the number of animals entering shelters in Spokane has decreased by seven percent, and euthanasia rates have decreased by four percent in 2007, compared to the same period in 2006. In addition, the number of pets being transferred out of the city's animal control facility for adoption at outside agencies and rescue groups has increased.

ASPCA Mission: Orange is a nationwide initiative taking place in partnership with select "target" communities, including Spokane, that addresses the animals most at-risk (i.e. shelter animals) by including and collaborating with leading community organizations to strive toward a save rate of 75 percent for unwanted and abandoned animals entering shelters.

"We're extremely proud of Spokane's support of ASPCA Mission: Orange," says ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. "The community's devotion toward building a strong foundation will ensure that the city's at-risk pets received the second chance they so genuinely deserve. Spokane's collaboration is a model not only for other communities, but for the entire nation."

The collaboration among the three ASPCA Mission: Orange partner agencies-SpokAnimal C.A.R.E., Spokane Humane Society and Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services (SCRAPS)-provides the city's homeless pets with support through cooperative off-site adoption and spay/neuter events.

Through ASPCA Mission: Orange, the ASPCA has made a three-year commitment to Spokane, as well as to each of its four other "target" communities (Austin, Tex., Gulfport/Biloxi, Miss., Philadelphia, Penn., and Tampa, Fla.) and is investing up to $200,000 per year in each community toward capacity-building and animal welfare efforts. ASPCA Mission: Orange aims to create a country of humane communities, one community at a time, where animals receive the compassion and respect due to them as sentient beings, and where there is no more unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable animals simply because of a lack of resources or awareness.

For more information about ASPCA Mission: Orange, please visit www.aspca.org.

Mission Orange TM

A little more than one year after it launched ASPCA® Mission: OrangeTM, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) has selected three communities as finalists for joining this unique and intense program designed to create a "country of humane communities, one community at a time," by curbing the needless euthanasia of healthy and adoptable pets. As a natural extension of ASPCA Mission: Orange, this competition phase is an effective way to disseminate the principles of the campaign in more communities across the country.

The three communities, including the lead partner agencies in each community, are: Buncombe County, N.C. (Asheville Humane Society and Humane Alliance of Western North Carolina); Cleveland, Ohio (Cleveland Animal Protective League and City of Cleveland Kennel); and Oklahoma City, Okla. (Central Oklahoma Humane Society and Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division)....continue

Before You Even Think Of Getting A Dog!

Before You Even Think Of Getting A Dog you should ask yourself the following Question? if any of them apply to you you should not get a dog at this time. These are some of just a few excuses dogs end up in shelters. It is heartbreaking to see the sadness in the eyes of a dog that was someone's loving pet of nine years and probably thinking what did I do wrong to my human family for them to send me to be killed.

  • Am I ready for at least a 12-to-15 year commitment to my dog?

  • Can I afford to have a dog?

  • Can I afford the vaccinations and vet care?

  • If I move, will I have to give my dog up?

  • If I get a promotion and have to move away, could I take my dog with me?

  • Do I have room for a dog in my home?

  • Am I going to walk my dog daily?

  • Am I going to groom and bathe my dog regularly?

  • Am I getting a dog just to impress someone?

  • I'm getting married soon, could my spouse live with me and my dog?

  • Am I or my family allergic to dogs?

  • We are having a new baby soon, will we have to get rid of Fido?

  • If I don't have time for my dog, will I have to tie him up in the backyard or basement?

  • I have to clean up after my dog.

  • I hate getting dog hair in my home!

But if you are ready please check out your local city pound and shelters.

It's A Doggie!

The dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is a domesticated subspecies of the wolf, a mammal of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term encompasses both feral and pet varieties and is also sometimes used to describe wild canids of other subspecies or species. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history, as well as being a food source in some cultures. There are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.

The dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds. Height measured to the withers ranges from a few inches in the Chihuahua to a few feet in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called blue) to black, and browns from light (tan) to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a wide variation of patterns; and, coats can be very short to many centimeters long, from coarse hair to something akin to wool, straight or curly, or smooth. The Complete dog book : the photograph, history, and official standard of every breed admitted to AKC registration, and the selection, training, breeding, care, and feeding of pure-bred dogs. On This Corner Felis Catus!

It's The Kitty!

The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from other felines, is a small carnivorous species of crepuscular mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and its ability to hunt vermin, snakes and scorpions. It has been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years.

A skilled predator, the cat is known to hunt over 1,000 species for food. It can be trained to obey simple commands. Individual cats have also been known to learn on their own to manipulate simple mechanisms, such as doorknobs. Cats use a variety of vocalizations and types of body language for communication, including meowing, purring, hissing, growling, squeaking, chirping, clicking, and grunting. With 69 million of them present in American homes,[http://www.animalsheltering.org/resource_library/magazine_articles/jan_feb_2003/cat_is_top_dog.html AVMA Survey Confirms Cat's Status as Top Dog] cats are the most or the second most popular pets in that country. Cats also may be the most popular pet in the world, with over 600 million in homes all over the world.http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=35944126 They are also bred and shown as registered pedigree pets. This hobby is known as the "Cat Fancy".

Until recently the cat was commonly believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt, where it was a cult animal. However a 2007 study found that all house cats are probably descended from a group of as few as five self-domesticating African Wildcats Felis silvestris lybica circa 8000 BC, in the Near East.

Great lens. In the UK we 'rescue' rather than 'adopt' animals. I've rescued 2 German Shepherds in the past. Rescued dogs are so loving. 5* :)
