What's it Like to Adopt an Older Child from Another Country?
Midnight Train to Moscow
Our experiences adopting from Russia.
We called the agency. But something in my gut said not to go with this agency. Instead we decided to do some research and praying. A few months later, we were invited to hear about a new agency that was going to be getting started in our area. We met with a group of about 30 prospective parents at a well respected church in Atlanta. And, well that's another story.....If you'd like to know about how God spoke to me and protected us from this crook, sign my guest book. If there is enough interest, I'll post it.
After healing from the grief of our experience with a crook, we found a reputable agency in California, called Nightlight Christian Services.
We were sent a video of a precious blonde haired blue eyed seven year old girl reciting a poem.
Within 9 months, we were on the plane to Russia. We spent 10 days there and completed the adoption.
We began to see some attachment issues with our daughter within days. We were so thankful to get home and began to practice "holding time" as we learned in a book that I'd read about online. You can order that book online. Within a few months, we began to attach. She learned the language within a few months and it wasn't long before we were praying for God to provide the means for us to adopt again.
Within 18 months of our first adoption, we brought home another Russian princess who was 8 years old.
The girls are 16 and 17 years old now. They are truly a blessing to us and all who know them.
If you are thinking about adopting an older child, I strongly encourage you to do so, but be sure to read everything you can about attachment, build a support network of parents who have adopted older children, and be prepared to experience the pain and joy of adopting an older child.

- Thanks. I am a member now. I want to stress to those looking at adoption to learn about attachment. This is the most important area you must prepare for in order to live with the choice you've made to adopt and the consequences of a disrupted attachment in the early years. See the books below that I recommend.
