Riding Bikes

Riding bikes is a fabulous way to enjoy the 'great outdoors' while having fun - for a lot people. But, not everybody, right? Do you wish that just once you could ride a bike, too? It's not as simple as everyone thinks it is sometimes! For what ever reason, it can just be too difficult to balance on a two-wheeler, so you're left by the side of the road or bike path to watch. But, fortunately, there is an answer! Now, you can participate, too!

Family Bike Rides

family bike ridesSince the invention of the bicycle, it has been a pleasure for parents to teach a child how to ride a bike. From the time the little one first starts walking, mobility, and exploring the great outdoors, becomes a very huge deal! Nearly everyone enjoys riding bikes at one point in their life or another. The benefits of experiencing the outdoors with family and friends is immeasurable!

Bike Riding

for me...

Like most parents, I want to be a part of my kids' bike riding experiences, but because of my physical challenges (I have Tethered Cord Syndrome), riding a regular, two-wheeled bike just doesn't work for me. But, thanks to a little ingenuity and creativity with regards to people with mobility challenges, my freedom, and participation in my kids' activities, is no longer limited to how far I can go on my crutches or wheelchair. Now, my whole family can go on bike rides, and I have the opportunity to go along for the ride, too!

Bike Ride

My first ride with my family

adult tricycle

I'll never forget my first bike ride with my family. My kids were ABSOLUTELY THRILLED that I was able to ride bikes with them! The smiles on their little faces were just priceless! We ended up taking the basket off the back of the adult trike and replacing it with a baby seat, so I was able to take my littlest one along for the ride, too.
There just aren't any words to express how extraordinarily NORMAL I felt! I guess that probably sounds weird to the average person, but being able to do something that a "normal" walking person does, means the world to me! Being able to be WITH my kids during their adventures, instead of sitting on the sidelines just watching...It's truly, truly an amazing experience!

**Funny little side note: Nearly every time I go out on my trike, I get comments from different people in the neighborhood. EVERY one of them have been positive. Little kids want to race me or think I have a "really cool bike!", and other adults (who DON'T have any physical issues) want a tricycle just like mine. I just can't tell you enough how NICE it is to be the 'center of attention' in a POSITIVE way!**

Adult Trikes

More options to consider

Although my adult tricycle works exactly how I need it to for me, I'm very aware that it may not work the same for everyone. Here are a few other options and styles that you may want to consider. The most important thing is to do whatever works for YOU! I want SO much for YOU to know, experience, and enjoy, the freedom I've felt with my trike!

Trouble with moving your legs? NO PROBLEM! This adult trike has that covered, as it's equipped with a motor! Have the mobility of an electric wheelchair without LOOKING like you're in a wheelchair! This is also a great option for going up hills and inclines where it might be a little tough.

"All of life is a journey. Which paths we take, what we look back on, and what we look forward to is up to us. We determine our destination, what kind of road we will take to get there, and how happy we are when we get there."

Bike Pedals With Straps

One of the largest challenges I faced when considering buying an adult tricycle was the foot pedals. I just don't have enough strength in my legs to keep my feet on! So, the original pedals were replaced with bike pedals with straps - much like the ones shown below. Again, pick ones that will work for YOU! (Please also make sure they have the same size fittings as the original pedals.)

Bike Riding Safety Tips

Just a few reminders when riding your new adult trike!

  • Wear a helmet! You're not likely to flip an adult tricycle, yourself, but you can't depend on vehicles around you to always be on the look-out for you
  • Learn & know the specific bike riding laws in your area
  • Take a buddy along with you, if you need a little extra support for whatever reason. There's NO shame in taking extra precautions if you feel like you need to.
  • Take water bottles (and even a light snack, if you want) along on hot days. Riding a bike takes a lot of energy. You might appreciate the extra calorie boost!
  • Throw a portable tire repair kit in the basket "just in case". You never know when you'll pick up a splinter or hit a rock just right that might puncture your tire.
  • HAVE FUN!

Great idea for making bike riding easier and a lot more fun! I can't wait to get one of my own!

I think that could be a good alternative for a lot of people. Blessings from a SquidAngel who learned to ride a bike (not very well) at age 13 and hasn't figured out the driving thing.

I never learned to ride a bike well enough to really take it out on the highway. I got a bike for college graduation (something I asked for). If I had had enough practice, if I had a bike consistently across the years (it did get stolen) then perhaps eventually I would have gotten good enough at it to use -- I'm not sure, though. I am looking a wee bit wistfully at that trike. And I bet there are a bunch of other people who would.

Keeping yourself as mobile as possible is extremely important, but it may be a little tricky figuring out what exercises, etc you can do. I'd be happy to help you with that, too! (And the BEST part is, you don't even have to leave your house!) Come work out with me here!

Bike safety is important for everyone! Again, you may be the safest rider on the road, but you can't depend on what OTHERS are going to do. It's also a good example for your little ones.

Adult tricycles can be a bit pricey. It's important to take the best care possible to prolong it's use. If you don't have a shed or space in the garage for your adult tricycle, this is a great alternative!
