Bad Teeth Can Lead To Heart Problems

taken from timesofindia.indiatimes.com

NEW DELHI: There is increasing medical evidence that poor dental health could cause major problems, including heart diseases, says Britain's chief dental official, who is of Indian origin.

"Evidence year by year is increasingly pointing to the link between infection in the mouth and general health," Raman Bedi, Chief Dental Officer of England, said in an interview here, affirming a certain link between dental health general physical health.

"There is increasing evidence that infection in the mouth can lead to coronary disease and other health issues," Bedi said. An Indian by origin, Bedi had migrated to England with his parents when he was four years old.

On a fortnight-long visit to participate in the Federation Dentaire International (FDI) and interact with the dental fraternity, Bedi and his team from the Department of Health are seeking to promote collaborations in the field of education, training and dental health services.

Bedi has the distinction of not only being the youngest ever chief dental officer for England but also the first from the Indian community.

Bedi is also the author of a book The Root Cause - Oral Health in Developing Countries based on his studies in India and other developing countries.

"Dental health is no longer about how we eat and how we look but a systemic problem. The relevance of mouth hygiene is gaining increasing importance. In India it is more important because incidence of oral cancer is the highest here. This is not only because of the Indian diet but because a large number of people chew tobacco."

Advising regular dental check-ups at six months' to 18 months' interval, Bedi said that this would help in the early detection of oral cancer.

A father of three school-going boys, Bedi's advice to parents is to reduce the amount of sugar in the diet of children and be regular with the use of fluoride-based toothpaste.

In the case of children, right from confectionery to fizzy drinks and table sugar all added to the problem, he said.

"If we can reduce the amount of sugar that we eat, it would be better for our oral health," he said.

Modern foods, according to him, contained sugar in hidden quantities, which could lead to oral cancer. It is true for zarda, gutka and chewing tobacco also.

Bedi's itinerary in India includes seminars in Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai to promote education opportunities in England under the Commonwealth's scholarship and fellowship plan and establish some partnerships.

The British team is already in talks with some of the leading dental institutions. It is keen to draw more institutions into the plan to help raise the level of dental health care in India.

Stating that Britain was already providing development funds, Bedi said, "What we want to do is ensure that dentistry participate in that. We have now identified a whole series of education opportunities that dental graduates from India can pursue in England."

The only criterion for post-graduate and other courses in England was a BDS degree and fluency in English, he said, adding "in case some of them want to stay on in India, we will help them also."

Already a large number of Indians pursue post-graduate studies in Britain and stay on to work there. Around a third of dentists in Britain are from the subcontinent, with Indians being the majority.

Having identified with Indian counterparts the need for better infection control and management of dental equipment, Bedi is also keen to promote collaboration in public health services.

"What we are talking now is about dental public health and where does it fit in with the general health care. I have been contacted by leading consultants here. It is an area that has not been developed in India," Bedi said.

"We would like to work together with India to develop this expertise."
