I have toyed with the idea of adoption for many years. I am getting a little long in the tooth to do it now, but I still think about it.
  • ionutpopa May 10, 2012 @ 9:47 am | delete
I think adopting a child is a noble thing, but despite that it's a very long and stressful process. Why? Beats me!
  • belize-realestate May 7, 2012 @ 1:11 am | delete
Several of my best friends are adopted and I have been fortunate enough to meet their adoptive parents. Both are from such warm, loving households that they wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

When we were having trouble conceiving we put our names on the adoption list and was told the wait was a minimum of 5 years. Not sure why it was that long considering the number of children available for adoption (especially in the countries we were considering), but we ended up being successful at IVF and due to finances have decided not to pursue adoption.

I have no doubt that it would have been a very rewarding experience and often find myself considering the 'what ifs'.

My name is Ola Zuri and as an author, mentor and adoptee I started a program to assist families everywhere. The overall purpose of the Believe In Me program is to provide positive literature to encourage and empower all children to believe in who is inside of themselves. Believe In Me will give parents the support they need to raise confidence levels in their children; will provide resources for the educators, support workers, and others in the community while helping children develop as individuals; and will ensure children, in every part of every country, are building a positive self esteem from within. We adopted two children, a natural brother and sister, in 1984, when he was seven and she was 11. We fostered them for two years first. It was a rough road, that ended on May 15, 2009. Read our story on http://www.squidoo.com/Suicide_child -- a work partially finished as I write this. Adoption can be a great joy, but you'd also better prepare for some possible heartbreak, especially if your child experienced great hurt before coming to you. I am working to complete this lens as quickly as I can.
