In my lens I am going to share some of my own examples of Adsense monetized websites as well as Adsense tools that I currently use (or will use shortly) after a bit of planning. These are my own current case studies and baselines that I want to explore and improve upon. Currently I am experiencing a baseline earning amount that can afford me about 1 cup of Starbucks a day. Not a lot - and this leaves room for improvement. So that is what I am doing -- I am going to work on improving this situation and learning from the Masters.
If you are seeking some extra income - Adsense might be one of your tickets. You may want to learn right alongside me.
As we will learn, there are many ways to go about making your websites 'Adsense friendly' or building website content in order to maximize Adsense earnings. One thing is for sure, Google has made a relatively friendly contextual advertising / PPC program that can help even the novice web developer and enthusiast monetize their web content. If you can cut and paste HTML code, you can use Adsense.

When I tried to get my account re-instated back in 2004, I was unsuccessful and never received an answer. I needed to understand what they had meant by "invalid clicks" on my account (the account could have been sabatoged and I have never learned what the invalid clicks were). I ventured to make a new account, start over and see if I could make-do with it. Google caught me!
It goes to show that an account can be very fragile even if you play by the book. I felt I always played by the book.
Since my new account, I racked up a grand total of roughly $35.00. The clicks have gotten significantly cheaper and something has changed since 2004.
I am currently focused on affiliate marketing through CJ and Kontera and AdBrite (a couple of alternatives). CJ is more lucrative for me -- so I am focusing on that now. I have a new niche market that last month yielded $122.00 (and I feel I am just getting started).
C'est la vie. A plan B and multi-threaded income streams are the best way to go. Never keep all your eggs in one basket.
Lesson learned .... again.

Bucks4Banners.com will pay you for displaying banners on 3 webpages of your blog or website. Their payrate is $5.00 every single month for displaying the banners assigned to you. That money can add up when you submit other blogs or websites for approval. There is no limit to the websites you can submit. There are some content restrictions though (sites about making money, gambling, porn, etc).When I signed up for Bucks4Banners.com, I received an email confirmation within 24 hours on a weekend telling me my domain was accepted and I was registered. Once registered, you can suggest new sets of 3 pages to place banners on (even on the same domain). If you have a huge website or a blog containing hundreds of content pages well positioned in the search engines, you might make a nice little chunk of change.
Another good thing to note is that upon an approved sign-up, you will receive $10.00 credited to your account. You can receive payments in the form of Amazon vouchers or Paypal payments. If you want the cash, you select the cash option on your details section.
Here is an overview of how it works:
* Enter your contact information
* Indicate which 3 pages you wish to display the adverts on.
* Within 72 hours they will provide you with your advertising banner and code if approved.
* Place these on to your site.

Since I signed up on the weekend, I am waiting for my initial credits. I also have about 10 other sites waiting in the wings for approval. That's $50.00 extra bucks a month. It all helps, right.
They even provide server-side PHP or PERL scripts so that they will update the ads from their webserver and you do not have to change anything manually. I have written them asking for a little bit of implementation assistance. Clearly this is a better option.
I also suggested to them that it would be cool to add a member forum for tips and tricks and sharing.

America's Idol - Doing Adsense with Fox and the Idols
Americas Idol WebsiteOne of the main things that I have learned after developing dozens of websites over the last 10 years is that developing a website that stems from a hobby or something that I am passionate about ensures content stays nice and fresh.
On my website called "America's Idol", I explore some of the pro-Idol and con-Idol views that seem to be so very prevalent during season 6. With the "Vote for the Worst" website and Howard Stern causing a lot of "water cooler talk", I am hoping that I can monetize this traffic in multiple ways. If you take a look you will find:
- Google Adsense ads and search box
- An Amazon aStore integrated into the look & feel of the website
- Live eBay feeds monetized through Commission Junction
- Targeted digital products from ClickBank
I keep the content on this website fresh with featured newsflashes and live newsfeeds. I also add to sections as I feel. Adding to the site is easy for me because I really have a love-hate of American Idol.

UnionCeremony.org - Hitting a Niche GLTB Audience
Union Ceremony WebsiteI have created a special niche website on Gay Marriage and the issue of same-sex unions. This issue features live headlines that update constantly as well as Adsense and information on laws on the issue as they range from state-to-state.
On my website called Unionceremony.org proposes to monetize traffic in multiple ways. Due to the potential topic and audience of the site - I have integrated an "You are over 18" button into the website in order to allow people to move into the Amazon Ashop. If you take a look on this particular website you will find:
- Google Adsense ads and search box
- An Amazon aStore integrated into the look & feel of the website (warning - contents not fit for under 18).
- Live eBay feeds monetized through Commission Junction
- Targeted digital products from ClickBank
This is another topic that is easy to keep fresh. This site (like the America's Idol) was launched about 1 week ago.

That create sites similar to this one very rapidly.
While these websites might appear relatively uninspiring this is one potential way to make Adsense revenue. For those people who value quantity over quality, these types of solutions exist.
I am hoping that I can monetize this traffic from this site through Google Adsense.

But that doesn't mean there aren't any number of mistakes that you can make when trying to increase your AdSense income - and any one of those mistakes can keep you earning candy money instead of earning the sort of cash that can pay for your home.
There is one mistake though that will totally destroy your chances of earning a decent AdSense income before you've even started.
That mistake is making your ad look like an ad.
No one wants to click on an ad. Your users don't come to your site looking for advertisements. They come looking for content and their first instinct is to ignore everything else. And they've grown better and better at doing just that. Today's Internet users know exactly what a banner ad looks like. They know what it means, where to expect it - and they know exactly how to ignore it. But when you first open an AdSense account, the format and layout of the ads you receive will have been designed to look just like ads. That's the default setting for AdSense - and that's the setting that you have to work hard to change.
That's where AdSense gets interesting. There are dozens of different strategies that smart AdSense account holders can use to stop their ads looking like ads - and make them look attractive to users. They include choosing the right formats for your ad, placing them in the most effective spots on the page, putting together the best combination of ad units, enhancing your site with the best keywords, selecting the most ideal colors for the font and the background, and a whole lot more besides.
